" Punch I VPK1 OF SOCTHKRN CEIAItAC TUIt ibn Mender, Clean-Cai Type aud ldmaut!ue Coutervatlfe. lvi'u igii, N. (J , Later in Spriugfleld Re publican. Society, aud social forces iu gen eral, as they strike the traveler in the South, are written about and dis cussed with that pleasing freedom from prejudice, and broad and com prehensive outlook, to be gained by studying such forces from car-windows or the piazzas of Southern hotels. Glib paragraphs flow easily from the pen of the "intelligent cor respondent," who investigates the political situation, for instance, through the testimony of poor whites aud frightened negroes or the half drunkeu speech of a stray fire-eater, and who fancies that the secret of all Southern mysteries is at his fingers' ends. VVith an obtuaenesa truly British, and inherited probably from some Saxon progenitor, he judges these men by the same set of rules governing his estimate of peo ple iu Northern life, refusing to be iL've for a moment that" any allow ance t be mdsi for divergence from Hie common stock. And if mo dern English literature has no place, far lts that of America! Emerson, 11, Longfellow, Hawthorne, eaeta uothing to him. American WleriAMre is summed up in a shelf below U these stately old classics, vet consciously enough, ranging in hi mental field side by side with them. The criticial faculty, keen or appreciative as it may be when con cerned with the limpid flow of a Spectator's essay, or the etateiy pe Tiods of Barrow or South, seems quite in abeyance when this shelf is in question. On it are found vol umespoems, novels, travels, as a rule below anything we are often called upon to judge under these ti tles flowery, gushing, mawkiBh and generally unendurable, yet read with an admiring energy, and quoted with ardor as thexleepest expression from "one of the inspired souls of the cen tury." They are the works of South ern wi iters; a host unknown to any Northern ""audience, yet numbering now over 300 names, all believed in a devoutly as we in our younger days believed in all authors. There are no such loyal and ardent readers alive, save in these quaint old libra- ' ana nes, and their purely fcoutnern crea tions are accepted and loved simply because thev are boutnern. The old cavalier passion of loyalty fry in these people to some thing adamantine in quality, ana what was once adhesive to the divine right of kings is now belief in the divine right of States, and the abso lute impiety, the unforgivable sin of any one who meddles with the-tradi-tions of these States. At the North these men would be students or dreamers, incapable of influencing the popular mind or vote. At the South they hold a power never taken into account, but absolute and un questioned, and the Southerner who desires a better future for his chil dren than this generation can hope to know, recognizes in this power something against which it is well nigh useless to struggle. All the ftrengili and vigor of the keenest bigotry is at work, and as in all cases where a conviction is firmly held aud iutensely believed in, produces a cor responding effect. Southern women are moulded by it, aud in turn tho children whom they influence. 32 Market St. 32 K j , - v. w-r Sign of ths Show Case with the Shoe maker. jyjY STOCK OF BOOTS AND SHOES ALWAYS complete.
