The alarm of fire yesterday, about noon, was caused by the burning of a lot of rosin at tbe corner of Front and Queen streets. No damage. The only case before tbe May or yesterday morning was that of Wm. Brown, a small colored boy, charged with disorderly conduct, who was soot below for ten days. Mr. Glaus Sohriver, a promi nent German farmer of Cape Fear Town ship, in this county, died somewhat sud denly of malarial fever on Monday night last. He was out in his field on Saturday. It is a noteworthy fact that five physicians of ibis city have died during the present year, as follows: Dr. J. E. Free man, Dr. Carl Bufkbardt, Dr. A. E. Wright, Dr. W. W. Davis, and Dr. J. Francis King. If Committed for Larceny. John Gurley, the Bmall colored boy al- J hided to In our last as having been arrested for larceny, had a hearing before one of the Magistrates yesterday. It seems that the crime consisted in stealing $2 from a child's bank at the residence of Mr. Joseph Snee den, at Myrtle Grove Sound, aed also a quarter of a dollar from a pocket-book, on a table, at the same time. The evidence was positive, and it was further shown that the boy, though only about eleven or t wel ve years of'age, is aid in iniquity. On or about the 1st of May last, Messrp. H. & L. Brunhild, of this City, and Mr. W. L. Meadows, of Henderson, N. C, commenced the manufacture of tobacco in Wilmington, having their building and machinery erected on Cbesout, between Sixth and Seventh streets, and known as lhe nape Fear Tobacco Works. It was an entirely new field for this particular branch 0 nAAr9 .nd enternriae. and at first the establishment of a tobacco nufcetory here was regarded more in tbe light of an experiment than otherwise, and no little tion was indulged in as to it, proba- U1V muuvuvJ VT. on ou-u speculation is at an end, the proprietors be ing enabled to say that operations have thus far been very successful, beyond even their expectations. The works are under the exclusive supervision of Mr. Meadows, who claims to be the oldest tobacco manu facturer now in business in the State, and who knows about as well what to do with the "weed" in preparing it for use as any man in the country. They turn out both ping and smoking tobacco, the material used being principally the product of Gran ville County, which Mr. Meadows claims to be the best in the State, if not in the coun try. The favorite brands of chewing to bacco are known as "Capt. Jack," "Hia watha" and "Rob Roy," though others are in considerable demand. Their smoking tobacco, we are informed, is also steadily growing in popularity. About fifty hands, white and colored, are employed in the works, and about one I thousand pounds of plug and smoking to bacco together are turned out each working day The boxes in which the chewing to bacco is packed are imported from Detroit, Michigan, but conld be just as well manu factured 'here, and probably will before long. The bags for the smoking tobacco are made in Richmond, Va., where they have regular manufacturers engaged in the business, with which there can be no com petition here at present. The proprietors bare in contemplation, they inform us, of erecting a large btick building for their works at an early day, as they find themselves entirely too cramped in their present location already, so rapid has been the growth of their business. Mr. Meadows showed us a letter from Mr. John A. Downey, an old tobacco man, formerly of Granville county, in this State, but now of Houston, Texas, making inqui ries in regard to the facilities, &c. , for man ufacturing tobacco here. The establishment of tobacco manufac tories in Wilmington will, of course, lead to a more extensive cultivation of the "weed" in this particular section. In fact, the proprietors of the Cape Fear Works have already had sample lots sent them for inspection by farmers in this vicinity. Personal Brad Journalistic.
