The Ifc6idsville Times says Mrs. Settle, the mother of Judge Settle, was se riously injured while descending a flight of stairs in Reidsville, last Monday, by miss ing a step, which threw her violently against the wall. Mrs. Settle is in her 80th year, and it is feared that she will not re cover from the injury. Statesville Landmark: J. W. A. Kerr. Esq.. of this county, writes us that he has in his possession what he Bud poses to be the oldest biscuit in North Car olina. It was, he says, "kneaded and baked by Capt. Wm. R. Greensboro Beacon: Conside rable excitement was created in this county on last Saturday by the arrest of Henry times, a worthy citizen of Brown summit neighborhood, on the charge of burning the house of Frank Chilcutt The case came up for a bearing Monday; in this place, and the -trial consumed nearly two days, but resulted in the acquittal of Mr. nines. The Methodists of the Salisbury circuit contemplate building a parsonage on the circuit, and have de cided to locate it at China Grove. Rutherford College has 152 students. Dr. W. W. Gregory, of this city, claims to have just invented a lamp which in cheap ness, in the size and quality of the light it makes, and in safety, excels anything of the kind ever given to the public. The principle employed is similar to that of the Sir Humphrey Davy's safety lamp, used in mines, the light being made by the burning of the oxygen of the air, which is set free by a process known only to himself and his son, Dr. Richard K. Gregory, to whom the new lamp has just been sent for inspection. Col. Frank Coxe, after infinite trouble with the red tape regulations, yesterday re ceived the $300 set of harness which were stolen from him about nine months ago by the negro Gus Byers, who was sent to the penitentiary. It took six weeks to get it from the thief, and Bight months to get it from the Commonwealth of Virginia. An intelligent farmer, who resides a short distance from the city, reported yesterday that the snow failed to kill the fly which has done so much damage to the wheat crop. It is said that Davidson College is anxious for the telephone line from Char lotte, and the citizens will do all in their power to get it. On Sunday, the ISth ulL, a Presbytery, consisting of Revs. A. D. Cohen, of Carthage, W. R. Gawltney, of Raleigh, and Dr. Pritchard, of Wake Forest College, organized a Baptist church at Manly, on the Augusta Air Line, and, after the election of Rev. A. D. Cohen as pastor, the new house of worship was ded icated to the Lord with appropriate services. It-was a mistake. There is constant talk about the matter of the sale of the road, and almost every paper in the Rtata seems to favor it under the condi tions named. Mr. Best returned from his visit to the road, Wednesday, with Major J. W. Wilson, the President, both going to Washington City on business in regard to the proposed -purchase of the road. C, on Fri day last, appeared at -the station-house Sunday night, sick and destitute, and was accommodated with shelter for the night. shot Hlmaelf. Intelligence was received in this city last evening that Mr. E. F. Riddick, a telegraph operator at Charlotte, N. C, had shot and killed himself, at his home in that city, yes terday afternoon. Whether it was a case of accidental shooting or suicide was not stated. . It is supposed, however.that it was intentional. All that is known is that after attending to his duties at the Telegraph office he went home to dinner at the usual hour, and whilst in a room at his house shot himself through the left breast, dying almost instantly. Mr. Riddick was well known in this community, having been stationed here several months as one of the operators of the Western Union Telegraph Company, was of a lively and genial nature, and held in high esteem by many friends. He was a native of Richmond, Va., and was mar ried a few months ago to a young lady of Charlotte, iu this State. A inild Badly Burned. Little Emma, a three year old child ot Mr. L. C. Williams, of Harnett Township, in this county, was dangerously burned on Thursday last. The little girl was stand ing near the fire, when a gqst of wind sud denly blew the door open and caused the flames to flare out from the fire-placeand ignite her clothing. Her mother, who was In the piazza at the time, was startled by a heart-rending scream, and, upon rushing into the house, found her little daughter enveloped in flames. She instantly seized a bucket of water, which happened to be handy, and threw the contents upon the child, by which the fire was extinguished. The girl was badly burned about the breast and stomach, and at first her life was des paired of, but yesterday, when her father left home to attend Court, the little suf ferer's condition had improved somewhat, though she was not considered out of danger.
