He bore a good name and had 'many friends in the little Elm City. Gen. Joseph jC. Abbott until very recently editor of thePo of this city, departed this life yesterday. He too, was a man of Northern birth and ,.was 55 years of age. His health had been failing for some months. .Our acquaintance with him was. pleasant and he ap peared to us to be a man of amiabili ty and good breeding. He was far better cultivated than ; most people supposed and had , good taste. We do not undertake any sketch of his career, but merely wish to emphasize our sincere regret at his death. A committee of Democratic and Repiiblican Senators, consisting of five from each party, met to consult as to the organization of the Senate. The Wilmington Stab comes to us in a new dress on the anniversary of the fourteenth year of its existence. The Stab is the best conducted daily in North Carolina, and will compare favotablv with anv in this country. We believe that it is the only daily paper at present in North Carolina that pays more than expenses, and we might truthfully add that it is the only daily published in this State since the war that has run success fully for so long a time without making its proprietor as poor as a church mouse. To the gentlemen conducting the Stab, some of whom we served under several years, we hope they may live long and always be able to give to the readers of our State a first-class daily newspaper. nkw ad v ektisements. Ambler, rector of St. Paul's church, in this city, yesterday at about 12.30 o'clock, after somewhat protracted illness. Deceased was born in Concord, New Hampshire, about 1826. He was for a long time editor of a paper at' Manchester, New Hampshire, and was at one time connected with the press in Bos ton. Prior to the war he was Adjutant General of his native State. At the break ing out of the war he raised a regiment of New Hampshire infantry, of which he was made Lieut. Colonel, having declined the Colonelcy in favor of an officer of the regular army. On the death of Col. Put nam, the officer alluded to, who was killed at Fort Wagner. Abbott came here with the Federal troops in 1865 and soon afterwards engaged in the saw mill business at Abbottsburg, Bladen county, establishing with others what was known as the Cape Fear Building Works, which he finally abandoned some years since. He was a member of the Con stitutional Convention of this State in 1868, and was elected United Suites Senator from North Carolina the same year,-serving: nearly three years. Latterly Gen.
