The'uomtuaiion of Hancock was a splendid send-off. It gave confidence at once. The nominee for the second plact! on the ticket could not be possi bly belter. It is William II. Eng lish, of Indiana. Next to Hend ricks, who would not accept a second place English is the right man. He U frooi tbe right State also. Indiana isaltrays true to Democratic princi ples, and under the leadership of one ef her inost trusted and gifted sons the will stand fast by her colors. Mb. English was born in Scott coujuy, Indiana, on August 27, 1822, anwill be therefore fifty-eight years oil? at bis next birthday. He received a collegiate education; has been a successful lawyer; Iks been Speaker of the Indiana Legislature; was a member of the United Slates House of Representa i ves from 1853 to 1861; has been often spoken of as a possible candi date for the Presidency, is a gentle wan of pure life, high integrity and superior abilities. We regard his selection as a most judicious one, aud can but believe that a benign and propitiojfe' Provi dence overruled the action of the Convention for the good of the party and the welfare of the whole coun try. Esq.. of Wilmington, and C!nl K Y. McAden, of Charlotte, as delegates to represent the Btateor Horth Carolina in preliminary meetings to be held in New York City, to make arrangements for tbe great World's Fair in 1883. Col. Thoa. M. Holt and Julian S. Carr, Esq., were named as alternates. Fayetlevillo Banner: Rev. N. B. Cobb, of this town, received a very large complimentary vote in tbe convention for Superintendent of Public Instruction. Tbe census report for this town will show a falling off in our population of more than one thousand since last report. We cannot say this is unaccountable, for vfe know that our young men, and a good many older ones, too, have been compelled to seek homes elsewhere to make a living. Gaatonia Gazette: About 5 o'clock last Saturday evening, this town was visited by a fearful storm. It blew down and into a promiscuous pile the frame of Dr. Adam's new Drug Store, moved the frame of a large dwelling now going up for CapL J. Q. Holland, and twisted the dwelling house of H. H. Spencer from its foundation, besides blowing down gardens, fences and trees in many places. There was some hail but not enough to do very considerable damage. No one was hurt. Winston Sentinel: Thermome ters, during the past few days, ran up to 100 degrees and over. A little child of Mr. Frank Whitfield, of this county, nar rowly escaped death by falling into a well en last Tuesday. Tbe frantic father came to the little one's rescue just in the nic of time to save it from a watery grave. Mr. Charles Fisher, while running one of the machines in Messrs. Fogle Bros', pla ning mills Friday, accidentally caught one of hia bands in it, which resulted in the loss of two (infers and a third badly sliced up. Oxford Torc7dight: The supe riorly of tbe Granville lands is fast be coming known, and its prices are advancing with tqual strides. Last Saturday there were several tracts sold at tbe court house door for from $18 to $20 per acre land which, within tbe memory of some of the present generation, baa been sold for the nominal sum of fifty cents per acre. After numerous very bitter and desultory speeches from tbe negroes, T. L. Hargrove, boss of the Radical party of Granville, and at one time Attorney General of the State, mounted tbe stand and proceeded to de nounce in tbe bitterest terms and vilest lan guage ever heard, and entirely too filthy to hod a place in our paper, the Democrats of tbe county and State. At one time he waxed so warm in the expression of his pent-up wrath for the white Democracy of tbe county, that be mounted tile rim of the judge's stand and swore fiercely at the en lire representation of the party. Raleigh Neios: We are very glad to learn that Mr. E i. Fayetteville fired a hundred guns yesterday in honor of Hancock's nomination. The thermometer ia the Stab office yesterday ranged from 86 degrees at 9 A. M. to 00 degrees at 2:30 P. M. The first Hancock and English flag in this section was thrown to the brcizs early yesterday afternoon by Dr. W. H. Green, at bis store on Market street. The census enumerators will be a at the Court House on Monday and Tues day next, with their Hats for tbe purpose of making alterations and corrections of tbe same. Tbe annual examination of the scholars of Misses Burr and James' School has been progressing this week and will be concluded to-day. The annual soiree and exhibition will take place on Tuesday even ing next at the school room in rear of St. James' Churcb. The dog-catchers captured a large lot of dogs yesterday; but nearly all were redeemed at the City Hall only three or four were killed. About three hundred badges have been issued by the authorities; but there are yet hundreds of unlicensed curs about the city. Wife neater. Harriet Jonei, colored, made complaint yesterday -against her husband, Jordan Jones, for assault and battery. The luck less couple have been on bad terms for some time past, and have bad several slight difficulties recently, all growing out of jealousy on the part of tbe woman. Two days ago, in one of their angry! disputes, Jordan knocked ber down and! beat her badly, for which the made complaint to Justice Millia. Jordan submitted his case, promised better behavior , and was let off with the costs. ' WILMINGTON, N. C. FRIDAY, JUNE 25. 1880. HANCOCK AND ENGLISH. Grand Rallr of -lb Democracy One Hundred Gam for the Nominee Eaibatlaim ana Bejolclug. A salute of one hundred Runs was fired yesterday afternoon at the foot of Market street, immediately upon the receipt of the news of the nomination of Hancock and English aa tbe Democratic standard bearers in tbe approaching Presidential campaign. Two of tbe guns of the Cape Fear Light Artillery were used, manned by members of tbe company and under the direction of its officers. At night an impromptu gathering of the Democracy was held at the City Hall. The Cornet Concert Club was on hand, and dis coursed excellent and appropriate music while the crowd were assembling. ' The meeting was called to order at 8:30 o'clock by Joshua T. James, Esq., on whose motion Mr. A. H. VanBokkelcn was called to preside. Upon assuming the chair Mr. VanBok kelea explained the object of the meeting in some appropriate remarks that were well received,, The Democrats of Wilmington had assembled to ratify the nominations made at Cincinnati. The following vice chairmen were then chosen : Col. Roger Moore, Col. John W. Atkin son, James Welton, Sol. Bear, Col. John D. Taylor, Mat James Reilley, Patrick Glavin, John Haar, Jr., Walter Coney, Robt. McDougall, Col. James G. Boxr, W. H. Bernard, T. C. James, F. H. Darby, John W. Perdew, W. P. Oldham, M. M. Katz, R. M. Mclntire, P. Heinsberger. Tbe following gentlemen were chosen Secretaries: Capt. John L. Boatwright, Capt. John Cowan and Joseph M. Cronly. Upon motion a Committee on Resolu tions, consisting of five, was appointed. Tbe chair named Messrs. T. B. Kingsbury, J. H. Currie, Col. B. R. Moore, Maj. T. H. McKoy and James C. Munds. Mr. T. B. Kingsbury was then loudly called for. He responded in a brief speech. Msj. D. J. Devane was next called out. He made a short, telling speech that was loudly cheered. The Committee on Resolutions reported through their chairman, Mr. Kingsbury, the following resolution: Setaived, by the Democrats of Wilming ton, in mass-meeting assembled. That we have heard with unfeigned satisfaction of the nomination of General Winfield S. Hancock, of Pennsylvania, for President, and of Hon. William H. English, of Indi ana, for Vice-President, by the National Democratic Convention in session at Cin cinnati; that we accept the admirable selections made as tbe signal and omen of success; and I to that end we pledge our selves to the most enthusiastic and persis tent support, doing all we can to make tbe banner of Hancock and English float in triumph over North Carolina and over the whole Union when the sun shall go down on November 2d, 1880. On motion the resolution was adopted amidst tbe most enthusiastic applause. Tbe following gentlemen were called upon and made short, pithy speeches of congratulation on the excellence and strength of the ticket nominated yesterday at Cincinnati, viz: Col. Roger Moore, Mr. Thos. W. Strange, Col. J. G. Burr, and Maj. F.D. Poisson. Upon the conclusion. by Major Poisson calls were made for Col. B. R. Moore, Capt. John Cowan, Mr. John L. Holmes and others, and these gentlemen not re sponding. Col. Roger Moore proposed three cheers for tbe nominees, which were heartily given, and the meeting adjourned. We may add that the meeting was enthusi astic, harmonious and spirited. It was an excellent send-off, and is the beginning, no doubt, of a lively contest in the Cape Fear section. Thermometer Becora. The following will show tbe state of the thermometer, ;atthe stations mentioned, at 4.31 yesterday evening, Washington mean time, as ascertained from the daily bulletin issued from the Signal Office in this city: Atlanta 81 Augusta 86 Charleston, 87 Charlotte 87 Corsicana, 83 Galveston 80 Havana 87 Indianola 82 Jacksonville 86 Key West, 90 Mobile 88 Montgomery 88 New Orleans,...-84 Punta Rassa, . . . .90 Savannah 83 Wilmington.... .90 Wbii la staid About it. Tbe news of tbe nomination of Hancock and English was received here with the heartiest satisfaction. Every Democrat spoken to on the subject, expressed his gratification at the result. Prominent Re publicans in the eity haven't much to say about the nomination; they are evidently afraid of it. One of them, however, ven tured to remark, "that ticket will be hard to get over." Carrying; Concealed Weapon. Milly Jackson, colored, was yesterday bound over to appear at the next term of the Criminal Court for New Hanover county in the sum of $50, to answer to the charge of carrying concealed weapons. Milly went to a ball over in the First Ward the other night. Some fellow put bis foot on her trail and she "went for him" with a little pistol. "Hence these tears." KIVBB AND MARINE. On reaching home and acquainting his wife with what he had done, ahe rof used to have it ad ministered to the child, as she was strongly in favor of Homoeopathy. That night the child pasted in suffering, and tbe parents without sleep. Returning home the day following, the father found the baby still werse, and while contemplating another sleep less night, the mother stepped from the room to at tend to some domestic dunes, and left the father with the child. During her absence he administered a portion of tbe Soothing Syrup to the baby, and said nothing. That night all hands slept well, and the little fellow awoke in the morning bright and happy. The mother was delighted with the sudden and wonderful change, and although at first offend ed with the deception practiced upon her, has con tinued to use the Syrup, and Buffering crying babies and restless nights have disappeared.
