A large meeting was held in Dublin de nouncing the arrests of Daly, Daviu and Killen;Mr. Par d ell spoke. The Mor mons are said to have been in collusion with the Iodiarj8; Ouray urges the White River tribes to treat with the Government Two men were banged at Dallas, Texas, for murder. Pensaoola, Flori da, and Selma, Alabama, are to be united by railroad within six months. No session of the Kellogg Spofford Committee at New Orleans yesterday. The widow of Charles Dickens died yesterday. The crew of the schooner Francis .Burnlt, abandoned at sea, were brought to New Jork by the steamer Andes. J. D. Merritt shot and killed . M. Hicks at We Id on yesterday. The Erie Canal is still open. An engine and five cars were wrecked by ao open switch near Davenport, Iowa, yesterday. Abys sinia menaces Egypt and a British gunboat baa been sent to Massowah to protect Eng lishmen. Measures for the relief of tbe "distressed districts" in Ireland have beeu instituted by tbe Government. Bxtraordiuary precautions were taken by tbe British Government to repress any dis turbance that might occur at the meeting at Balls, Ireland, yesterday; Mr. Parnell spoke at the meeting and resolutions were adopted; great excitement is reported: throughout the district. A revolution. is threatened in Peru; the President is un popular; the Chilian invasion is regarded as certain. "New York markets: Money 74, closing at 5 per cent; cotton easy at 12i12 cts; Southern flour quiet and un changed; wheat opened slight ly in buyers' favor and closed at llc better, with a ood export demand; corn ilc lower, with a very moderate trade; spirits turpen tine firm and quiet at 44c cents; rosin un changed. - IThft provision market of New York became excited at the stock market fever, and prices went up. aaid that Eliza Pinkston after two years of wedded life got tired of no ruber two, and "counted him out." A very distinguished young actress, whose professional name is Bessie Darling, is to appear in Richmond, Va., next week, of which she is a na - tive. This time, report Bays, it is John Kelly who is to be removed by tbe Governor, and all because he failed to remove Deputy Comptroller Storrs for cause. Next. Jay Gould and other capitalists are said to have bought twenty mil lions of stock m the New York Cen tral. The question in financial cir cles is "Is Yanderbilt selling?" We regret to learn from the Rich mond State that the fine residence of Col. N. B. Meade, formerly editor of the Whiff, was burned in Culpep per county. It was partially insured. Tbe "Emigrant Aid Society" makes an earnest appeal to tbe people of the North for funds to aid in taking away cotton laborers from the South to help tbe Republicans carry In diana in tbe next Presidential elec tion. That is the English of it. To that complexion tbe so-called exodus has come. Mr. James C. Adkisson, a North Carolina printer, long resident at Nor folk, Va., died on Thursday. He was very highly respected. The Rich mond State says of him: "Living in Richmond when the war broke out, he at once volunteered in the Crenshaw Battery, and remained by his co lors throughout the entire four years, per forming every duty bravely and uncom plainingly.and always declining promotion, he left tbe army as be entered it, a private soldier. The war over, he made his home at Norfolk, where he became one of the early proprietors of the Virginian, of which Mr. Giennan is now tbe full editor and owner." When we wrote our comments upon the address of Mr. Matthews, on our third page, we had not seen any comments from Washington sources. The following from the Baltimore Sun's letter is interesting: "A notable incident in connection with the Thomas procession yesterday was the fact that not a single volunteer military or ganization from any point north of Mason and Dixon's line participated. All the military display outside of the regular army was furnished by organizations from the South. Another point upon which comment is made is tbe remarkable parti san tone Of portions of Mr. Stanley Mat thews's oration. In political circles it is Mid that Mr. Matthews was speaking more to the Obio Legislature than those who were present" We do not often see anything from the New York Tribune, concerning polities, that is worth trusting or copying. It publishes, however, an interview with some one that con tains tbe precise facts concerning the Grant movement in the South. It simply declares that there is nothing n it that the South is hopeful of 1 " i iiMgwMaaagsi i The Morning Star. VOL. XXV.NO, 54. success in 1880 that it will make a straight-out fight that the talk about the Democrats taking up Grant is all wind that the so-called "boom" is all manufactured as a newspaper sensation that such talk; W confined to a few scattered "old political duf fers," and ao on. Spirits turpentine was on . the decline yesterday. The Register of Deeds issued six marriage licenses during the past week, of which only one was for a white couple. We regret to learn that Mr. J. W. Taylor, of tbe firm of Colville & Co., was considerably hurt b.y a fall at the fire yesterday morning. A notice of importance to exec utors, administrators and guardians, from tbe Jndge of Probate of New Hanover county, is published in our advertising col umns. The express train from the south, on the Wilmington, Columbia & Augusta Railroad, due here yesterday morning, was delayed by a "run-off" on the Northeastern Railroad, and did not reach this city until 8 o'clock in the evening. The funeral of Mr. Henry Ehr beck, who, at the time of his death, was Recording Secretary of the Howard Relief Fire Engine Co. No. 1, takes place this morning at 10 o'clock, and will be attended not only by tbe above company, but also by Germania Lodge No. 4, Knights of Pythias, of which he was a member. One of our enterprising Water street merchants met one of our enterpising naval stores brokers at tbe fire yesterday morning, between midnight and day, when one of them offered 43 cents for 50 casks of spirits of turpentine, and the other said, "Here's your spirits!" when the trade was closed amid the glare of the conflagration and the hiss of the devouring flames. That's what you may call enterprise. Use Approaching Conference. The annual session of tbe North Carolina Conference of the M. E. Church, South, convenes at Wilson, N. C, on Wednesday, Dec. 3rd; hence to-day and next Sabbath Revs. E. A. Yates, of the Front street, and B. R Hall, of the Fifth street church.com -plete their labors for the present Confer ence year. They have served their re spective charges faithfully and well, and made hosts o friends in all the denomina tions, who would cheerfully welcome them back should the authorities of the church see tit to return them to labor in our midst for another Conference year. ai ' ' Ladles Benevolent Association. Tbroogb an inadvertance we omitted to mention in our last issue that the- meeting of the Ladies Benevolent Association was well attended considering the severity of the weather, about fifty being present. The proceedings were prefaced with prayer by Rev. B. R Hall. The address of Mr. Strange was gracefully delivered, and listeaed to with marked interest. Tbe Stab had no representative present and we regret that we cannot therefore give a more extended notice of this meeting. Lecture ou Fox and Mia Kr Captain Washington Catlett, Principal of the Cape Fear Academy, proposes giving a lecture on Fox, the- great English States man, and bis Times, in tbe school room of that institution, on Third street, on next Friday evening, November the 28th, at half-past 7 o'clock. The patrons of the school will be invited to attend, together with all interested in tbe cause of education. WILMINGTON, Further Particular of the Destruc tive Fire or Friday Night Losses, Insurance, dee. At the close of our report at about 8 o'clock yesterday morning we stated that the fire at Messrs. Colville & Co's mill was then thought to be under control, being confined to the piles of lumber near the burned buildings. Tbe fire in the lumber, which was hard to get at, continued to blaze fOth during the day.notwithstanding the engines kept steady streams upon 4t They kept it so under control, however, that there was but little apprehension of any further trouble from it. We give be low tbe estimated losses and amounts of in surance as we have derived them from dif ferent sources. Of course slight inaccura cies may be expected : Messrs. Colville & Co. lose their mill, about fifty thousand feet of lumber, about six hundred cords of wood, and a flat used for lightering lumber, altogether valued at about $20,000. They were insured for $2,000 on the mill and $4,000 on the lum ber, as follows: $1,000 on mill, in tbe Western, of Canada, and $1,000 on lum ber, in the Royal, represented by Mr. Nor wood Giles; $1,000 on mill, in the Pamlico, of Tarboro, and $1,000 on lumber, in the Union, Marine and Fire, of Galveston, represented by J. W. Gordon & Bro.; and $2,000 on lumber, in the Fire Association, of Philadelphia, represented by Messrs. Atkinson & Manning. Tbe flat, which was valued at about $600, was not insured. The loss upon the wharf property, upon which the Mill and Sash and Blind Fac tory located, belonging Lto Col. John McRae, is estimated at from $5,000 to $8,000, upon which there was no insurance. The Sash and Blind Factory, the prop erty of Messrs. Altaffer & Price, was veined at from $5,000 to $8,000, upon which there was only insurance to the amount of $1,000, in the Home, of New York, represented by Mr. Norwood Giles. These gentlemen had recently in troduced into their establishment three new and improved machines, one of them very fine. One of these machines had never been used, being under process of erection when the disaster occurred. Nearly ail of their stock, &e. , was at their warehouse on the east side of Nutt street, nearly opposite the mill, an c, together with their books, &c, was saved. They Will commence operations again- as soon as the necessary arrangements can be made. Messr. Alex. Sprnnt & Son lose the large ahcu on their wharf, containing 807 casks of spirits turpentine, 400 barrels of rosins, a quantity of empty barrels and other merchandise, together with the wharf property. The loss on wharf and shed is estimated at $3,000, upon which there was insurance in tbe Hartford, represented by Messrs. Atkinson & Manning, of $2,000. Tbe loss on spirits turpentine, rosin and other produce is put down si $8,500, which was covered by insurance in agencies represented by Messrs. Norwood Giles, De Rosset & Northrop, and J. W. Gordon & Bro. Messrs. Patterson & Hicks lost $500 in naval stores, which was covered by insur ance in the Liverpool and London and Globe, represented by J. W. Gordon & Bro. A derrick scow, for the Government, which had Just been finished by Messrs. Colville & Co., and turned over to the pro per authorities, was completely destroyed, so as not to be worth repairing-. The dam age to the hoisting engine and boiler is slight; The whole -loss will amount to about $1 ,100, the main consideration being the hindrance to the works below which its destruction will cause, as the vessel and ma chinery would have been ready for active operations in placing the granite on the New Inlet dam on to-morrow, tbe 24th inst. It will require at least four weeks to prepare a new scow and machinery for the work In the meantime the delivery of tbe granite will not be suspended. Temporary arrange ments will be made for unloading it at tbe dam, so that it can afterwards be put in place With the hoisting machinery. The large brick office of Messrs. Alex, Sprunt & Son made a very narrow escape. The cupola was scorched, and the facing to a window in a small room next to the fire. in which a lot of paper was stowed, ignited. It was the stern of the British barque Sussex which was scorehed by the flames before she could be towed from the vicinity of the fire not that of the Norwegian barque Zephyr. The officers and seamen of the vessels lying at the Champion Compress wharf rendered much assistance to the firemen in handling their hose, &c. As to our noble firemen, all we can say is, that they did their whole duty, from first to last, faithfully and zealously. The result of the fire was a heavy blow to Messrs. Colville & Co. and Altaffer & Price, who had so little insurance on their property, and much sympathy was ex pressed for them on all sides. Capital Case. H Allen Mathis, colored, charged with the murder of one Reuben Herring, colored, in Pender, and removed to this county for trial, will be heard on the first Wednesday of the approaching term of the Superior Court, which convenes in this city on the first Monday in December. , "aa-daesai A colored individual who at tempted to stop a runaway horse on Front street yesterday, which was frightened by the passage of the Bucket Company with their truck, at full speed, was hurled through one of the large panes of glass in the window of Mr. J. M. Robinson's hat slore. N. C, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1879. To-Day s Indications. For the South Atlantic and East Gulf States, lower pressure, southerly winds, increasing to westerly, and warmer, clear or partly cloudy weather. Aid tor the Orphan Asylum. In addition to the proposition which has been made through the press, that wherever religious exercises are held in this State on Thursday next, Thanksgiving Day, a col lection be taken up for tbe benefit of the Oxford Orphan Asylum, it has also been suggested that voluntary contributions from those unable to attend tbe Thanks giving services might be handed, as most convenient, to the Master of the nearest Masonic Lodge, or to the pastor of one of our churches, to be forwarded to the Su perintendent of tbe Asylum, at Oxford, North Carolina. In no better way could we manifest our gratitude for tbe blessings of the past year than by .contributions to assist in main taing an institution which is doing so much good for that class of persons who have been bereft of parents to watch over, care for and provide for them. Our Bar and Blver Improvement Condition of the Works. We learn from Mr. Bacon, Assistant Engineer in charge, who was in the city yesterday, that the dam at New Inlet is in good condition. The base is everywhere wide, and at low water mark it is generally more than thirty feet in width, with very wide slopes, especially on the sea side. There have been times when there was some reason for discouragement as to the success and permanency of the dam, but not within the past year and uow there is no cause for a shadow of a doubt. A complete survey of the Bald Head Channel is being made, and the result will be reported within a few days. So far it ahows that there is a good and wide channel across the outer crest of the bar of thirteen feet depth at mean low water, and the same depth is found as far inward as the survey has progressed. Ta Llakhaw murder Case. We learn from Col. D. K. McRae,' who was present, but bad nothing to do with the case, that the jury, in the matter of the State vs. Miss Linkhaw, were simply dis charged after the mistrial, but the officer who had them under his care at tbe time they became separated was fined $100 by tbe presiding Judge and ordered to be im prisoned for thirty days. It is probable, however, that the fine will be remitted and the party discharged. ty See fourth page for other local news "Does your mother know you're out," said a boy to his brother who did not go to school because he had caught a bad cold.
