VOL. XXVI.--NO. 73.
We jire apt to forget ' how the
weather of a past year was. We
went over our files yesterday and ga
thered the following as to the wea
ther of last summer in Wilmington:
June was decidedly, pleasant al
through the month. The heat scarce
ly got above 80 degrees any day. In
July there were many hot days..
We note the hottest. It ranged aa
follows: July 10, 95 degrees; 11, 95;
12, 91; 13, 103; 18, 90. The. hot
Saturday, 13th, surpassed anything
known in this city of increasing
population. The other parts of the
month the heat sometimes reached
83, but generally not more than 80 or
81 degrees. In August there was
one hot term, beginning on the 7tb,
90 degrees; 8,94; 9, 93. Tbe next
dayit fell to 67, when j fires and
thick coats were in demand. Sep
tember was a hot month. I Septem
ber 2, 81; 3, 83; 4, 84; 5, 88; 6, 86; 7,
81; 9, 84; 1779; 18, 83; 19, 81.
"Bildad," of the. Richmond State,
thus refers to the discussion in the
Senate between Hill and the two
South Carolina Senators:
"Hill reviewed with marked ability tbe
arguments of tbe South Carolina Senators
against unsealing Kellogg, and roughly
replied to their personal allusions to him
recently., Although not ten feet distant
from them be bellowed like a mad bull, so
that his voice sounding in the corridors
attracted people from without tbe chfmber.
"Hampton replied with a coolness and
dignity that was in striking contrast with
Hill's bullying manner. In fact. Hill's
manner was more offensive than bis lan
guage. "Butler's blood rises quick and he does
not hesitate to thrust through his enemy
on the spot. His remarks were heated,
keen and effective! Among: other things
be said Hill was ever boasting that he had
always been and always would be a Union
man, but there were four years when be
took care to say nothing about it."
Wake Forest College set. the Uni

we hope it will be careful to copy
next year. It made no D. DV By
the way, Trinity conferred the de
gree upon but one minister and that
too without his knowledge or con

any degree which had to be sought
after. He is not after that' kind.
The Doctorate was a complete sur
prise to him. The Stab has been in
sisting for a long time that the con
ferring of honorary degrees was be
ing greatly overdone. It has insisted
that the custom was more honored in
the breach than in the observance.

"Tilden 185. Bayard 117. Hancock 84,
Seymour 63, Thurman 67. Field 44, Hen
dricks 37, Randolph 18 (in New Jersey),
Chase 14 (in Maine), Morrison 8."
Of Tilden's 185 only 12 are from
the South. How is tbe old man to
name tbe candidate with only 185
followers?
The Illinois delegation will under
no circumstances vote for Tilden.
Democratic members of the Illinois
delegation in Congress say that the
State ticket nominated at Springfield
is the strocgest in all respects that
has over been put up by any party in
Illinois, and- with a corresponding
National tioket they say the State will
be certain to go Democratic in No
vember next.
The Richmond State reminds the
public that the editor of the Okolona
States, in the South, and the Lemar's
Sentinel man in tbe North, tbe two
rabid est men in the country in cry

ped in their respective sections, and
both took it quietly. As usual the
loudest iu crying for blood proved

MBS. WENSLOW'S SOOTHING SYRUP. Kev.
SylvanuB Cobb thus writes in the "Boston Christian
Freeman" : We would by no means recommend
any kind of medicine which we did not know to be
good particularly for infants. But of Mrs. Wins
low's Soothing tsjrup we can speak from knowl
edge; in our own family it has proved a blessing
indeed, by giving an infant troubled with colic
pains, quiet sleep, and its 'parents unbroken rest at
night. Most parents can appreciate these blessings.
Here is an article which works te perfection, and
which is harmless; for the sleep which it affords
the infant is perfectly natural, and the little cherub
awakes as "bright as a button." And during the
process of teething its value is incalculable. We
have frequently heard mothers say they would not
be without it from the birth of the child till It had
finished with the teething siege, on any considera
tion whatever. Sold by ail druggists. 25 cents a
bottle.
