BERNARD. WILMINGTON, N. C: Thtjksdat Mobntng. Jan. G. 1881. THE POPULATION. We propose briefly to glance at some of the salient points of the cen sus of 1880. North Carolina is the sixth in the list of percentage of in crease among the Southern States. Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina, T4i4iand West Virginia all lead oar 'State. The percentage of increase for North Carolina is 30.6 per cent., or 328,639. The average increase in the United States is 30.8. Texas shows an increase of 95.1. The to tal population is 50,152,559. This will be subject to change upon a re vision of the returns. Every State and Territory shows some increase. TaeiSialefr north and east of the Po tomao and Ohio do not come up to tbe general average throughout tbe country. In "New England the in crease is very small. In Maine it is but 3.5 per cent; in New Hampshire it but 9.2; in Vermont, 9.5; in Connecti out 16.8; in Massachusetts, 22.2. lo ua latter tne increase is owing mainly to the foreign element. All the States and Territories in i k tiVth.and. tho s e west of the Mis sissippi show a large increase. The total increase for ten years is 11,594,- 183. A like increase tdu ring the next ten years wili bring the popu- lauun up to Qj,uuu, uuu. ine per centage of increase is not as great as it was before the war, when the aveiage increase wa9 35 per cent. If Virginia had not been divided its - 1 population would" have been 2,130,- 396, which would have made her sixth in size. As it is she is four teenth Texaa' has increased more in actual population than any other SfrfttitSr inereaae being 778,930. Te xas and Georgia and Missouri in the South alone exceed North Caro- Tia , , in s , increase.. Georgia has ;t.LVi.A,- r. 4 o4 a nr- . lutioiwcu oj,o anu JYiissAnn 447,796. Maryland shows but little increase outside of Baltimore, the total for the entire State being 19.1. After Texas Pennsylvania shows the largest increase, namely, 760,787 or 21.3 percent.; New York third, with 00,414 or 16 per cent.: Kansas fQurtb, with 625,936 or 169.4 per cent. ; Illinois fifth, with 538,745 or 21.2 per cent.; Ohio sixth, with 533, I 538 or 18.9 per cent. New TnrV t i xt t T ' the Pennsylvania, Ne w Jersey, Ohio, In- l. - diana and 'Illinois-all being nearly Vv in a line from the Atlantic to the Mis- sissippi, contain 18,751,593 inhabi tants. This will do for six States. The States that may be classed as Seaboard States have a population of 26,262,473. This includes, New Eng land, .New York, New Jersey, Penn sylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Vir giaia North and South Carolina, Georgia Florida, Alabama, Missis sippi.. Louisiana, and Texas. The other .States have a population of 239086, lo.the star of Empire still shines on" tha Eastern lbpe. although il " Pj&ffi nearing the Occident. The Richmond Dispatch present Administration thau the re made the same complaint as to the moval of Gen. Schofield and the ap treatment of tbe audience in that pointment of Gen. Howard to the city, which, like tbe one here, was management of Went Point. The most flattering to the actress in its Augusta Chronicle stales the case size and character. The Star did correctly when it says: full justice to Miss Davenport's tine "Scbotltld whs r tired from West Poiut actiDff and dreS8iU2.bat it condemned o - very properly "the sell" practiced upon a $600 house. The entire en tertainment lasted but one hour and thirty-five minutes, for which- the auditors had to pay $1 each. No such fraud as this would be at tempted in New York and right under the lofty nose of the autocrat of the greenroom the editor of the tre mendous Dramatic News. If such an attempt were made and the said J fno-acions editor did not unbottie his o vitriol and unroll his critical cat-o-nine-tails, then he would deserve to have the latter laid on his own shoul ders. The Stae is at least well known enough in this section in which it shines Jnot to allow theatrical impositions without denouncing and exposing them, and it is not paid for either its praise or censure, whjoh I cannot be said truthfully, we appre- I l 1 ( ,u ,r.. ,'rt cnora at t h a UCUU, ui iuo papci biiou Dui.tio uv , 'obscurity" of the smaller sheets. The s tar a year or two since gave I J I its opinion relative to the unwisdom of having a uniformity of Text Books I for the common schools of tbe State. It favored a local uniformity only a uniformity in the books of cities, towns, villages and districts.' T5eyond this it does not believe it is wise to go. The matter- shonld-not be regu lated at Raleigh, but in the general school distriots-j by the county boards, if you please. We believe on tbe score of. economy and Utility that the boards should enforce and prescribe a uniform and well selected series, and that the whole, matter should be left to local boards-or com mittees. The Legislature should take this subject in hand and pass a law, as we believe, relegating the se lection of school books to tbe local boards. We do not think it is practi cable or desirable to have a State unit formity of school text books. In the North where the school system is far more advanced than it is in the South, ' there is a strong, growing sentiment of hostility to a general uniformity j of text-books AO aviMivirYinnf Urn I A I that such uniformitv throughout the State is very expeosive, and in some instances iooperatiye and impraoti cable. ' 06 What horrors are contained in the account of the burning of the tene ment house in New York ?
