Seward, afterwards the great Hia;h Priest of the Republican party, said of the President pro tern. of the Senate: "There can be but one person at any time holding the office of President pro tempore, and that person must hold it until it has been made constitutionally vacant." By telegraph we leanv that Wil son, in an interview with the city editor of the Lynchburg News, de nies most emphatically the statements made in the Richmond Whig relative to himself. He says the Blair letters are genuine and no mistake. We draw attention to this here because on our second page we refer to what purported to be a statement made by him denying the genuineness, fcc. The intelligent and ordinarily well informed New York correspon dent of the Philadelphia Ledger, Independent Republican, says im phatically that up to Sunday last Conkling was put down for the Secre tary of State's place on Arthur's slate. He -writes: "It is understood now that the visit of the Vtiea statesman to Washington on that day was to effect a modification of the situa tion, and it has been modified accordingly. Conkling will be one of the President's constitutional advisers, but net now,- The pear is not ripe for the plucking, nor will it be until after the November electioto. There is much rejoicing in consequence in the Custom House, because, with Conklin? in the Treasury, it is believed that there would have been short work with Mr. Robertson and his friends there. As it is, they have a further respite. Meanwhile, the venerable- ex-Governor 3&rgan ' comes to the front again as a proper man for the Treasury Department. Wall street and Exchange places are warmly supporting him, and, it is believed that the ex-Governor is perfectly willing to aceept; but the President does not see his way very clearly as yet to the propriety of his appointment until Post master James retires."
