LBy Telegraph to the Morning Star. New York, Sept. 7. At a meeting of the Democratic State Executive Committee to-day, Mr. Purcell, of Clinton, offered the following resolution: Resolved, That the people's right to be represented in the Executive office of the United Slates, by a Chief Magistrate of their own choice, has now again been imperilled. This right of the people in the representa tive ia a fundamental republican principle of self-government. Whether this right be imperilled, as in 1876, by a conspiracy of force and fraud among the office holders of the party in power, aiming to nullify the people's verdict, or as now by the bullet of an assassin, whatever bis motive, that purpose should awaken in every patriotic heart not only the respectful sympathy of freemen with the victim of such an atrocity, but also that political vigilance which is the cost of maintaining the safeguard of civil liberty. The resolution was adopted by a rising vote. W. E. Smith offered tho following reso lution, which was unanimously adopted by a standing vote: The members of the Democratic Slate Committee, at their first meeting since the attack upon the President of the United States, take occasion to record their Indig nation and horror at the infamous deed, and to express their heartfelt sympathy with the distinguished sufferer, and hie stricken family in their affliction, with the earnest hope that the labors of love and science for . the restoration of the Chief Magistrate to health and to the full exercise ol-lhe constitutional functions of his office, may be soon crqwned with cpmplete suc cess. Governor Cornell having appointed to morrow as a day of prayer for the Presi dent, the day becomes a legal holiday, to be observed similar to Saaday. Mayor Howell, of Brooklyn, also issued a procla mation calling on tbe business people to close their places of business to-morrow. Looisian . ARREST OF A SWINDLING AGENT. '" This seems to have been tbe case as regards .the general public and official cucles. and also as re gards Berlin. A communication from Berlin accounts for this by attributing the meeting to a 6udden resolution of the' Czar, , and says the meeting has been brought about bv tbe presence of Emperor William at the cavalry ' maicsuvres at Kooilz The ' Czar longed to greet the Emperor William per sonally, as be had not seen him since bis accession to the throne.' Those- who, look at tbe brighter side of things see in tbe face of this fact a personal contact .with Eu rope taking place through the uerman Jlim peror, and of the initiative of the meeting having been takee by the Czar as. a sign that, in spite of tbe current rumor prey lent at St. Petersburg, there is a leaning to old traditions, and that that has lately be come so strong its action is beginning to be felt beyond the limits of Russia. The limes, in an editorial article, says "No new wars, nor alliances, nor fresh de parture8 in policy, are to be expected from the meeting of the Emperors. Tho exist ing state of things will be reaffirmed, and Europe, after the interview, will be pretty near where she was before it." Albert Grevy's resignation of the Governorship The Algerian deputies vainly urged a post ponement of the decrees, which bsd been condemned beforehand at the election io Algeria." MICHIGAN. THE LONG CONTINUED DROUGHT FOL LOWED BY DESTRUCTIVE FISSS HUNDREDS OF FARMS SEDUCED TO ASHES LOSS OF LIFE REPORTED. By Telegraph to tbe Morning Star. Detroit. Siplemoer 7. Keports are beginning to arrive from the northern and northeastern portions of the State showing a terrible condition of affairs. The long- continued drought has rendered everything as dry as tinder, and the numerous flush' ings, or partly cleared tracts of land, cov ered with brush, decayed timber and other inflammable material, afford the best pos sible medium for a rapid spread of the flames, carried by the high winds which have been prevailing. Sinilace and Huron counties are scenes of the greatest deatruc tidh, which is growing positively appalling in character. Hundreds or farms have al ready been reduced to ashes. Stock, crops. barns, butldicgs and fences have ail been swept awsy. Men, women and children have been overtaken by the flimev&ud several lives are known to have been lost Ii is feaied that when full accounts have been received the loss of life will be terri ble. The little hamlets of Richmond, An derson and Charleston, in Haailace county, are all represented to have beea wiped out. The people are flocking to the shores of Lake Huron from the interior of these coun ties, as ihe only refuge from the devouring names, oome or them were overtaken by the spreading fire, and not less than twenty deaths are already reported; but it is hoped that these statements may prove incorrect. In Tuscola county, in the next tier of coun ties back from Like Huron and south of Saginaw, fires aie also raging but with somewhat less severity. The losses are overshadowed by the more terrible condit tion of things in the adjoining counties. The same stale cf affairs exists in Lapeer county, and the whole country around Saginaw and Bay City is ablaza from the marines tasing tire. Keports of many losses to farmers are beginning to reach here. THE INDIAN, LATEST ADVICES FEOM APACHE MA RAUDERS STILL RAVAGING THE COUNTRY MOVEMENTS OF TEOOPS. IBy Telegraph to the Maraing Star.
