'V'e gave yesterday an extract from the account of the late meeting uf the stockholders of the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad, but we did not give all. We supplement it with a few facts. There was an overwhelming sense on the part of t lie private, stockholders to lease to iht? Wilmington & Weldou Railroad. The vote as published showed that, Col. Juhri L. Morehead, who repre sented 350 8hart-s ot private stock. ! hired unequivocally that he was against iieht'f proposition under any circumstances, and the reason he did n;t voie for the Wilmington & vVehlon offer was because he did not v.ib io commit himself, but hoped foi a still better bid from some one els. The bid of the W. & VV. was .i3,000; that of Beat $34,000, and xtill the 6eutimeut against Best was overwhelming. In fact, be stood no ehance of getting but 39 votes, and a part of this was by his attorney, whu accompanied him. The Kinston Journal says that "the State's proxy, in obedience to the Governor's telegram, refused to vote on the question, and thus de IValed the lease." It says further that the "will of tho private stock holders was overwhelmingly in favor uf leasing." Ii then reproduces two extracts irom arlicles'in the Journal, of the dates of August 12th and August 2oth, 1880. We give the gist of ibeso articles: "We took this to he an intimation that the State's Proxy would break up the luceiiug iu September by reluslng to par ik ipate iu its deliberations, but Gov. Jaivis, in his speech here last Saturday, pal a quietus uu inal by staling that 1i proposed io allow ihe -viU of ihe private stockholder to Qotern in the matter, and toaUow them to lease whenever they desired and to whom they pre ferred." "We Think we can answer in a very few words why the State's proxy will not with draw from Ihe meeting: "1. Because Gov. Jarvis openly asserted in his address here at Kinston that the will of the private stockholders thould be allowed to govern in the matter. "2. Becausa Mr. P. M. Simmons, the Bute's proxy, on the test question of leas ing, at the June meeting voted aye along witti about 1,300 voters ef private stock, aud aflerso Vbling upon full deliberation, he would never resort to a trick to nulhfy that vote. Be might change his opinion as to the advisability of leasing, but would never consaot to block the will of the pri vate stockholders unless positively command ed by the Governor of ihe tUatc." The Star reserves all comment for the present. That great English poet, Alt red Tennyson, in the grandest elegiac poem of the-last two hundred years, in Memoriam, speaks of a "wide aud wandering grave," which is highly poetical. We tried to use the latter yesterday, but we are made to drop into the time-worn "water grave?," with which we dismiss the subject. Ubafle8 Ii. The play is intensely realistic, and was interpreted by one of the best dramatic companies ever in this city. Cyril Searle's interpretation of Coupeau is a treat in itself, and evinces close study and de cided dramatic ability." Another paper says : ' ' Miss Eylinge possesses a pleasing, youthful face and comely figure, a strong and not unmusical voice, and an evident familiarity wilb the business ot the stage. The very strong dramatic power displayed by Miss Rose Eytinga was Quickly recog nized by the audience, and the shuddering snectators paid the bhrbelt compliment to ihe acting of Miss Eytingn that could pos sibly be conveyed. The American actress had a special recognition when the curtain finally felt," The boxabeet is open at Heinsberger's, and quite a number of seats have already been engaged tot the first night's performr ance. mom y umetM from Rnu, For nearly two weeks past officers have been on the alert for a young white girl by the name 6f As me Knox, an orphan, who had been raised in the family of Mr. J.
