MORNING EDITION. Entered at th Poet Office at Wlhntngtoau N. C OUTLINKS. At Lea Vega, New Mexico, some desp radoea attempted to rescne' a Condemned prisoner; the jailor was fatally shot. The English Liberals are in a decided ma jority. The English elections give distress to some of the Powers, while Rus- sii is delighted. 1 A" large tobacco warehouse burned at Ripley, Ohio. '-- An extensive strike is progressing among the New Jersey railroad employes. Tbe depredations of a band of robbers in Chester county, Pa., excites great alarm amoDg the inhabitants. The strike on tbe Cumberland & Piedmont Railroad has ended, and trains are running again. Germauy is alarmed at the Liberal victory in England; it is believed that tbe peace of Europe would be more assured under a Whig government. Ottawa, Kansas, was visited by a cyclone Friday evening, which destroyed many residences and over turned railroad cars; a child was killed and many persons injured. The striking mill operatives at Cohoes, N. T., are ready to back down. Forty-two- persons were killed by a colliery explosion in Bel gium. New York markets : MoBey G per cent; cotton firm at 1313ic; Southern flour unchanged and quiet; wheat Jfe Terish and unsettled at $1 321 381 for ungrnieil winter red; corn about 3c better; ungraded 5455c; spirits turpentine quiet at 4445c; rosin $1 50. The Elevated Railroad stocks in New York have tumbled. Johnny Roach is again trying to get a subsidy bill passed for his benefit. Johrjny is modest and savoury. The Democrats would do well to let alone all subsidy projects. The well informed Philadelphia Press thinks that "the venerable old University of William and Mary" is located at Charlottesville, Va. See its issue of April 3d. . Send it a his tory of Virginia. The Cincinnati Enquirer has more lying correspondents than any other paper in the country. It has one or two employed hands in the South who have a way of taking ant sensa tional stories that are adrift and tele graphing them as true, dating always at or near the place where they are located. The latest effort of this kind is an account of "A Tarheel Romance," dated at Lamberton, North Carolina. The correction has already appeared in the Stab. The news from New York is that John Kelly is weakening and there is a big surprise for the country in a few days. When this all happens we we- will believe it. As a piece of news we give'it. The reconciliation between the two factions is to be brought about through the agency of what is known as the "Democratic Union." The New York Tetter in the Philadelphia Ledger of April l,8ays: "The report at the Democratic clob houses to-day is, that theaituation has taken a sudden turn for the better, and that 'John Kelly is weakening.' This report cornea trom several sources that should have cor rect information, and it is worth printing accordingly. Ir may be proper to say, however, that Mr. Kelly's fnendsdeny that heis weakening, but the average City Hall politician, in delicate cases of this kind, usually acts upon the Talleyrand principle, that 'language was made to conceal, not to express one's thoughts.' As tbe matter stands, i am inclined to think that the next few days will be prolific of interesting events, the outcome of which will affect tbe political situation far beyond Gramercy Park or the Comptroller's office in the City Hall." ' All this may tarn oat to be only a great "April fool." The House Elections Committee hava declared that neither Donnelly, (Greenbacker), nor Washburne (Republican), was eleoted from Min nesota. Speer, of Georgia, voted with the Republicans for Washburn; and Springer, Speer and Phister voted with them against Donnelly The Richmond State's Washington correspondent gives this account of what occurred in the committee : "There was an exciting scene in the committee room when the sub-committee's report in favor of Donnelly was rejected. Manning, of Mississippi, said Springer of Illinois, bad promised to vote for bis report and had broken his word. Chairman Springer replied with dignity that tbe gen tleman was mistaken, he had not promised to vote for Donnelly. Man ningsprang up excitedly and shaking his index finger at the chairman, ex claimed, "Yon did ! you did I" and inti mated pretty broadly that Springer bad changed bis mind under the influence of Tilden during his recent visit to New York city. Springer again protested that he bad not made any such promise, and Manning called him a liar. Springer, retaining his eel (possession, said the gentleman from Mississippi will retract that. Manning said he would for the present, and Springer said lie must retract aConce and forever. Other members bf'4he committee' interposed peaceful coaasels and Manning withdrew the charge toying. in effect, that be did not mean all he said." - Donnelly is wealthy and uses "cuss words" freely. He was a long and useful member of the Baptist church, whose place now vacant it will be bard to filL ; A dog fight on Front, between Market and Dock streets, yesterday after noon, attracted a crowd of nearly a hun dred persons. A big dog jumped upon a smaller one with a vim that apparently meant mischief, but the little -dog finally . got the better of his huge antagonist and was about to "chaw him up" when his mas ter interfered in his behalf. Lipscomb, colored, was arrested Friday night, at his house la this city, on the charge of stealing a .box of tobacco containing some 1 sixty-five pounds, the property of Messrs. Brunhild & Bro. jit seems that a drayman, in the employ of the above firm was going along Water street, in the latter part of February last, when he put off the box of tobacco and some arti cles to relieve his horse, leaving the goods in one of the business houses. Upon re turning, a short time af towards, the tobacco was missing, and suspicion rested upon Lipscomb as being the thief. Upon the affidavit of the drayman a warrant was issued by .Las lice McQuigg for bis arrest, and also a Bearch warrant lor the recovery of the tobacco, which were placed in the hands of officer C. H. Strode. Upon being confronted by the officer, and charged with knowing something about the tobacco, Lipscomb offered to pilot him to the spot where the box, was concealed, and the stolen property was subsequently f ound in a gallberry thicket last beyondSeventeentb street The tobacco .was placed in charge of Special Deputies J.W.
