The Russian Nihilist is now sitting be tween the hind legs of the British Lion, whose roar is heard in Canada. Oar election table now includes 75 counties, giving the following vote: For prohibition, 41,502; against pro hibition, 130,200. Majority against, 88,96S. The remaining 24 counties, though some of them cast very small votes, will swell the majority to over 1 00,000. On Friday the mercury stood at 89 degrees. On yesterday it was 93, the hottest of the year, but one when it was 95. Owing to the hu midity of the atmosphere and the want of our usual fine breezes during a part of the day, it felt,, like 105. Tbe air was furnace-like. The editorial business is getting to be dangerous. Another one of the quill men has been assassinated. This time it is in Massachusetts, and the unfortunate victim is Charles M. Murphy,- editor of .'the Deer Creek Advance. The assassin is- supposed to be ooe James Thomas. We hope James will dangle. The irrepressible Hammond is out in a letter against Dr. Bliss and the other physicians who have attended the President. He excepts Drs. Ag ue w ana Harmlton from his ' bill of indictment, which consists of. seven counts, all of which occurred within forty-eight hours after the shooting. We find in the Baltimore Sun tbo summary as follwa : "Neglect to make a thorough ex proration of the track of the wound and to locate the position of the- bullet; neglect to remove the frag ments of clothing and of bone which a tter wards ca used suca great suffer ing; neglect to extract the ball while the strength of the patient was at its maximum and before the track had been partially closed by the swelling of the soft parts; treating the case from the first from the' standpoint of guesswork, instead of from actual facta gained by thorough and intelli gent exploration; neglect to give exit to pus that had collected and to pieces of fractured ribs till the con sulting surgeons had arrived from Philadelphia and New xork, and Dr. Agnew did what was proper; being from the first overweighted with a sense of responsibility, owing to the fact that tbe patient was the Presi dent of the United: States." Cameron met Daniel but once, and now hH is "cowed. He failed to come to time at the second appoint ment. He is better, piuuk than that. We prophecy he "will die game." He has some North Carolina blood in him, you see. "Tar Heels" have no better sense than to stick. Vide all of the battlefields in Virginia and sundry reports of sundry Generals. The following from the Fayettevllle Ex aminer give fuller details of the accidental shooting, with fatal result, alluded to by us a few days ago: "A sad accident occurred on last Satnrdsy, at tbe residsnce of Mr. William Orei by. Mr. Edward Khue, of Wilmington, was in the parlor, and going to tbe mantel took up a pistol and told some one piesent that he would show them bow Jim Heaton sbot himself. He first put the pistol to bis side and snapped it, then placing it to his right temple again pulled the trigger, when it discharged and inflicted a oust serious wound. Mr. Rbue, of course, thought tbe pistol unloaded for it bad been lying in that condition for some months. It seems that a few days previous to tbe occurrence a . number one cartridge bad been placed in it by some one who was going to use it, and this fact bad been forgotten. Mr. R. liogered until Tuesday evening about 4 o'clock, when he expired. His remains were Interred in Cross Creek Cemetery." Uunaaable matter. The case of William Phinney, charged with making an assault with a deadly weapon upon one Lucy Morse, about 12 o'clock on Thursday night last, on Dock, between Front and Water streets, came up for preliminary examination before Justice E. D. Hall in the City .Court room yester day morning, the case having been turned over to him by the Mayor. Quite a num ber of witnesses were examined, and the evidence, after being sifted of generalities, was to tbe effect that Lucy Morse and Hannah Watson were on their way to the house of the latter, in company with some strangers who were to be supplied with a drink of water, when, just as tbey arrived at tbe gate, Lucy Morse waa suddenly seized by the shoulders by some one and felt a sensation as if a pin had been stuck into her neck; she turned and recognized in her assailant the prisoner at the bar. Some thing was said about calling for a police man.when Phinney commenced picking up rocks and hurling them at Lucy Morse, one of which struck her on the head. One or two of the witnesses testified to seeing a knife in the hand of Phincy when he first seized tbe woman, and another saw some thing glitter in the moonlight and was con fident it was either a knife or a razor. Some one started for a policeman, and Lucy hollowed, crying and shouting on the street until she reached the corner of Front and "Dock streets, where she fell exhausted and had to be taken to her home. Dr. Walker testified that tbe wound un der tbe Bboulder-blade was made by some sharp instrument, probably a knife, and that the wound on tbe bead was apparently caused by a rock or brick. By permission of the Court Phinney made a statement, which was not calculated to benefit his cause, and at the close of the investigation the defendant was required to give a justified bond in the sum of $100 for his appearance at the next term of the Criminal Court, in default of which he was committed to jail. IHa-or'a Court Wesley Spearman, a colored youth, charged with assault and battery upon Wm. Holmes, another ' colored boy, by striking him on the head with a rock, was ordered below for five days. Wm. Holmes, charged with disorderly conduct, was adjudged to remain in the city prison for eight hours. Wm. Phinney, charged with assaulting Lucy Morse, was turned over to Justice Hall for preliminary examination. 'FLIES AND MOSQUITOES.
