The "Evangeline" troape also gives the audience a delightful cruise m "H. M. Ship Pinafore." Tho colored Senator, Bruce, ia to lecture in Baltimore on the "National Progress of the Colored Race." The colored Republicans iu Mary laud have revolted against the regu lar party organization. They do not like the way their white allies manage matters. They are evidently getting tired of being used. The Richmond Dispatch thinks Coukling superior to Seymour iu poiut of intellect, and is certain that he is "in decisiou of character and ability to rule men." We doubt its first position. They are brothers-in-law and live in the same town, Utica, N. Y. Bildad, in the Richmond State, re affirms his declaration that in a few days Grant's declinature or with drawal will be forthcoming. We are sorry. Some how we would rather beat Grant than oven corrupt John Sherman or any or the aspirants. It could be done so easily, too. The Philadelphia Press, Republi can organ, says that "the declaration of General Mahone, the newly-elected 'Readj aster' Senator from Virginia, that he would support for President either Blaine or Sherman in prefer ence to a Bourbon Democrat, is a very important political fact." Just bo. But does Mahone bo talk ? Speaker Randall and Garfield spoke against the movement about the pow ers of committees and the distribution of appropriation bills. We quote a paragraph from Speaker Randall's re marks: "The Committee on Commerce, as I said once before when I was upon the floor, are a law unto themselves. The authorization of the appropriations in the River and Har bor bill ia the only law which looks to the completion of the work provided for in the appropriation: whereas the Committee on Appropriations simply on estimates fur nished and from the laws on the statute book make the appropriations with the ex ception allowed under the third clause of twenty-first proposed rule. That is the only exception, and, therefore, it is a mistake to suppose that the Committee on Appropria tions can do what it has been charged with doing; it can only .make law except in the direction of retrenchment" The Curtin-Yocnm contested case, to which we referred yesterday, is thus reported in the Washington letter to the Baltimore Sun: ''The contestant (Curtin) alleges, inde pendently of the non-registered, vote, that be hat-proved 240 illegal votes to have been cast for the sitting member, and admits that 61 have been received by himself, which would elect him (Curtin) by 99 ma jority, -provided the remaining votes cast tor him were all cast by duly qualified voters, which he does not claim to have tbowB by legal evidence. The sitting mem ber admits that 29 illegal votes have been proved to have been . received by himself, not considering ihe non -registered votes, The VOL. XXV. NO. 112. but claims that he has shown by competent evidence mat ssa illegal votes were cast for his opponent, which would make his own maioritv S79. provided the vntea remaining after deducting 29 were all cast by duly qualified voters, which he does not claim to uave.snown oy any evidence. Good. The Republicans in advance prophesied evil things of the tobacco tax reduction. Conkling, says the Washington correspondent of the Richmond State, "loftily proclaimed, after the passage of the bill, that the Democracy had struck thirteen mil lions from the public revenue at the dictation of the Southern Democracy, a statement about as accurate as that in one of his great speeches in which he declared that the South pays no revenue under the tariff, inasmuch as most of the revenue from this source is collected at New York." But,lo! they are sadly disappointed. Their croaking was untimely. Their prophecy has the lockjaw. The revenue from tobacoo for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1879, was $40,135,002.35; for the year 1878, $40,091,000; showing an increase of $44,000 under the sixteen cent rate. Score several for the Democrats. Mr. Edison will attempt to have 700 lights at MenloPark. He is much annoyed by adverse criticisms of sci entific men, some of whom have not been to the Park to see what he is doing. They condemn him without investigation. He is reported in the Washington Post special as saying: "When I am tbrongh with my light, when it is runuiug all right ia New York, I am going to .attend to these men. I will build a monument-base fifty feel wide. On this I will put the names of all of these so called scientific men, togethecwith what they have said of my light The column shall be capped with an aaa? head and this insciiption: 'But remember, my masters that l am but an ass. mougu u oe not. writ ten down, yet, forget not, an ass.' At eight I will have the thing lighted up with elec tric jets." Gen. Ben Butler made an argument before the House Committee on Elec tions, iu which he showed that one hundred thousand voters were dis franchised in Massachusetts by the educational qualifications. That State gets credit, however, for these one hundred thousand discredited voters who never vote. The Baltimore Sun's Washington letter says: "Attention baa more than once been called to the argument that a strict en forcement of the fourteenth amendment, such as those States determinedly insist upon where the South is concerned, would abridge the representation in the lower House of Congress of at least two of the New England States." Simpson, the poor old man who has been going about our streets for a year or two past, asking alms. and often applying for responsible positions which it was known that his age and in firmities rendered him incapable of . filling. The old man died at the residencaof a gen tleman in Brooklyn ou Thursday night. He was about seventy-seven years of age, and baa a wjfe living about ten miles up the river, near the line between New Hanover and Pender. One of Mr. Simpson's pen chants was to get on the police force, and he made frequent applications for a posi tion, being influenced thereto by mis chievous parties. . ' Ttae LeeiBre Wednesday Kventnc It is not at all likely that the public will forget the lecture to be delivered at the Op era House, on Wednesday evening next, by Col. D. K. McRae, on the interesting sub ject of Poetry, being the second of the se ries for the benefit of the Wilmington Li brary Association, but it may not be amiss to allude to the fact occasionally, or, in the language, of the politicians, to "keep it be fore the people." The lecture will be on "Poetry" sure enough this time, and we ex pect to see a large audience in attendance to hear what is to be said about it. We can be assured of one thing: that it will be a great intellectual treat. WILMINGTON, Local Don. Sexagesima Sunday. "Whoa, January" ! Step up, February. Day's length 10 hours and" 24 minutes. - We notice the 'venerable Isaao Wells on our streets, after a long absence. This section was visited by an other fine shower of rain yesterday morning. There was only one trifling case of drunkenness for the consideration of the Mayor yesterday morning. The Register of Deeds only is sued one marriage license during the past week, and that was to a colored couple. Tho visitors of the Ladies' Be nevolent Society will meet at Dr. A. J. De Rosset's residence on Tuesday, February 3d, at S o'clock P. M. We are glad to learn that Mr. J. D.'Nutt's injuries from the explosion of a bottle of creasote, alluded to in our last, have proved to be very slight. There are four children in one family in this city with the whooping cough. It is pretty lively when they all get to "barking" at the same time. The new horses for the "Little Giant" steam fire engine, which reached here Friday evening, will be tried to-morrow. They are fine looking animals. The Board of County Commis sioners and Board of Aldermen will meet in regular monthly session to-morrow; the former in the afternoon and the latter at night. fc. : We are glad to hear that Mr. Newkirk, who was injured by being caught in the machinery at the Navassa Guano Works Friday, was able to be out in his piazza yesterday. The Criminal Court for this county, it should be borno in mind, meets one week from to-morrow.' Many may be deceived by the fact that all the other ses sions commence on the first Monday in the month, and put in their appearance to mor row only to be disappointed. We learn from the Raleigh Observer that Gen. Johnstone Jones is to be in Raleigh this week, and that steps are to be taken, it is understood, to revive a pro per interest in the N. C. State Guard at all points. Something in the way of a revival is badly needed by our white military down this way Indignation meeting No. 2, we understand, will be held in the Second Ward to-morrow night, by colored Repub licans of this city, to give vent to their dis satisfaction at the appointment of Collec tor Canaday as one of the delegates for the State at large to the National Republican Convention. Mr. Nathan Mayer, whose de lightful singing at numerous amateur con. certs has won for him an enviable reputa tion, was suffering with a severe cold at the Operetta Friday night, and could not do himself justice.' The reason was apparent to everyone, however, and his plucky effort was loudly applauded. Alias) Louise Ponuror The next attraction to the lovers of the drama will be the appearance at the Opera House, on Monday evening, of Miss Louise Pomeroy, a talented Shakespearean actress, as Rosalind, in "As YouLike It," acknow ledged by all to be one of the most beauti ful conceptions. Miss Pomeroy is pro nounced by competent critics an actress of much more than ordinary cleverness and vivacity, and met with cordial receptions during a former visit to this section. She has been playing at various towns in the Western part of the State for some.weeks, and, judging from the comments of the press, she was everywhere greeted by ap preciative audiences. On Tuesday evening Miss Pomeroy will appear as Pauline, in the familiar drama of "The Lady of Lyons," which has always been a popular favorite with play-goers. New Coin to be leaned. There seems to be a prospect of the in troduction of several sew coins into general circulation. A favorable report has been made on,, bill creating three new coins. Specimens of these coins have been struck off at the mint. They are the etella, the 25 gramme silver dollar, and the goloid metric dollar. The "etella" is a four dollar coin, of six grammes of gold, three-tenths of a gramme silver, and seven-tenths gramme copper. It ia larger than the five dollar gold piece, and very bright looking. Sylvanns Cobb thus writes in the "Boston Christian Freeman" : We would by no means recommend any kind of medicine which we did not know to be good particularly for infants. But of Mrs. Wins low's Soothing byrupwe can speak from knowl edge; in our own family it has proved a blessing indeed, by giving an infant troubled with colic pains, quiet sleep, and its parents unbroken rest at sight. Meat parents can appreciate these blessings. Here is an article which works to perfection, and which is harmless; for the sleep which it affords the Infant is perfectly natural, and the little cherub awakes as "bright as a button." And during the Erocess of teething its value is incalculable. We ave frequently heard mothers say they would net be without it from the birth of the child till it had finished with the teething siege, on any considera tion whatever.
