Death resulted ?t about five min uted. - , '' Special,di8patch to the Jndex Appeal J&vp&fy 13 : Joe May, Matilda Car ter and Eldridge Scales, all colored, were hanged at Wentworth to-day, for the mur der of Nash Carter, the husband of Matilda. The three doomed prisoners were carried to the scaffold from the jail sitting on their coffins, dressed in their shrouds. The ex ecution was witnessed by a large crowd of people. All ot the prisoners made speeches, in which they confessed their guilt. The woman shouted all along the route from the jail. , On making her final address to the crowd from the scaffold, she laughed in alluding to how she - had deceived her husband. : Beaufort Iblephciae; Collector A. C. Davis has received from Consular Agent at Newport, Wales, certified, invoice of another cargo of steel railroad bars (1,000 tons) dipped December 23d, 1881, for Moiehead City. The vessel containing this cargo, if she arrives safely, will be the largest foreign vessel ever entered at this port. Friday last Mr. J., A.. Sprhjgle met with an incident which came near proving fatal. He was conversing with several vea orr the wharf of Mr. Thomas, and, turning to walk away, he made a mis step and fell through between the wharves of Mr. Thomas and Mr. Dill. His- head struck against the side of the wall, which was covered with jroung oysters, the shells of which were as keen as razors and cut his bead in a shocking manner, as well as his hand and arm, which was instinctively thrown out for protection. The blood flowed in quantities, and he was picked up from the water unconscious and supposed to be dead, but regained consciousness, and at last accounts was pronounced out of danger. Raleigh News- Observer: The to tal receipts of cotton here since September 1st, when the season opened, are 43,205 bales, against 55,135 bales up to this date last season.
