Mr. Sanders came to this county from Onslow some where in the neighborhood of 1824 or 1825, and resided for some time at Topsail Sound. He was a very successful peanut planter and was always engaged prominently in agricultural pursuits. He served some years ago, and very acceptably, as one of the Democratic members of the Board of County Commissioners for this eoun ty, and in all the celations of life he has been esteemed for his "many good qualities. Deceased was about 73 years of age,, and was a half brother of the Willum Mumford who was hung at New Orleans by order of Gen. Butlertand which created such a stir throughout 4ho South at the time ot itis among the Atott disgraceful occurrences ofthe late war- .. " Tbe Mae Friday. The September Regatta of the Carolina Yacht Cltfb, the last of the season, took place over the course at W.rightavIUe on Friday last, and was won by the yacht Batleu. Stedman Fire Com pany No. 1 will have their regular meeting at their truck house on Wednesday even ing, at 8 o'clock. . , Weather permitting, the nana open air religious meeting will be con ducted by Rev. J. W. Craig, at Dudley's grove, this afternoon at 5 o'clock. No interments; in Oakdale or Bellevue Cemeteries during the past week. In Pine Forest (colored) Cemetery there were three one adult and two:.children. The Revenue Cutter Colfax came up the river yesterday morning and anchored off Market.dock, but departed for Smithville during the afternoon, with Col lector Canaday on board. The British brig 2&onomist Capt. Smith, was cleared from this port for London yesterday, by Messrs. Williams & Murchison, with 1 ,000 casks spirits turpen tine and 2,540 barrels of rosin. Rev. J. B. Taylor, who has been absent during the past week in attendance upon tbe openinc exercises of Wake Forest College, has returned and will fill his pulpit to-day, morning and evening. Prof. Agostini proposes to re main ben- if be can get the requisite num ber of t u.)ils to form a dancing class; and it wili be strange if Wilmington cannot sup port one good dancing school. Alexander Kershaw, the youth who was so badly cut on the leg at Messrs. Altaffer & Price's sush and blind factory, on the 19th ulu, has eo far recovered as to be out on the street on crutches. The only case for tbe Mayor's consideration yesterday morning was that of the little colored boy, already mentioned as being charged with throwing' rocks in the street, who was discharged with a repri mand and warning. Mr. Wescott, one the pilots, re- ports that he saw a dead body floating in the river Friday morning. This may be the body which was seen at the mouth of Alligator creek, to which reference was made a few days ago. Our sturdy rice field yoemanry evidently believe in the "shotrgun policy," and, judging from the steady boom that is heard, especially during the early part of the day, many a poor rice bird or fat one ia made to bite the mud. The last moonlight excursion of I the Beaaon, under the management of Prof. Agostini, will take place on tbe steamer Passport on Tuesday next, the 6th inst., and the next day-excursion, under tbe same auspices, will come off on Fridsy next. 1 An important meeting of Caro lina Lodge No. 484, Knights of Honor.will be held to-morrow evening, at 8 o'clock, at which time the delegates to tbe late ses sion of the Grand Lodge at Raleigh will make their report, and other matters of in terest will come up for consideration. A gentleman of this city sug gests that thanksgiving be rendered in all our churches to-day for our wonderful preservation from the destructive effects of the late storm which swept our coast and resulted in so much damage to property and loss of life. Messrs. M. F. Manning and H. C. Depew, who have been spending a por tion of the summer at Capt. . W. Man ning's place, on Wrightsville Sound, will leave for tbe North on Tuesday next.where they are to rejoin Matin's Opera Troupe, with which they are connected. Accused or Rlnrder. A "postal" from Deputy Sheriff Mclver, of Robeson county, informs the Sheriff of New Hanover that one Lucieu Simpson is in jail in Lumbertpn on the charge of mur dering a woman in 'this county some time ago, and requesting the "Sheriff to' inquire into the facts at once, and advise the Sher iff of Robeson of the result, as Simpson may soon be released on the charges there. The authorities here have heard of bo such murder having been committed, and their 1 Inquiries have failed to elicit any informs tion on the subject. Indieatloaa. Personal and Educational Five young gentlemen of this city Messrs. E. A. Alderman, W. Ii. Morrison, Horton Freeman, Poindexter Taylor and James D. Jones left on Monday night last for Louisville, Kentucky, where be goes to enter tbe Southern Baptist Theolo gical Seminary. Robbery of a Flat Some thief broke into the cabin of Capt. Pound's flat, lying at Henry Turoci'a wood wharf, near tbe foot of Matket street, some time doling Friday night, and stole a pair of shoes, a quantity of clothing and other articles.
