Why was tbe Kinston celebratioo jilMced on the 3rd of Angasl, the day before the election? Who knows? The thermometer at the Star office shows this record for the last five days: Tuesday 26, 88 degrees; 27, 79; 23, 83; 29, 84; 30, 81. Just as we hinted. The articles in the N. Y. Ilerald aimed against the President's physicians were writ ten or inspired by a physiciau "who w is not called in." "It is stated that ex-Gov. Hob bird, of Connecticut, intends to give h $'20,000 law library to the Hartford liar Association."- ,Z2ecAane. It would he more Christian like if w would send $20,000 to that dangh-tt-r of his who married a man: " I he rank is but tbe guinea-stamp. The mant tbe gowd lor a' that." Mr. A. L. Hantt telegraphs to Rich mond, Va., that he acted simply in defence of bis life. The Atlanta Constitution says: "His bearing in the affair was as gallant as any man's could have been, and his friends here have stack by him faithfully all tbe time. To-day the case was called for preliminary examination, and Hantt, waiving ex amination, gave bond for his appear ance. He will have every right pro tected, and has made many new friends since the difficulty occurred." We see it mentioned that Gov. Smith, of Wisconsin, has called oat tbe militia to suppress lawlessness. This moves the Louisville Courier Journal to propose that the South should aid them al this hour. It ttays: "The South has a patriotic doty to perform in this emergency; she should send missionaries and school teachers to tbe benighted men of Wisconsin. If something of this kind is not done Wisconsin and other States will sink into utter barbarism." By all means send the missionaries and school teachers. Tourgee lives at Mayville, N. Y. He is a big man up in those parts. He held a "reception" recently. Ev erybody holds receptions in those re gions, lie calls his new home, just built, " Thornheim" translation, 44 Fool's Home." Tourgee is no fool though, if his "errand" looked that way when be helped to suck the de pleted South. " Fool's Home " was built with the money his "Bricks Without Straw" brought him. He got money from Swepson for his North Carolina home. See "Fraud Commission " report. His new way of getting a home is an improvement on his old way. Tourgee progresses. Vive la bagatelle. Daring 1880"7;000 miles of rail roads were bailL Ul - this 600 were in the South. 'Al this rate vast as our couutry.is, il ."BjU not require many years to cpyer it with a net work. The South gels but a small share. The total mileage of the country is now nearly 94,000 34,000 miles more than Were in operation in 1870. Tbe capital and funded debt oi the railroads, representing cost of road, plant aud . fixtures, is now 4,897,000,000, equal .to a little over 152,000 a mile ; the grow earnings are $615,000,000, and the net earn- ngs are $255,000,000, equal to about 04f per cent, on gross debited outlay. The dividends paid are $77,000,000, or nearly 1 610 per cent, on gross outlay (capital and funded debt) . The N. Y. Churchman, the ablest paper possibly of 'the Episcopal Church in this country, takes ground against the report of Bishop Potter's committee in the case of Rev. Ed ward Cowley, of "Shepherd's Fold" notoriety. We quote: "It makes the rjoint that, the find ing of that bod v 'Dlaocs the Church in U A - the altitude of shielding, bv one of her officers, a man whom a civil court has condemned, and whom no court of her own has acquitted.1 Further on, the editor says: 'It is, of course, proper lor air. tjowley to withdraw from the ministrv. and in Lhat najia the Church would have no further re sponsibility; but as it stands, we be lieve that churchmen are disappoint ed.'"
