Myer, says only about one ftfurth of Ven- nor's weather predictions come true. We give an interesting paragraph from a recent scientific talk about weather and its prognostications, as he, Prof. Abbe, is reported in the Washington Post: "I was a little amused last Tuesday morn ing,' said Professor Abbe, 'to bear ever so many people remark, as they made the be9t "f their way through the heavy snow, that Vennor was indeed a wonderful man. Yet be did not, as I understand it, predict this storm in the slightest. He prophesied, if be Baid anything at all, a heavy snow storm on or about the 22d of December for the Dominion of Canada and the New England Stales The snow, as evervbodv remem bers, was to be eleven feet deep. Our weather-map will show you just bow near Mr. Vennor came to bis predictions. The storm did not extend further west' than Columbus nor farther north than Phila delphia. He was just about 500 miles away from his mark." 111 M0MN6 b VOL. XXVII. NO. 83. The Railway Kevievi tells how distance is to be annihilated between New York and Philadelphia. The distance is eighty miles and a frac tion. It is thought by the new route proposed an engine of sufficient power can make it in an hour. On the trial trip of the Baldwin locomo tive, No. 5,000, it ran at the rate of eighty-one miles an hour on an ascending grade, and no doubt on a level road it would have run ninety miles. Mr. Le Van explained how he proposed to make a locomotive that can perform the latter distance. Ed win Booth is gaining ground in England. On Monday night he played Bertuccio in the "Fool's Re venge, and with splendid success. The London papers are very cordial in their praise ot the personation. The limes says: "There are scenes in the Pool's Revenge in which Mr. Booth confirms the opinion mat ne is a most accomplished actor; but neither in his tenderness, rage nor despair was mere sumcient deDth. tie acts in the last scene with admirable skill. Mr. Booth was badly supported." The Irish Home Rulers are waxing more determined. At a meeting held in Dublin on Monday there were thirty-seven members of Parlia ment present. They resolved "to sit in opposition to every government measure that refuses the just demands of the Irish people, especially that for legislative independence. " Thir ty-seven resolute, united men some of them of good abilities must make themselves fell. Early on Sunday morning last the body of Sidney Hinton, alias Sidney Baugb, was found on the west bank of Neuse river within a few feet of Milburnie bridge, six miles from this city. From the evidence elicited before the coroner's jury, it ap peared that the unfortunate man bad been drinking freely on the evening previous, and was seen going in the direction of the river. At a McDowell mass meeting Mr. W. H. Malone, an old legislator, said: "In my opinion this is a happy era for Western North Carolina. Railroad and telegraphic communications have been es tablished with the outside world we are no longer pent up amid impassable moun tains, and our natural facilities are une qualed. Here in this great undeveloped "empire" we have discovered a new source of wealth. Here we have found the "gol den Eldorado" the soil is peculiarly adapt ed to the raising of fine leaf tobacco. Ex periments have fully demonstrated this fact." Toisnot Some : Rev. J. E. Carter of Wilson, and Rev. W. P. Several months ago, the turbine wheels in use at the old Salem Mill were well nigh choked down by a large number of eels, which, by some means, had found their way into them. A Case ot Larceny. A colored boy by the name of John Davis was arrested yesterday by Officer Watkics, of the police force, charged with stealing a a sail cloth from the boat of a col ored man named Joe Johnson, somewhere in the neighborhood of Market dock. It seems that Johnson missed the article from his boat and bad a suspicion that Davis, wbo had been seen lounging about in that vicinity, had stolen it. He thereupon put Officer Walkins on the track of the boy and he soon afterwards captured him on the street with the stolen sail in a bag on his head. Both boy and bag are now in the guard house awaiting an examination be fore the Mayor this morning. Davis is young in years, but is said to have been before the court at least once before on a similar charge. Foreign Sbipmenta. The Norwegian barque Stanley, Capt.
