At the City Hall yesterday, at 3 p. m., the thermometer indicated 76 de grees, being the same temperature as that at the same hour on Friday. The Rocky Pointers .celebrated the advent of the New Year by a - delight ful ball at Gamberg Hall, Friday night, which was largely attended. There were 463 arrivals of ves sels at this port daring tbe past year, ot which 237 were from foreign ports. This is exclusive of email vessels under 80 tons. We learn that our friend Wade H. Harris has severed his connection with the Greensboro Patriot and will shortly re sume the publication of the Concord Sun. The Board of County Commis sioners and Board of Aldermen have their regular monthly meetings to-morrow, the former at 2.80 P. M., and the latter at 7.30 P. M. Mr. W. J. Mr. B. DeForest, the boss tele phone man, has returned from a pleasant trip to New York, where he spent tbe holi days. Mr. D. P. A colored man by the name of Bam Davis, who lives on Sixth, between Prin cess and Chestnut streets, and who runs a flat between this city and points up the Cape Fear river, is reported to have been drowned a few days since. He was down here a. week before Christmas, and returned with the understanding that he would go up the river, where he had some hands at work, pay them off what was due them, and then get back here in time to pass Christmas with his family. Since his depar ture nothing had been heard from him until the report came that he had been drowned: One of his sons, who is an apprentice in Scott's barber shop, on Second street, has gone up the river to investigate the matter. Yesterday there was a report in circula tion on the streets that the body of a drowned man had been found a short dis tance up the river, with his head split open, which was believed to he that of Davis, but we could bear nothing definite and cannot vouch for the truth of tbe report. mayor's Oowri. John Watson was arraigned on the charge of committing assault and battery upon the person of Constable C. W. Oldbam, on Fri day evening last, while in tbo discharge of his lawful duty as an officer. The evidence was to the effect that Constable Oldbam at tempted to serve a warrant, upon the de fendant, requiring him to - appear before Justice Miltis upon a charge ut assault, when he struck the officer with his fist, knocking. him down, and inflicted several other blows upon' his person. He ' was thereupon ar rested by Officer Watkins, of the police force, and subsequently bound over for his appearance. Defendant was orderedio pay a fine ot $20 or be imprisoned for thirty days. J i Peter Walker, charged with disorderly conduct, was ordered to pay a fine of $3, and Thomas H. Smith, a seaman, charged with the same offecce.was required to pay a fine of $5 or be imprisoned for ten days. An Affray.
