We learn from Gen. Manning that there
is a prospect that tbe Legislature will pass
an act daring its present session to so amend
the law in regard to hanging as lo take; U
out of the bands of the sheriff of the vari
ous counties, and bave all executions of
capital felons lo tske place in tbe Slate Pen
itentiary, under the supeivia oo of the war
den, sfier a lapse of uinety days fiom the
passage of tbe sentence. A bill to this ef
fect has already been drawn up for presen
tation, and a good many of the members of
the Legislature who have been consulted
on the subject seem inclined to look with
favor upon ibe proposition. Some objected
at first on the score of expense, but when
they came to understand tba', although fhe
bill provides that the cost of transporting
ihe feloo to the Stale prison. ia to be borne
by ihe county where -the indictment is
found and the prisoner convicted, Ihe
expense of such transportalioa will be mach
ess than (he cost of erecting the scaffold
and taking the other preliminary step re-

quisite to carry out tne sentence oi me
sw. The particular advantage! urged In
its favor, however, is the doing away with
the periodical excitements in communities
where these executions tako place aod
Ihe avoidaoce or Ihe frequent bung
ling executions by inexperienced func
tionaries. We must confecs that we
like the idea aa presented to us, and wiil be
glad to hear that the bill baa become a law.

Nothing more was heard of the affair, ao
far aa we know, until last Mondsy, when

MRS. WINSLOW'S SOOTHING SYRUP. -Rev.
Sylvanus Cobb thus writes in the "Boston Christian
Freeman" : We would by no means recommend
any kind of medicine which we did not know to be
good particularly for infants. But of Mrs. Wins
low's Soothing feyrup we can speak from knowl
edge; in our own family it has proved a blessing
indeed, by giving' an infant troubled with colic
pains, quiet sleep, and ita parents unbroken rest at
night. Most parents can appreciate these blessings.
Here is an article which works to perfection, and
which ia harmless: for the sleeD which it affords
I the infant ia perfectly natural, and the little cherub
' awakes as "bright as a button." And during the
erocess of teething its value is incalculable. We
ave frequently heard mothers say they would not
be without it from the birth of the child till it had
finished with the teething siege, on any considera
tion whatever. Sold by ail druggists. 35 cents a
bottle.
