Mr. John A. Sanders, near this city, two or three years ago. ' One Ephraim Smith was the principal witness against him. He testified to the effect that Mer rick on one occasion proposed to him that they should steal Mr. Sanders' furniture and burn the house. Witnesj declined, giving as his reasons that his wife was in the employ of Mr. Banders, and it might go hard with" her, and he thought it a risky business any way. Merrick told him he would take the furniture down to the sound and sell it, and Mr. S. would never know anything about it. Witness, how ever, still refused to embark in the enter prise. A short time subsequent to this conversation Merrick again broached the matter to witness, saying he had to "make a raise" immediately, as Mr. Ban ders wouldn't employ him, and he had to have some money. . The same" night Mr. Sanders' house was burned. - There was other testimony, but it was rather conflicting, one of the female wit nesses swearing that Smith told her be burned the house himself. Upon being cross-examined, however, her replies were very unsatisfactory. Defendant was ordered to be held for trial at the next term, of the Criminal Court on the charge of arson, and also for steal ing a gun and some other articles the pro perty of Mr. Sanders, which were left in the house on the evening of the night it waa burned, and which were afterwards traced to Merrick's possession. A wait In K his Trial. In alluding to the United States prisoners in jail yesterday, we omitted to mention Samuel Grice, colored, charged with tam pering with the mails. Tbe defendant in this case is accused of taking a letter from the post-office .of a neighboring town, ad dressed to Samuel R. Grice, which, upon being opened was found to contain a check in payment for certain lumber, which Grice knew must have belonged to another party, having been warned to that effect by some of his friends, but be persisted in claiming it, and subsequently got it discounted. His case was continued by the District Court at its late session, and Grice will remain in jail until tbe next term of the Court, which meets on the first Monday In November.un less he gives the necessary bond. Calvin McKoy, colored, mentioned in our last as being in for violating the reve nue laws, has been released. Meeting of tne Slate medical Society.
