Among the oldest editors in the State it is a pleasure to be able to bear witness to the ability and effec tiveness of our Democratic exchanges in North Carolina during the cam paign just ended. We do not know that tho papers as a general thing are any better edited now than formerly, but the taut, vigor and industry manifested during the prolonged and exciting canvass have been noticea ble. We do not think we have known the Democratic papers to be so efficient and earnest and forceful as they have been in the great strug gle of 1880. Wo could bpecify somo weeklies that have been particularly strong and useful, but it is belter perhaps to make no invidious de stinations. pirits Turpentine. I he RIeeiloo Yeeterday. More interest was manifested in this city yesterday than at any previous election for mmy years. Iq the First Ward, from the moment the polls were opened until they closed, there was a perfect jam. More es pecially was this the case in the lower di vision of that ward, which bad for its vo ting place a building on the corner of Seventh and Red Cross streets. Here the crowding to get to the aper ure where the tickets were taken was fearful. The color ed people poll a large vole here, and it was amusing to witness the expedients resorted to by them, as by sioe of the white voters, to get to the coveted spot. Being more kupple, they as a rule, succeeded where the whites would fail, and when an energetic I aud persevering voter would finally succeed I in wriggling and pushing and jamming his I way ibrougu lue surging mass of hu- mahity, and had cast his ballot, the next tuiug was to get out, aod this Usually proved a mo e aerious buiuesa, if any thing, thmi Hi U itt gelling in. This was in moat cases accomplished by the voter "thiuniuK" a small ticu cl-ac lo the cor ner of the buildiog, and in immediate proximity to the voting place, and finally forcing bis way lo the top of the shed, whence he jumped to I tie ground. Others were lifted by tuoir friends on the ground and at the same time pulled by others on the bbed until they had safely landed on the 1 oof, while others btill were raited up to a level with the heads of the crowd and then prvcipitatrd across the closely packed mass lo a sifu position 00 thu outskirts ot the swayuij.', ianliog multitude. This state of all urs was owing in a great meas- ure lo ibe largely increased vote in this j ward, and 10 the fact that the multiplicity I of tkkeia required so much more time on I the part of the poll-holders ia taking and recording tha votes, in doing which, on account of there being so many tickets and nine ballot boxes, they were compelled to exercise more than usual care. When the sun went down quite a number in this ward, both white and colored, bad not vuUiL -Hotwitnstanding the great jam, I however, theru was no disturbance until just s the pulls were on the eve of closing, and then by the promptness of Chief of Police Brock, Aldermen Bjwden, several policemen and other peace-makers, the riotous proceedings were nipped in the bud. In the Fifth Ward the same state of affairs existed to a great ex'ent as in the First, but there was no serious disturbance until late in tho afternoon, when the prompt action of Mayor Fuhblate and others quelled the disorder promptly. In the Second, Third and Fourth Wards, both sides were very active, the best of humor prevailed, however, aud everything I naat nff nnlpllv I The returns iu t,his city as far as received are as follows: first ward.
