Daring the campaign the pjpeie aad the peker had much to 417- bo at the comipuocs and uor p.tiooa of the IUpubliean party. Ile caaM the election ia over it need not b aappoeed for a moment that the advocate of atroog government ire titiaSed or have eeaaed their effort to gxther atill more power at the centre. For a hundred year the 10 Aougooiiiog element ceotral- :inoo sod tae government of the people hae been warring, and the fiht i 00 nearer ended now than it m m ihr-aarter of century ago. The fight will continue with gTOwiog ferar and detcrminatioo. That fr ih victory remaio with the eoemie .f republican government go vernment of the people. The ra, iu editorial after edito- r!, pointed out the ujarpilioo nd yatematk and deliberate violation of th orgaato law of the land. We are gratified at the identity of view because it shows we had appre hended correctly the poteocy and number and character of the danger ihat threatened the safety of Repub lican iostitatioo od the perpetuity of the State. He then piopoew, after tbe lapse of nearly a, buodred year, to take ooodiog tba we may ee where wo are. He first point oat uow tbe Federal Government ha oversha dowed the State Governments. He goe into a history of the many en croachments, beginning in 1798. Did it not sav " T7ie veneers not delegated ...v. ir:.c k ,r,f:nn.ti- tutioo, nor prohibited by it to the Stales, are reserved to the States re spectively, or to the peoIe" Mr. Field show that up to that period, with the exception of the tariff, the relation between tbe Fed eral aod Stte Government remained unaltered. He shows that in regard to the tariff there had been great chance. He then considers tbe two thousand national banks, and point to the change in idea in regard to maosging the fiosoces of the coun try. He then specific many radical changes in regard to post-road, holding courts, holding elections, tc. These and other significant points he discusses, and in them all finds tbe most direct, positive centralizing tendencies. We may recur to tbe matter again aod very soon. Having discussed many of these point so re cently we do not deem it necessary at this time to go into the subject a fullv a we would have done other- wise. There sre some points of so I 4 much importance, however, raised by Mr. Field that we shall make no apology for taking them op here after. I( we may trust an editorial io the Augusta ChronicU there are several Democratic Senators who are dis cussing among themselves whether it is better to support the President or Cookliog.
