The Richmond State and the IV-W'iYTt(le.c-Ajypral are raising funds to aid the sufferers by the Mid lothian mine explosion. This is very creditable. Petersburg will contrib ute probably 1,1)00 and Richmond much morr. The Internal Revenue reformers are becoming perplexed. Tee pro tectionists are watching them. "Bildad'' writes the State as follows: There is no doubt that some of the reve nue reformers are placed in an einbar raising situation. The question is, "How far can thev safely go with the protection ists in reducing internal taxes without in juriously affecting the prospects of tariff revision?" Here is a bit of theatrical criticism i'rom the New Orleans Picatniie: ""This play, by the way, is one of the most satisfying ou the stage. After seeing if once no one wants to see it again." We would like to know if the Pic- 'iynn- had any reference to "The Double Marriage" as played by the Kate Claxton troupe? John T. Raymond came near losing his life in Washington by an ava lanche ' snow and ice together with ome eorniee work, that fell upon him. Ho was buried completely. He was released in an unconscious condition and removed to a neighboring drug store, where he was attended by a physician. Ke received a'nnmber of severe bruises and two severe scalp wounds, from which, he lost a good deal of blood. He is already at work again, however. We do not read such paragraphs as the following with any peculiar satisfaction. It does not show weli for a portion of our people. The Washington special in Baltimore S'? says: "In the short space of four years in the sixth North Carolina internal revenue col lection district 1,107 distilleries and six to liacco factories were seized for violation of the law. There were probably more than this number of illicit distilleries which the government officers failed to break up. This ."ill give an idea of the magnitude of the business of illicit distilling in the moun 'ainous regions of North Carolina." Senator Vance says the informa i ion furnished by the Secretary of the Treasury as to the alleged irreg ularities in the. Sixth Revenue Dis 'riet in this State does not amount to much. The Richmond DUpateh' 5mor from Washington says; "The information sought will be obtain en from other sources, Xorth Carolina . . . i -i. i i : i , .. . f the City, Fwtkks CkN-rs per week. We learn that a dozen or more of Past Chancellors are ex pected to be present from Fayetteville and a much larger number from this city. In answer to any number of in quiries propounded yesterday, we would state that the noise Friday night, a little before 11 o'clock, which was thought by many to have been caused by the explosion of a boiler or some such accident, resulted from a discharge of a battery in the City Hall park which shonld have, been used in the performance at the theatpp, but i ailed to "go off." The Norfolk Virginian gives the follow ing flattering notice of Adams' Humpty Dumpty troupe, under Mr. Adam Fore paugh's management, which is to appear here to-morrow night: Geo. II. Adams and his new Humpty Dumpty troupe appeared at the Academy of Music last night, before quite a large audience, and the evening was one of real enjoyment to all present. Adams is a whole team in himself, and is the best clown on the stage. The company altogether de serves all that has been said of it, and gave a better performance of the kind than has ever before been witnessed in Norfolk. Nearly everything was new, which was one great advantage the performance possessed. The first act was greeted with great ap plause. In the second act the specialties were introduced, which were highly pleas ! ing. such as the "Mysteries of Dreamland," the chimes, the automatons, the great Praeger family, with their Tyrolean songs and inimitable "cat duet," the wonderful Martinettis, the ventriloquist and the edu cated dogs Act third closed with a bril liant anefbCTiutiful tableau. Released from Durance Vile. Grayson Jenkins, colored, who has been in jail for the last fourteen months, was re leased yesterday upon his own recogni zance, while awaiting a new trial granted him by the Supreme Court, to which he had appealed. The witnesses, it seems, have scattered since the first hearing of the case and conviction of the defendant, who was tried for complicity in the larceny of certain cotton. Jenkins was evidently glad to breathe the pure air of liberty once more after his long incarceration. Alarm of Fire. The roof of a house on the east side of Fifth, between Queen and Wooster streets, the property of Mr. A. B. Cook, caught fire yesterday morning, about 100.30 o'clock, and, in response to the alarm, the fire de partment turned out and hurried to the scone, but found their services unnecessary the fire being quickly extinguished by the neighbors ; the only damage being a hole of not very large proportions in the roof. Mortuary. There were three interments in Oakdale Cemetery during the week closing yester day, of which one was an adult and two children, one being a still-born infant. Bellevue Cemetery reports one interment an adult for the week. In Pine Forest (colored) Cemetery there were three interments all. adults during the week. Unmallable matter. WINSLOWS SOOTHING SYRUP.-liev Sylvanus Cobb thus writes the " Boston Christian Freeman M : We would by no means recommend any kind of medicine which we did not know to be good particularly for infants. But of Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup we cau speak from knowledge ; in our own family it has proved a blessing indeed, by giving an infant troubled with colic pains, quiet sleep, and its parents unbroken rest at night. Most parents can appreciate these blessings. Here is an article which works to per fection, and which is harmless ; for the sleep njiu iijd uuuc vucruu awucs its unui. as a our ton." And during the process of teething its value is incalculable. BEING EXTENSIVE ADVERTI8ER8, WE ARE often interrogated as above, and. as often as asked, we answer emphatically, YES. No matter what your business may be, the judicious use of do, tne judicious use of pays handsomely. But, printer's ink Days, am a mina you, were are two ways to advert id y lse, viz.: one, the untruthful or blowing advertisement; the other the truthful or koneM advertisement. The use of the former class will never bring success to a dealer, for if a man uses his newspaper to practice deception, he'll be sure to sail under the same canvas behind bis counter, and the people will eventually find it out, and nis business can never Drosner. By no truant adeertUe untruth fully. A lie looks hideous in print. For example, a sausage maker should never advertise bis sau sage as all pork, when with his own hands he but chered the old coio that formed the greater por tion oi tne composition, ne may deceive ms pa trons once, and pnly once, for them cow-pork sau sages will effectually kill his trade deader than the old cow herself (Don't misrepresent any thing vou desire to sell.) If you wish success to crown your efforts, use printer's ink and energy combined; then oouplo these with honesty and fair dealinr: then, with a thorough knowledge of your business you are 1 sure to succeed.
