Francis Harte, the eldest son of Bret Harte, the author, is about to enter the dramatic profession. Judge Cox, whose impeachment trial is pending at St. Paul for drunken ness, has very much prejudiced his case by going on a two days' spree. . The Very Reverend Henry Ward Beecher began his sermon last Sun day by saying: "When I was in Paris, I went to hell." Henry Ward is nothing if not sensational. Mrs. Garfield is expected to at tend a service in memory of her husband, to be held in Chicago on the 27th. She is now visiting friends in Rochester, with her young daughter. The assassin of Garfield pro poses to republish his book, "The Truth." If he doesn't look sharp, the latter days of June will catch him with his work of re vision incomplete. Princess Jeanne Bonaparte, daughter of the rowdy Pierre, looks like her uncle, the great Napoleon and yet she is said to be a sensible, modest girl. She is shortly to marry a cadet of one of the oldest Proyencal families. LITERARY 7? OSSIP. Frederick Douglass' autobiogra phy will be reprinted in England. The second part of Leopold von Rauke's "Universal History" is just out. Like the first part, it has two volumes, which treat of the Roman Republic and its supremacy. Mr. Samuel Waddington has completed his survey of , the sonnets in Eng lish poetry by adding to his "English Son nets by Poets of the Past" a similar selec tion of sonnets by living writers. The third and concluding vol ume of the Rev. Dr. Hayman's edition of the "Odyssey," which will be published immediately " by Mr. Nutt, is dedicated to the Cambridge Philological Society, Eng land. Sir Thomas Brassey, member of Parliament, is preparing for publication, in six volumes, a work On "Recent Naval Ad ministration," the first and second of which, just out, treat of English and foreign ships of war, with illustrations by the Chevalier E. de Martino; the third will be devoted to naval and professional opinions on ship building for the purposes of war; the fourth and fifth to miscellaneous speeches and pa pers on naval subjects, and the sixth to the merchant service. T W INKLINGS. The Manchester Union asks : "Did any one ever hear of a German prize fighter ?" The value of the dairy product exceeds that of the wheat crop, being esti mated at about $600,000,000, and 8,000,000 of people are engaged in the industry. - The cereal product of the United States, according to the report of the bureau of agriculture, was 24 per cent, less in 1881 than it was in 1880, but the value of the crop was more than $100,000,000 greater. The London Lancet says that there is absolute unanimity among .medical men, whatever their other views on the drink question, that spirits, wine or beer should only be taken with food. The Italian Minister of Public Instruction intends to propose to Parlia ment the reconstruction of the Pantheon in its original form, and that it shall be des tined to contain the tombs of the Kings of Italy, jnt as the Basilica of Superga, in Turin, contains those of the Kings of Savoy. In the centre a statue of Victor Emanuel would be erected, the expense to be de frayed by a vote of five million francs. SOUTHERN ITEMS. Twenty-six persons by the same name joined one South Carolina company at the outbreak of the war, and not one lived to return home. Senator Joseph E. Brown, of Georgia, in an interview yesterday reite rated the opinion he had already expressed that he was in favor of a straight Demo cratic ticket in 18$4, and : that he Saw no reason for being other than a Democrat. The Vicksburg Herald thinks that there is not much likelihood of Gen. Hancock ever again receiving the Demo cratic nomination. The tariff question is now coming prominently to the front, and by the time of the next election will be one of the main issues, and his indefinite yjews on that great question would unfit him for a successful candidate. POLITICAL POINTS. ' Mr. Blaine continues to be the most famous, feared, alternately abused and admired man of the Republican party. Dallas Herald, Dem. Emory Storrs, Stalwart, speaks of the "foul, sneaking, lying, blustering, nasty hypocrisy" Of the Hayes administra tion. Nothing more peed to be said. -New Haven Beguter, Dem, Mr. Randall is so frank and positive in his avowal of convictions that he is claimed with equal confidence by pro hibitory protectionists and ral?id free traders. Washington National Republican. It cannot be said that St. Jacobs Oil, the Great German Remedy, is ever demonstra tive over a case of rheumatism; quietly he performs his mission, leaving the relieved one to tell of its result Mr. Carl Siegmund, coroner of Congress and Washington streets, Ypsilanti, Michigan, writes : "My daughter had suffered, from Rheumatism to such an extent that it crippled her, rendering her unable to walk at all.
