MORNING EDITION. entered at the Poet Office at Wilmington, N. C, as second-class matter. TUGHOVSSAND S KN&TE. Tho Senate will bo Democratic. Giving the Democrats California, the vote will stand 40 Democrats to 3G Republicans. This places Mahone among the former. If, however, he affiliates with the latter (a not im probable thing) the vote will be 89 to 37. If California should be Rad ical and Mahone should vote in the name way, theu there will bo a tie, and Absalom Arthur, the kicked-out, will have the casting vote. The chances are favorable to Democratic control of the Senate. Tho House will be Radical by from five to ten votes over the Democrats. The Greenbackers will have probably seven members. Report says Gen. Sherman will go on the retired list and Gen. Sheri dan will become Commander-in-Chief. ilayts rejoicing in a public speech over the election of Garfield was a gt u.eio behold. Fraud and biibery kiting each other. I he electoral vote appeals to stand, Gaitield 219, Hancock 150 majority lr Garfield 09. This count gives Ci il'-rnia to Garfield. Juiiius Brutus Booth, eldeBl son of iLeyital Booth and brother of Ed w i., inauY a hit in Richmond, Va., lad v.nk. Like tcme of the others lie list histnmi.o genius. George D. Wise, Democratic can didate for the U. S. House iu the Richmond District, fanned out his cousin John, Mahone -Readjuster, to the music of 2,308 majority. Cousin John will not be a member of the 4 7ih Congress. George's majority i.ui of Richmond was but 48. California and Oregon have gone Radical it is said. This makes it 20 States for Garfield and 18 tor Han cock. Garfield's majority in New York will bo about 18,000. His plu rality in Connecticut is 2,331, ma jority 1,102. Indiana 7,000. Han cock got but two Northern States New Jersey and Nevada just enough to elect, with New York. The making of a Cabinet for Gar field began before he was elected and the manufacturers are Hiill at work. A Washington dispatch to the New York Herald says: "So far, counting Mr. Ben liarrisou for lie SiHle Department; Mr. Sbetman, Tiesury; Mr. Piatt, Postofflce; General L ij;an. Interior, and James F. Wilson, At-ii-inty General, five of the seven Cabinet places are provided for by the gossip. But theie is some expectation here that Mr. Garfield may offer the Secretaryship of War to General Grant. The General's friends say that he really did immense ser vice in the canvass; tbat be ought to be rewarded; that he lik$3 Washington and bus a house here; Ibaf he could scarcely afford to go abroad on a foreign Mission; tlint l e wants something to do, and tbat, in short, the War Department ought to be given him. There are others who urge That he ought to bave the Department of Siate and that be would prefer this of all the Cabinet places." There are many rumors in New York city about illegal votes. The Democratic State Committee has ordered an investigation of the re turns. A special to the Philadelphia Times of the 4th says : "The Democrats are quarreling over whether Kelly sold out Hancock in New Yoik and whether Boss McLaughlin did the same in Brooklyn. New York State's majority decreases with every fresh return from the rural districts, and it will probably be between 16,000 and 20,000. Dugro's majority over ABtor for Congress ia only 42. At tbe Tammany Hall general com mittee meeting to-night tbe election was freely talked over and it was denied tbat there was any trading on Tammany's part, but it was admitted that Grace burdened the ticket and lost votes for Hancock. There is a very bitter feeling against John Kelly by all classes of Democrats and tbe defeat in tbe State is generally attributed to him " Can tbe following be true? We find it in a Radical organ, the Balti more American, which has a long editorial by the way, addressed to its "Southern Friends," not thereby meaning, as you would suppose, the negroes and their white masters, but the late defeated the old Democrat ic party. Bat here is the statement we refer to: "In Georgia, upon the assembling of tbe Legislature, it was found tbat some of tbe Democratic leaders were in favor of casting tbe electoral vote of the State for Garfield. Garfield does not need it, and the act, if accomplished, would not affect tbe result of the election. Perhaps they might all resign or let a new set be ap pointed or elected by the Legislature, if such a thing were seriously contemplated, but we have no idea tbat it is. It is, bow ever, a very pregnant circumstance that it should be considered at all. It looks like a divorce between the Southern Democrat and the Northern Copperhead a divorce of a marriage tbat has borne no issue but folly and defeat." m VOL. XXVII. NO. 40.
