Papers are contrasting Daniel Webster's and Blaine's State papers and to the damage of the latter. But wharSecretary of State ever wrote such papers as "the great Western ?" The Independents in Philadelphia have been holding a conference as to the advisability of placing a Guber natorial candidate in the field. They resolved to await the action of the old parties. . Iiss Genevieve Ward is the great granddaughter of William C. C. Claiborne, who wa& appointed Governor-General of Louisiana by Jeffer son in 1803.- He is mentioned in that tine work of Cable's genius "The Grandissinies." So the gifted artiste is of Virginia extraction. Her birthplace is unknown to us. The editor of the Wilson Advance is an excellent and experienced law yer, as well as a gentleman of gen eral information. He says that if the reapportionment of members of the House takes place the Governor must call the .Legislature in extra session. An able Republican lawyer ff this city holds the same opinion. Mr. Samuel F. Phillips, of Wash ington City, District of Columbia, is anxious to be TJ. S. District Judge of Eistern North Carolina. We prefer one of our own citizens, and we hope the choice will fall in that direction. Mr. Sammy is far too baniptious and dignified for a Judgeship. Common mortals would bepetrified under the glare of his stony eyes. The South is bad off. Failures are the order of the day. In seven days there have been 14 failures more than 10 a day. It looks as if the bottom was about to fall out. In the end it may do goo'd. Men with out capital will go to the wall and men without honor will be found out, and the solvent, reliable houses will have less opposition. Bnt it is a very unsatisfactory and unhealthy financial sign to see the South lead ing all other sections in the number of its commercial bankruptcies. THE OITT. new advertisements. We Neyxr Sleep. A Human Curiosity, There has been on our streets, for several days past, a remarkable specimen of human ity, and one that has attracted' a -great deal of attention. We refer 'to one Franklin Price Powell, a colored man, bora in Co lumbus county, aged about 24 years, and raised by;Mr. Calvin PowelL He has nei ther feet nor hands, the arms terminating at the wrist with a blunt stub. The right leg just below the knee turns, and there is a for mation of gristle to represent a foot. The left leg has only a small knob below the knee. Otherwise, this curious specimen is splendidly formed, and has a bright and pleasant . face. ; He works on a jfarm and is represented to be well to do. He can do any kind of work, drive or ride horses, dance and get about as lively, ap parently,,: as if he , was perfectly formed. He can even thread a needle, sew on a but ton, mend harness, and, in short, do any thing, and do it with ease. ' He is, in fact, a fit 'subject for Barnum. : Eadowmeat Bank Kt f P - The newly elected officers of the Endow ment Rank Kof P. were duly installed by Ma '3 King the retiring President, on Friday night. Mr. Mahone was elected a Senator from Virginia 'by a Democratic Legislature, and, after voting with the Re publicans in the organization 01 the oenate, organized ya campaign in :Virgmia:on the question' of I readjusting the : State debt,: which resulted in. the defeat of the Demo-, cratic party in that State.. There are but two parties in the country.' the Republican anor tne Democratic parties. ? wnue 1 believe, that in the. contest in Virginia there was rOonvfor. argument, and while I know that the Governor-elect is a gentle man of remarkable talents, of unblemished character and r unquestioned, courage, it would be trifline:to denv that the victorv was a itepuDiican triumph. To oe "the Mahone of North Carolina,"' therefore, is, as I understand it, to be' the organizer and leader of a movement by which- the State is to oe turned . over to the .Republican party; and the question put to me, there fore, is whether I propose to do this thing. What have I ever said or done since lentered public life to justify such an inquiry ? I once had a proposition made to me, when the Republican party was omnipotent in this State, to accept the highest office in its gift, and declined it: I subsequently took & nomination from the Democratic patty when its banner Was in the dust, and when, in this district;5 here ' was "none so poor to do it reverence,! and r for eight years carried that banner to victory by ever- I J - Ji; . .T . AWA . , . increasing majorities, xn 1010 tue repre sentation from this district was transferred, by no fault of mine, to other hands, and since then, excepting five months of hard work for Hancock, in 1880, I have been a very private citizen, tryine to make an honest living, r. Now, the occupiers of the anxious bench are exercised about the new deal, and "feelers" are put Jout in the news papers to ascertain the position of others. As far as I am concerned they need not be disturbed. I have been told that I am too can did for a politician. The: charge may be true. At any rate I will run the risk of justifying it by saying that I have fre quently criticized the management of the Democratic party, and will probably do it again; but that when I want to sever my connection with it I will do it like a man, and not under false pretences. I believe that the best interests 01 the people of North Carolina will be served by the reten tion of that party in power, and when I change this opinion the first knowledge the people will have of it will come from me, and not from anonymous newspaper correspon dents. Leonard Chaney, who preaches at Tileston Upper Room this, afternoon, as will be seen by the notice in our Church directory, was one of the first among Northern people to interest himself in edu cation in Wilmington after the war; and, after visiting here some years ago, he re turned to Boston, where he preached a ser mon which awoke new interest in the cause; and culminated in the building of the Tileston Normal . School House. He is, we understand, asenthusiastic as ever, and would like o see all interested in the school, and also all who feel inclined, to come to themeeting tolay. ' An Extended Popularity. Thgt is a sad case of abduction of Mr. L. Cartwright and wife, living near Whiteville, Columbus county, who had their little daughter taken from them the latter part of December last. It seems a man by the name of Wheeler had been at work for Mr. Cart- wright, who had taken the man in more out of charity that anything else, and a day or so before Christmas the man suddenly dis appeared, and with him the little child, nei ther of whom have since been heard from. As soon as the child was missed Mr. Cart- wright started out to look for it and its ab ductor, armed with a shotgun. He visited this city and numerous other points, also traversing the swamps which are between here and Whiteville, but has never been able to come up with the miss ing couple, and in the i meantime he has reached a state bordering on distraction, and his poor wife said to have partially lost her mind from brooding over her trouble. The little trirl answers to the name of Mattie, is little over 10 years old, and has long, dark "hair and a some what red face. Her abductor is about 21 years of age and has his name tatooed on his arm, together with various devices. American Ieclon of Honor. At the last regular meeting of Clarendon Council No. 67. A.
