TUB PRESIDENT. , , -v ., The whole country felt ,a shook is it never felt before when the news flasEeTover the wires yesterday that an attempt upon the life of the Pre sident of the United States had been made, and that he had been wounded, in two places and very seriously. When Lincoln fell before the bullet of an assassin the whole country felt be shock terribly and the South lost very greatly thereby. It was a great crime an J a great calamity. The country had just began to emerge from the fever and blood-shed and horrors of a civil war. Men were at sea. Bad men were more or less in tbe ascendant. The long conflict bad thrown to the surface, amid its mighty upheavals, desperate and un principled men who were ready for anything. But now our country is at peace with all the world, and with itself. There is no political excite ment to arouse sectional or par ty or personal antagonisms. The at tempt, under God's open day, and in the face of men, to shoot down as you would a worthless cur or a fleeing marauder, the President of a great souotry is inexpressibly horri bley. When tbe Czar Alexander was blown into eternity by the infernal enginery of the Nihilists who hated God and humanity, the whole civil ized world was shooked. It is true there was a grinding despotism and the Czar was its head, and still the better class of men revolted from the cowardly and infernal deed. But here, in this free land, where people enjoy liberty far beyond all the other peoples of earth, what is there to justify the horror and immorality of such a bloody, hellish deed ? Nothing, absolutely nothing. The whole country will unite in condemning in the most unmeasured terms this latest act of diabolism. Tbe North and the South, the East and tbe West will unite in one gen eral expression of regret and in one simultaneous thrill of sympathy. There wHl be no party in all this. Every Democrat worthy of tbe name will join every Republican in the Und in denouncing the wicked and vicious deed that could be prompted ouly by a heart as destitute of mo rality as it is of the milk of human kindness. It is to be hoped the assassin will find a quick tiial and unerring justice. The people of the South will join with tbe people of the North in fervent wishes and earnest prayers that Presi dent Garfield may live in spite of the assassin's bullet, and that he may serve his four years with credit and honor to himself and with , blessing to his country and the world. For tbe particulars of the attempted assassination we refer our readers to our telegraphic dispatohes. Texas is wise in its railroad schemes. The narrow gauge railroads are to be so extensively used that a network will cover the southern por tion of the State. Why should not such roads be used when it has been established incontrovertibly that they answer every purpose and are so very much cheaper? If in most sections you can construct a hundred and fifty miles of narrow gauge road for what you can construct one hundred miles of wide gauge, and the narrow gauge answers every purpose of transporta tion and travel, why not build it in preference? Why expend $150,000 or more to attain your end when 100,000 will accomplish it? It is a little curious that the Eng lish should prefer carriages in which tbe travellers are locked as so many prisoners, with no privileges or con veniences, to the American system of cars. Already, by their system, many lives- have been lost, assaults have been made on females, and even mur ders have been committed. The at tachment to the old poor system grows out of English conservative prejudices attachment to the bid beoausa-it is old and because, which is tbe stronger motive in this particu lar case, of the feeling of exclusive ness and superiority that dominates the Englishman. The latest from the Georgia ex citemeot is that' there will be no fight. The author of the . letter, re flecting on Gen. In the meantime excited groups could be seen eathered on the street corners and else where, discussing the contents of the latest bullethand the probable issue of the ter rible, event. ..'..r. i . y.. It will be seen by an advertisement else where in this issue that His Honor, Mayor Smith, has very appropriately called a meeting of citizens at the City Hall to-mor. row, the 4th icstn at 12 o'clock, to take such action as may be deemed appropriate in relation to the attempted assassination of the Chief Magistrate of the Nation. ReaoiattaaTa of 'TliaiUca. The following resolutions have been re ceived by the committee of arrangements who had in charge the entertainment of the recent visitors from Charlotte : : In view of the trip of the Gounod Club to Wilmington, and of their very, great en joyment of the hospitality extended to them wnue mere, ana as a sngnt testimonial oi their grateful appreciation and remem brance of the elegant and charming cour tesy of their hosts, the following resolutions were adopted by the club, and the secretary instructed ta forward them to the secretary of the Dramatic Club in Wilmington : Whereas, The Amateur Dramatic Ulub of the city of Wilmington saw fit to extend to the Gounod dub of Charlotte a cordial invitation to visit Wilmington and present to the people of that, city "Tbe Pirates; of Penzance;" and whereas, the Amateur Dramatic Club and their friends received and entertained, their visitors with a warmth of greeting and a degree of ele gant hospitality which not only surpassed their expectations from a people whose fame as hosts Has . been . irom tne earnest days of the settlement of the Cape Fear rezion a subject which - has baffled the efforts of the most grateful and eloquent toneues and pens, but has also servea as an illustration of the maxim that all true hos pttamy u&s its origin ana us uie in unary and generous natures; therefore, be it RaeHve&i by the Ghuhod Ctub, infuU meet ing assembled. That we desire to put on re cord some.fitting expression of our appre ciation of the universal krndness and innu merable delicate attentions shown us, and to Dreserve in perpetual remembrance the recollection-of our visit to Wilmington; but finding ourselves inadequate to the one, yet more than capable of tbe other, we ' must content ourselves witn mis simple testimonial of gratitude and thanks. Hetoited. That in tne reception ana en joyment of their hospitalities we have formed acquaintanceships from which we can expect only the most agreeable social intercourse. Beaolved, That the secretary of this club be requested to forward these resolu tions to the Amateur Dramatic Club or Wilmington, with the hope that we may be able to reciprocate their many kind nesses, and, in any event, to welcome them to our own homes and firesides. .Mrs. B. L. Dewet, Secretary Gounod Musical Club. June 29th, 1881. Our friends seem to labor under the im pression that they were invited and enter tained here by the "Dramatic Club," which is an error, as we have no such organiza tion. This, however, is of little impor tance, as their kind and complimentary resolutions hsve reached those for whom they were intended. Fonda If We have information to the effect that the Ladies' Benevolent Society have a great many sick on their list, while the funds in bank to meet their .urgent necessities have dwindled down to $28. It should be a source of regret that tbe ladies are cramped and embarrassed in the noble mission to which they are so kindly and considerately devoting so much of their time and atten tion, and it is hoped that, now the necessi ties of the Society are made known, a gene rous public will hasten to send in their con tributions and enable the ladies to minister to tbe wants of tbe sick and needy ones un der their care. Tbe Bxeurslon To-morrow. The prospects are that the excursion on the steamer Passport to-morrow (the 4th of July) under the auspices of the Hibernian Benevolent Society, will be one of the most enjoyable of tbe Sssson. The boat, sfter visiting Smithville and the Forts, and land ing those who do not wish to go outside, will extend its trip to the Blackfish grounds. Special attention will be paid to the pre servation of order, refreshments will be furnished at city prices and good music will be provided for dancers. Iu fact, no pains will be spared in the effort to make the excursion a success in every particular.
