Dr. Mavo thinks' the Golds horo graded school of remarkable ex cellence. He has never known a school in the North to make so much progress in ithe same length of time onlv five months. Gen. Wyatt M. Elliott, President of the Virginia Senate, resigned lie cause of some reflection upon hi in in a resolution that was passed. He was reelected unanimously, but he refused the office from a sense of proper self-respect. , We said recently that it was not improbable that the Greek plays would be acted often on the modern stage. We notice that the "Anti gone" of Sophocles is to be produced next March by the students of Uni versity College,- Toronto, Canada. Austria has forbidden newspaper correspondents to tell anything about the movements of troops, etc. The New York Sun says : The result will probably be that other countries will receive and publish the news of the war, and the Austrians, who are most interested in it, will know little or nothing except, what the Govern ment allows." In Minnesota fifteen highly re spectable citizens have been stricken down from eating raw ham. They had what is known as trichinal spira lis. An entire family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Cushner, their sons, William, aged 22; Nicholas, aged 14; Jacob, aged 12, and a daughter, An nie, aged 18, were poisoned Mr. Cushner fatally, dying on Thursday. Fritz Preggcr and Jacob Wilfart have died from the same cause. All the others are at the point of death or in a precarious condition. Guiteau, in his appeals to the pub lic, asks for money to help him be fore the Court, and he appeals to the ladies especially. Towards the close he says, in his usual blasphemous style: "I am God's man in this matter just as truly as the despised Gallilean was God's man. They said he was a blasphemer, and a glutton, etc., and it seemed a small thing tor his acquaintances to kill him; but bis death stirred the wrath of the Almighty and he got even with them forty years later at the destruction of Jerusalem, A. Under the law I cannot be executed in any event until July. I may die a dozen times before then, so-1 have no trouble about that. I shall not go before my time. My friends need not be ashamed of me. Some people think I am the greatest man f this age, and that my name will go into history as a patriot by the side of Wash ngton and Grant." i Col. Wm. Johnston, of 'Charlotte, has published a card in the Southern I -r.-r -.T,rx r j VOTi XX-TtC 'Nl JKfO. I JX.Jm V. Homey in which he goes for all pa pers that criticized him, and says "They, state that I sought office of the President: that I said 'we desire to see the Democracy of North Carolina defeated at the next election ; : and that I had 'joined the Radical camp,' &c I pronounce these and all such statements utterly false. Such chanres are unworthv of notice to those who Know me, but others maybe misled by my silence Now this looks as if he were still a Democrat and not a Radical. But is he? "What does he mean by the following? "If a private citizen, who is neither a candidate or aspirant for office, is to be de nounced as unpopular, dishonest and a traitor lor exercising independence ot thought and action, such party will soon disintegrate. And if with the unfortunate legislation and management in both State and .Federal politics there is not some im provement, the party will disband itself, and reorganize under the banner of econo my, retrenchment, reform, and popular rights." The news from Washington from both sides told the same story con corning Mr. Price. We await fur ther developments. If he chooses to work with the Democrats then the better for him. If he undertakes to play the part of Mahone on a swell scale he will be criticized and cen sured bv his former allies. Mayo, of Boston, Massachu setts, will deliver a lecture this (Sunday) evening, at 8 o'clock, in Christ church (Congregational) on "The Education of the Heart." Mr. Mayo will deliver two additional lectures in Memorial Hall, on evenings du ring the week, on "The Education of the Head" and "The Education of the Hand." Notice will be given of these lectures, which will be free to all. Dr. Mayo has been lecturing in the South for the greater part of the past two years, and bears references from the best sources, including the President; Commis sioner Eaton, of the 'National Bureau of Education ; Rev. Dr. Ruffner, of the De partment of Public Instruction, of Vir ginia ; J. P. Wickcrsham, Superintendent of Public Instruction, of Pennsylvania ; Thomas B. Stockwell, Commissioner of Public Schools, of Rhode Island ; M. A. Newell, Superintendent of Public Instruc tion, of Maryland, etc. He has been lecturing in Raleigh to fine houses and with much acceptability once before the people when the Governor of the State presided and is evidently accomplishing much good in the cause .of education in iSe South. He has achieved a high reputation as a lecturer on educational topics, and it is said that on the platform he is never dry or dull, his style being, in fact, remarkable for its vi vacity. The Rev. gentleman has been in the State but about two weeks, lecturing only at Raleigh and Greensboro, and yet he has received enough letters to keep him em ployed until summer, which shows a very encouraging state of feeling among the people in reference to the important sub ject which is engaging his attention and efforts, In this connection we would state that Dr. Mayo will also be pleased to deliver a lecture before the people if arrangements can be made to that effect, and to this end invites the co-operation of the public. A private letter from Durham says it sleeted there on Friday. Here the weather was like spring. 1 - We are glad to learn that Judge French rested well Friday night and that his condition is still encouraging. A baptizing will take place this afternoon, at half-past 4 o'clock, at the foot of Princess street, conducted by Rev. A. M. Conway. Mr. N. Jacobi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the State, instituted a Coun cil of the Legion of Honor at Bladnboro during the past week. Chief of Police Brock and the Health officers of the city are emphatic in the avowal that there is not nor has there been this season a case of small-pox in the city. Rev. J. B. Taylor, who has been in attendance for two days past at the Masonboro meeting, has returned to the city, and will occupy his pulpit as usual to day. ' Rev. A. D. "Mayo will preach at Tileston Upper Room this evening at 3 o'clock. The public are invited. Mr. Mayo visited this city last winter, as many will remember. Thanks for a ticket, with the compliments of Mr. C. T. Willis, Proprie tor, to the grand opening of Willis Mamona Opera House, Wilson, N. C, Feb. 2nd and 3rd, to wind up with a grand ball on the night of Friday, the 3rd. The Register of Deeds did not issue a single marriage license, to white or colored, during the past week. There is always a calm after a storm, but this is a case of total suspension not a breath to cause so much as a ripple upon the sea of matrimony. A "postal" from Gen. Manning, en route for Maine, announces the death of his wife's father, Hon. Timothy Walker, at Rumford, in that State, and that his inter ment would take place yesterday. The General was doubtful as to his ability to get there in time to be present at the cere monies. "Frean, tne American.' Mr. John T. Raymond will appear at the Opera House to-morow (Monday) evening in Gunter's new play of "Fresh, the Amer ican," supported, it is claimed, by an ex cellent company. The Charleston Jeic and Courier of Friday says: "The play is described as a fantastic comedy, and it deserves the name, but its manifold absurdities are very diverting ana serve to set off effectively Mr. Raymond's personation of the eccentric American who fills the central role. "The quality of Mr. Raymond's humor is well known to Charleston play-goers, It is quiet and unforced, with a simplicity which is the perfection of the art, and is full of delicate touches and subtle hints. He has evidently made a careful study of this new part, and he plays it with his accustomed fidelity, and with that restraint which is one of the best features of his dramatic method. But the part itself lacks the hu manity which distinguishes his Colonel Sel lers and which gives to that remarkable personation its curious attractiveness. Mr. Fresh is funny but he is not suggestive; his humor lacks that hint of pathos which the highest humor always holds, and the lines upon which the 'character are drawn are narrower than those in which Mr. Ray mond's genius is wont to move, yet he makes the part intensely amusing. "The house last night was crowded, and the applause was uproarious. The dresses of the ladies in the harem scene are very gorgeous, and altogether the play was well presented." - A New Contrivance for Supplying Ves sels wltn Water. The latest improvement in connection with our harbor facilities, and one which will doubtless prove a great convenience to the shipping, is in the shape of what is known as a water boat, constructed for the purpose of supplying vessels with pure water at a trifling cost, to take with them on their voyaf ;es. This is an institution which has for some time been in vogue at all the larger commercial cities, but has never been introduced here until now. The one in question, which we examined yesterday, was built for the New York Water Com pany ana purchased from them by Messrs. Hanson & Co., of this city. It is built of oak and has a tank inside with a capacity of one thousand eight hundred gallons. A filter will be located on the wharf near their place, with a pipe leading into the tank, by which a sjupply of pure water will be constantly ready for vessels desiring the same, relieving them of the necessity of ob taining their water direct from the river, with its immediate impurities, as heretofore, mayor's Covrt. Frank Baker and Jordan Baker, two young colored men, who were arrested Friday night on suspicion, the former hav ing a bag of cotton in -his possession, were arraigned before Mayor Smith yesterday morning. They declared that the cotton bad been picked up at intervals during the past two or three weefcs, where it was blowing about the streets, and as there was no one to make claim" to it. and no evidence that the cotton was stolen, the parties were discharged, though; subject to rearrest if fntur'deve1opment$ .should warrant such action. In the meantime the bag of cotton is held at the CUy all tQ await results..; ' The steamship ' Regulator, hence, ar rived at New York yesterday. A Case of Wlfe-BeatlnKpn Shipboard James Bland, a colored seaman, belong ingon the brigantine NeTHe Busted, from Martinique, which put m here some weeks ago in distress, loaded with logwood, was arrested by the police, yesterday morning, on the complaint of his wife-, charged with beating her. Mayor Smith was notified and had the case brought before him at once. Bland is nearly black, while his wife is a mulatto, and both talk in broken , Eng lish not easily understood, The latter, a woman of rather mall stature and quite young, came into court with her- face con siderably disfigured and swollen. Sh gave in her testimony, detailing the circum stances of the difficulty which led to her re ceiying the unlucky blow from her husband, and then defendant took the stand. He sup plemented his oath and the kissing of the good book by assuming a, tragic attitude and calling upon heaven to witness that what he should say would be the truth. He then, in his broken way attempted to jus tify his action, accusing his wife of having a quick temper, which, he said, was usual ly the cause of their misunderstandings. etc. The Mayor finally said something about sending the defendant jto jail, when the wife set in to begging that no such pun ishment should be inflicted upon her dusky adorer, who, she said was the "very essence of politeness," etc. His Honor then re marked that it was but the old story : the husband, with brute force, inflicts punish ment upon his frail and delicate wife, and she in turn pleads for mercy upon her re creant lord. However, as thej' were strangers in the place, and she had no one to look after her, he would suspend judg ment in his case upon the payment of costs, with the understanding that if the offense should be repeated, or he should hear of any more trouble between them, the penalty in such cases made and provided should be enforced. The difficulty occurred on fbard the ves sel above alluded to. Unaaallable Hatter. The following is the unmauable matter remaining in the city pottofBce : Miss Alice M. Roberson, Monroe, N.
