There is but little activity at the hotels yet, though oat four working days remain before the meeting of the Democratic Con vention. Raleigh Pu: Proceeding from its dead beadism were some ugly features in the convention to-day. A dead- nead delegated convention is something new in North Carolina, the like of which we never hope to see again. ., Charlotte Southern Home: It is rumored that Oliver H. Dockery will be iJowa's opponent in tbe coming canvass, The Pioneer Fire Company annually present a gold medal to tbeir most punctua member and most gallant 'fireman. This year it was won by Mr. A. A. Hand. Reidsville Tfrnesi Mr. Thos. C Moore, a well to do farmer who lives about five miles from tbia place, was look ing at some goods at Williams & Hopkins' to-day to make himself a suit of clothes and remarked that be bad not bought a Buit of clothes nor the cloth to make them of since 1844, about 86 years, all spun and wove by ms wue. Rockingham Bee : The praise- aeserving ladies wbo conducted tbe late festival at Snead's Qrove, realized $70 for the benefit of tbe MethodiBt Church there. on Dr. North's work. Miss McCall ia a native of South Carolina; her mother, nee Harllee, ia a daughter of Gen. Harllee, of Marion county. Tbe complimented lady is a splendid reader, especially in tragedy, scarcely less so in comedy. Charlotte Observer: Dr. Craven has held twenty-six regular commence ments at Trinity College. He (Jar vis) asseu lor an endorsement or nis course as Governor since his accidental elevation to that office and has received it, after one of tbe warmest preliminary campaigns ever witnessed in the State, in which tbe zeal of friend and supporters baa occasionally overstepped tbe bounds or policy. . Kinston Journal: Last Satur day and Sunday were extra hot, the beat measure runoiog up near 100. The wheat crop just harvested is inferior, though not quite as poor as was expected several weeks ago. Tbe coru and cotton crops are extra good. lr no better offer should be made at the stockholders meet ing, the sentiment of this section is to ac cept this proposition and lease to the W. & W. Koad. Carthage Index: The pro miscuous conferring of degrees by our State inititutions should be condemned. Tbe practice becomes more and more dis gusting. Tim was when to receive a de gree from a college was deemed an especial honor. Maj. Price, a well known colored man, wbo taught school in Wilson several years ago, delivered the an Dual address, and his effort ia highly com" plimented by those wbo beard it. Charlotte Press: The "Jarvis Section" have carried the day at Raleigh, which is oot greatly to be wondered it; tbe thing now i to carry the election withbim. During Col. Mam Jonea speecn in nominating Jarvis, wben be made the allu sion. uo to Malvern mil and asK, nis voice was drowned by the yells of the Fowlc men, who disliked tbe attempt to create such a rallying cry in behalf of Jarvis, and it was. kept up ten or fifteen miuuies before quiet could be restored by tbe chairman. If tbere hid been a second ballot Scales, tbey aay, would bave beaten both Jarvis and Fowle. Col. Fuller made the speech of the day. It is pro nounced simply magnificent. Mecklen burg, although ber choice waa for General Scales, followed the deceptive instruction, and cast ber vote for Jarvis. Lenoir Topic: We regret very much to hear tbe Democratic Executive Committee aay "a large number of good Democrats of this county are in favor of letting all wbo wish to be candidates have a fair field." Died, at bia residence in Burke county, on tbe 8th inst., Mr. Robert Alexander, in tbe 78th year of bia age. George Hill, colored, who was convicted of larceny at the April term of the Criminal Court for New Hanover county and sen tenced to imprisonment in tbe penitentiary for six years, made bia escape on Monday aat from the gang with whom be was wink ing on the Quaker Bridge road, near New- bern. Hill was arrested in March last for stealing a quantity of beeswax from one of the river boats, and waa also charged witta the larceny' of a lot of canvas from the Messrs. Kidder's saw mill. At the time of his escape be was engaged in carrying water from a well to the point at which tbe others were working,a distance of about one quar ter of a mile. He had carried water all the morning and part of the afternoon wben be was suddenly missed. Search was at once made in the neighborhood and it was found that be had secretly approached a farm house, where he exchanged his striped suit for a brand new suit of black, owned by an honest colored man. It was also earned that he had been seen in the neigh borhood of the farm late in the after noon. mayor's Court. Mayor Fishblate presided at this tribunal yesterday morning, having returned, from Raleigh tbe n ight before. Possibly some of our read ers may know him. It is taken from the Hackensack (N- J.) Republican of the 17th inat, : "A few years ago there lived in Wil mington, N. C, an eccentric barber named I- njW r, whom everyone called 'the crazy Dutchman.' When business was brisk for a few days, he would generally go on a prolonged spree; but wben his customers were few and far between, he would get dreadfully downhearted and give vent to bis feelings most emphatically. 'Vilminkton Hellinkton I' he was in the habit of saying, as he walked up and down his empty shop ; I curse mine vater on his grave I' One day he came into tbe shop and said to tbe foreman, 'Yell, Fred, how vas. der peezness, dis morgen ?' 'Not very good, boss,' replied the faith ful foreman ; 'there were only a few cus tomers in. and they got Bhaved on tick.' Vilminkton Hellinkton 1' yelled the disgusted proprietor. Then turning sud denly to the darkey bootblack, he said, 'Meeater Sheppard, you goon der cellar und pring mine lamp.' The boy did as directed and soon returned with a lantern, which W r always called 'mine lamp.' Al though it was a bright summer day,, he lighted the lantern, went out and sauntered down the street, looking carefully around as if in search of someone. He had hot gone far when a friend accosted him with, 'Hello I John, what are you after V 'Vilminkton Hellinkton ! I vas after dem tarn tiefa vat vas got trust on mine shop und abeat me oud off mine money ?' 'But what do you carry a lighted lantern for, this time o'day V 'I vas looking for an boneat man,' re plied tbe modern Diogenes as be wandered on." r nABBIBB. BURBANK LIPPITT.
