It it i-iuiiU.l: "Nailing the Lies": Yrsierday Truth, in common with .iiIkt ilailv journals throughout the oiiiT.uy, published Geu. Garfield't .Iriiml ot the authenticity of his let i i on L 'hioese cheap labor, which we t. !l iven to the public. It is, there f.;rt , expected of us that TYuth shall muko good our declarations that the letter is genuine; that it passed through the United States mails and Umt the interests of the workingmen of America will therefore really be jeopardized by Gai field's election. The authenticity of that letter is now the pivotal point of this campaign. Cy his assertions and the assertions of Ins party iu respect to it Gen. Gar tielJ must staud or fall. We appre ciate the responsibility that rests upon 7 ruth, and 7ruth will meet it as it de Horvea. We find that Garfield's friends deny the existence of an employers' union, the existence at any time of Henry L. Morey, and the genuine ness of the postmark upon the enve lope in which the letter was enclosed. And Garfield himself repudiates the letter. In other words, Truth is ac cused of forging a letter, forging a postmark, imagining the existence of a non existing league and inventing II. L. Morey. We have already done all that can be done in the nature of the case to prove that the letter is in the band writing of James A. Garfield, ex cept to fully produce the opinions of competent witnesses who are familiar with his handwriting. That we promise to do, and to accompany the evidence with a variety of specimens of bis handwriting, indisputably at tested, for comparison. No more can he done in this direction, because no witness actually saw the letter writ ten and the man who originally re ceived it is dead. But our proof shall be Buch as would be amply sufficient in a court of justice to convict James A. Garfield of having pennod the let ter with his own hand; that the Em ployers' Union was an existing organ ization when the letter was mailed; th3t Henry L. Morey, of Lynn, Mass., was a living, moving being at the same time, and that h wa the chief promoter of that union willjbe proved so conclusively that, so far at this point is concerned, the wilful false hood of Garfield's supporters, such as the New York Times, will be incon itatably established. Finally, we sliall prove by indisputable specimens f Washington postmarks of last winter, specimens vouched for by the heat authority, that the postmark upon the envelope of Garfield's I Chinese cheap labor letter is a genuine ' Washington postmark of last winter, and that the irostmaster of Washing ton, when he denied its genuineness yesterday, lied for the double branded liar who heads the Republi can tickvt and whose cause he sought to serve by the lie. The damnable sentiments of Garfield's letter could not be advocated or explained. Only one Republican paper has dared to approve them. It was therefore deci ded promptly upon the appearance of the letter to meet it with persistent denial and deliberate falsehoods. This policy has been consistently pursued. The Times began it by asserting that Morey and the Em ployers' Union were myths. Garfield followed by disowning the letter, and the W asfaiington Postmaster capped tho black column with a semi-official statement that the post mark i&i forgery. When we have proved by positive evidence that the Times lied, and by positive evidence that the Washington Postmaster lied, we shall leave it to our readers to say if the specimens of handwriting and the opinions of the witnesses we shall present do' not convict James A. Garfield also. We are a young paper, our twelfth month only will begin on eleotion day, and our facili ties for 'putting our evidence into shape for publication are more lim ited than those of older journals. But to-morrow, or by Wednesday at least, we shall off er to the . country the proofs we have promised, and we now predict from that time forth there will be no doubt in the minds of honest and intelligent men that James A. Garfield has not hesitated to resort to black lies and foul slan ders to save his failing cause, and that in this criminal and despicable polioy he has been advised, encour aged and aided by the party he rep resents, by its organs and by at least one of its prominent office-holders, whose falsehood is as wilful and des picable as that of Garfield himself. A Chance to make $1,000 Mr. Jewell's Committee has a fine opportunity to add $1,000 to its available resources without calling on department clerks, messengers or floor scrubbers, but we dou't expect they will ga'.her in this offering. Mr. Benjamin Nickerson, the orig inal owner of tho De Golyer pave ment patent, is out in a card in which he agrees to pay $1,000 into the Gar field corruption fund upon the pre sentation of a certified transcript of the Board of Public Worfcs, District of. Columbia, of any opinion, written, printed, or otherwise, filed or offered to be filed with said Board by Gen.
