A brate in Baltimore named Joseph Eslick, caused the death of his wife by beating her. It appears to be the provaiiiog opinion in Georgia that, Governor Colquitt will be re -elected by a large niajoiity. The Bemocratsin New Hampshire ha strong hopes of giving that State to Hancock in November. So bo it. The more the merrier. Gen. Hancock says the report about the $250,000 offer ia a fabrica'.ion from beginning to end. The lie origi nated with a New York Democratic paper. Gov. Jeter, of South Carolina, has directed Attorney General Youmans to represent the Stale in the ap proaching trial of Col. Cash for kill ing Col. Shannon. Evtu the Radical Washington Re publican indulges in a small joke at Blaine: "iliaine wu9 very light wlieu be Scot his dispa'tU lo Vermont. He had no drees I'lirude in Maine. It wns much Dearer a list diicb." Gcu. Plaisted was in the war. He is a hwyer and is 52 years cf age. lie was born in New Hampshire and Lm heen Attorney-General of Maine. Elected by the people as Governor m; was counted out by Blaine's Bull dozing Board. Georgia elects a Legislature and State officers on October 6th. Indi ana on October 12th elects Legisla ture, Stato officers and members of tho United States House. Ohio votes on same day and elects a Legislature, members of the United States House aad minor State officers. West Vir ginia voles on same day, and elects a Legislature, State officers and mem bcrs of the United States House. All the Legislatures save Ohio will choose one United States Senator. The present House of Representa tives has five majority only.. This shows how important it is that the Democrats not only should hold their own but make gams. Already the Republicans have gained one. It will be a shame if Hancock should be handicapped at the start with a Rad ical House. The Washington Post thinks the Democrats will gain thirty seven and lose bat five. We will be glad to find so favorable a result after the elections. It is a too san guine view, we feel almost certain. In a recent conversation reported in the Louisville Courier-Journal as occurring at North Vernon, Indiana, on Taeaday last, a young Radical lawyer named Olcott said that they (the Rads) "had got about all the niggers they wanted and they were going to vote 'em." One Rowan said that their "intention was to get all of their doubtful men in in the morning; that they intended to have three Deputy Marshals at the polls, nd in the afternoon they intended to arrest several of the Democratic voters who hadn't good backing, in order to scare others out. and keep as many others as possible from voting" It was ascertained that seventy-five men imported from Cincinnati were to work on the "road between Ver non and Greensbnrg for Horace Sodtt until after the election, their labor to cost him only their board while so engaged." And this is the way the Democrats of Indiana are to be cheated out of the election, if it be Possible. " TBS STATE OAIdPAlGN. The Senatorial Convention of Rich mond and Montgomery counties selected Mr. James T. LeGrand, of Rockingham, as the Democratic can didate for the Senate. Dr, J. M. Uiaat Raleigh Garfield, Buxton and Bledsoe Club, number ing 860 members, protest against the nomination of J. N. Moore, were on a 8till.hunt up at Clinton on last Thursday. E. W. Kerr, Esq., met them very effectually. That night, at or about 8 o'clock, they orated to a handful of colored people who had been gotten together for the occa sion. Warsaw Brief Mention. We see by the last issue of the Beacon that Col. Winston has deci ded to enter the race for Congress in this district as the candidate of the Greenbackers. It seems from the correspondence published that he hesitated to announce himsejf until appealed to so to do by a committee of three Greenbackers from this place. Greensboro Patriot. Governor Jarvis speaks to-day at Wilkesboro, and Judge Buxtpn, it is said, has slipped up to Person county. The J udge is getting bolder. He is going within a hundred mires ot Jarvis. Mr. Thomas G. Wo undei stand that tho Republi cans will have Judge Buxton in Con cord about tho 23d, to make them a speech. There is a split in our party this year, but it is a direct re sult of the '78 outrage. Its coming was foreseen and no power could ward it off. It is now regretted that the ticket was bolted in 1878, and thoso who were the leaders in the bolting movement then must suffer the consequences now. Concord Sun. Hon. W. T. Dortch will address the people of the Nahunta, Great Swamp and Pikcville section at Fre mont on Saturday next. "Cap- ting" Ralph P. Buxton made his ap pearance in this town on 1 uesday last. The meeting was a complete failure. The audience numbered less than two hundred, and a gocdly number of these were either Democrats who had not learned that a division of time with Mr. Dortch had been declined, or were attracted there by idle curi osity. Parker Canaday, who had an appointment to speak at Lisbon Friday at noon, "got left" by the regular train on the Weldon road. So, he opened his "bar'l" and paid $45.00 for an engine to take him to Magnolia. Verily, there's nothing like having a healthy campaign fund when a candidate is behind time. But when the Hon. Back Parker Canaday "gets left" on the second of November all the locomotives in the United States won't be worth 45 cents to him. Xne ftxarltet Question A Klppio ot Excitement. V A little stir In market circles w as caused yesterday by the fact that some of the butchers took possession of certain stalls in the old market house during the forenoon and commenced selling beef. This was deemed by the authorities .as a violation of an order passed by the Board or Aldermen vacating the old market house, and, after consultation, the Chief of Police was di rected by Acting Mayor Bowden to notify the parties that they must stop selling meats or other marketable articles in the old mar ket house. At 2 P.M. the parties inter ested were notified that they must vacate in two hours. A little after 4 P.M. one of the butchers was found at his post selling beef, and he was thereupon arrested by Chief Brock and taken before Acting Mayor Bowden. at the City Hall, who bounoThim over in his own recognizance for his appearance before the City Court Monday morning. He was thereupon re leased, but an officer was dispatched to the old market house to guard the same, with instructions to arrest any one caught in the act of selling beef, etc., from any of the stalls; and pretty soon the same butcher was again arrested and marched up to the City Hall for violating the order. He was a second time recognized for bis appear ance and then discharged, when it was re solved by tho butchers, we learn, not to push tho matter any further, the step being taken by them, we understand, with the view of testing the right of the city to keep them from using the old market house. Acting Mayor Bowden, who, it is well known, has from the first antagonized the new market scheme, nevertheless feels himself called upon,- in the absence of Mayor Fishblato, to enforce the law of the city with regard to the old market house as it now stands.
