Th'.ro are fifteen States relied upon by the Grant managers to give him the noraibation that gave a Demo cratic majority in 1876 of 530,467. In spite ot the storms of March 22,000 immigrants landed in this country during that month. It is expected that the immigration from Ireland daring the year will be very larire. The Democrats will probably take the responsibility of unseating Wash barn, of Minnesota, who is a Repub lican. Whether or not bis contest ant, Donnelly, will get his place we are not. informed. According to late newspaper re ports Uncle Sammy Tilden is in a very, very bad way. He is said to be "palsied in both hands and totter ing on the brink of the grave." The case of cadet Whittaker is an uppermost topic iu Washington. Congressmen are even talking of not voting supplies to West Point until the mystery is unravelled and a just and honorable course is pursued. It iBBaid some Democrats share with Republicans in these views. We find the- following Extract from a n C . It is just as much, a mystery to us as it is to the world outside of the Academy, except mas we are positive that no one in the corps did It. There are not any three cadets who would do such a cowardly act. and even if there were, the rest of us would be sure to know it. and we would have run them off the post at the point of me oayonet long before this. JNo one is more anxious to have this thing cleared up than we are, and all we want is to have the guilty parties punished. We sympathize with Mr. Whittaker if he did net do it himself, and if any cadet did it the others would have immediately informed the au thorities." Spirits Turpentine. Gol. Charles R. Jones, of the Charlotte Observer, has withdrawn from the mayoralty contest. Hickory JPress: Capt. R. B. Davis sold 700 pounds of tobacco at Hall's warehouse this week, which averaged 41 cents. New Berne Nut Shell : Four hundred boxes of peas were shipped from this city yesterday on the steamer New Berne. The late Senator Mangum did write his name Willie as the lorcJtUgM said. A distinguished citizen of Hillsboro who knew the eminent Senator well, is our au thority Franklin Reporter: We have it from good authority that engineers will be placed on the liahun Gap Short Line Railway in this county on or before the lOlh of May. We hope a certain editor feels belter by using for bis own purposes a paragraph that appeared in these coIueqbs concerning the extreme paucity of local news on some day a week or so ago. Oxford Jorchlight : Rev. D. E Jordan has tendered his resignation as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in this place, and last Sabbath morning preached bis farewell sermon to the congregation. We learn that Mr. Jordan will move to Henderson. Lincoln Progress-. From all the information we can get in regard to funding the debts of the C. & L. N. G. R. R., we have strong hopes of the extension of the road from Dallas, and the Directors are to meet in a few days to make arrange ments for the work to begin very soon. N. C. Presbyterian: On Sabbath last six persons were received into member ship of the First Presbyterian church of Wilmington, .North Carolina (tisv. Dr. J. K. Asheville XJitizen: Mr. Dortch is justly recognized as a gentleman of ability, of tbe strictest personal integrity, and as a North Carolinian having tbe best interests of his State and of her people at heart. Of all the people in tbe State those of Buncombe county will derive the greatest benefit from the sale of the western North Carolina Kailroad to Messrs. Beat & Co. Leaving out of view the in comparable advantages of the concentra tion of tbe roads at Asheville, will be added to the taxable property of the county about one million of dollars. Charlotte Observer: Mr. J. B. Thomason's dwelling house, in Steele Creek township, was burned to the ground tbe latter part of last week. Everything in the house was destroyed, not even the provi sions being saved. His neighbors went to work to rebuild for him, and already the framework of tbe new bouse is up. The Biblical Recorder is said to have attained a circulation of nearly 5,000 copies. This we take to be the largest of any publication in North Carolina. There is noteworthy activity all along the Baptist lines in the State. Gen. Stephen D. Lee has been elected President of the Mis sissippi Agricultural and Mechanical Col lege. Gen. D. H. Hill holds the same position in Arkansas. It is a curious in stance of converting "swords into plow shares, and spears into pruning-books," pot books, rather. Durham Plant: We were mis taken in saying that Molz, the overseer on the University Railroad, had been dis charged. He and Col. Holt were bound over in a bond of $1,000 for their appear ance at tbe next term of Orange Superior Court. The heaviest snow storm for the past twelve months prevailed in these parts last Thursday. It commenced snow ing about 10 o'clock A. M., and fell thick and fast till after dark at night. Near the Methodist church in Durham is bdried an unknown soldier, who laid down his life in defence of bis 'country. We suggest that his'remains be disinterred and moved to tbe cemetery, and on tbe 10th of May his last resting place be marked by a suita ble monument and bis grave strewn with flowers. Raleigh Recorder : Rev. F. M. Jordan's meetings in Wadesboro and Liies ville - were of great -interest, and the churches were very " much strengthened. - -Rev- W. They went up the river as far as Hilton, where they landed and en joyed a pie: saot pic-nic under tbe beauti ful grove, with its carpet of green, which 'is so peculiarly adapted for such purposes. iThis part of the programme being con cluded, !!te boat steamed back to her wharf, v. ucn the excursionists again landed and spent a few hours iu walking about the city. Shortly after 4 o'clock in the afternoon the patty reembarked on the steamer and were toon "homeward bound," followed by the good wishes of our citi zens, who considered their visit a very pleasant surprise. The excursion was given for the benefit of the Methodist parsonage at Smithville, and we are glad to learn that the proceeds will be likely to meet the present re quirements. a r tit: i : 1 j : i .1 accompanied the excursionists on the re turn trip. kupposed Case of Attempted Infamt i clde. ! A case of supposed attempted infanticide was brought to light in this city yesterday morning. A colored man by the name of Robert Haywood thought be heard tbe cry of an infant in a sink some ten or twelve feet deep. He secured the assist ance of Officer Robert Green, of the po lice force, and the two, after some diffi culty, succeeded in finding and rescuing a newly-born babe, which was alive and well at last accounts. The mother of the child, a mulatto girl, aged 17 years, by the name of Susan Waddell, is under the surveillance of the police. i Since writing the above tbe child has died, having breathed its last about 1 P. At the close of the testimony Tate was or dered to give a justified bond in tbe sum of $100 for bis appearance at the 'next term of the Criminal Court, to answer to the charge of an assault with a deadly weapon, and a like bond in the same sum for his appearance to answer to tbe charge of car rying a concealed weapon. Charles Tate subsequently swore out a peace warrant against David Hall, which was heard before Justice Millis, the evi dence being to the effect that Hall had fre quently threatened to shoot Tate. Hall was thereupon required , to pay the costs and give bond in the sum of $50 to keep the peacef or ninety days.. Hall, as before stated, has bat one leg, and in action and appearance is very much like an Indian, having long, straight black hair. . When the result of the investigation was made known to him, he became very indignant, jumped from his seat, bopped about excitedly on his one leg, raved and ranted, invited somebody to "chop bis head off," and declared emphatically that he would not pay a cent.
