A colored Slan In Brunswick. Arrest ed and committed to Jail on ine Charge ol Causing; tbe Deain of nis Own Cblld. There is a colored man, named Sam Hurst, now in Smithvllle jail, on the seri ous charge of causing tbe death of his own child, about six years old. It seems that about five or six weeks ago Hurst and his wife, who are employed on the Kendal property, in Brunswick county, about eightean miles from this city, left the child in the shanty where tbey lived from early in the morning until nearly night, on a certain day, and in the meantime the door shatter, which was only held in its place by a prop, fell upon the child, and it re mained in that position, under the heavy shutter, until Huret and his wife returned in tbe evening, when it was taken out badly bruised and crippled. Then, again, on Sunday last, tbe wife, having been ab sent in this city for a week or two, Hurst got up in tbe morning, built a big oak fire in the fire-place, placed tbe child on a moss mattress in very close proximity to the same and then fas tened tbe door and went off, and about 3 o'clock in the afternoon the shanty was dis covered to be on fire. Parties in tbe neigh borhood arrived at the spot too late to save the shanty, but they might have rescued the child bad they known it was in tbe building. Hurst himself came up in tbe meantime, but turned off without making any effort to save his property or rescue his child. The charred remains of the lit tle one, which consisted of little more than a portion of the skull and backbone, were found among tbe debris in one corner of tbe spot where the shanty bad stood, show ing that tbe child in its agony had crawled as far away from the fire as possible when it was in its incipiency. On Wednesday last Special Coroner Ar nold held an irquest over the remains, when the above facts, i a substance, were elicited, which were strengthened by other corroborative circumstances, and a verdict was rendered accordingly, Hurt being committed to jail to await h a trial at the next term of the Superior Court for Bruns wick county. New Coacn We noticed at tbe W., C. & A. Railroad depot yesterday morning a new passenger car reeently turned out cf the company's shops at Florence, S. C , fr the North Eastern Railroad. Tbe car is fifty six feet from corner post to corner post, and built in the latest style, without end windows. It is finished inside with maple and Hun garian esb, aud presents a very light and cheerful appearance- It has tbe Janey coupler attachment. The car was bout under tbe supervision of Mr. W. H. Day, formerly of this city, and is a credit to the workmen of the Company. ITlaaoule. The officers of St. John's Lodge, No. 1, and Wilmington Lodge, No. 319, F. & A. Alarm of Fire An alarm was sent through the telephone yesterday morning, about half-past 4 o'clock, and tbe engines were out on the streets, but before the general alarm could ba given intelligence came through the same channel that the fire was out, and tbe engines were returned to their quarters. It is cot known whether the alatm was false or only a "flash in the pan." Cnrlatmas.
