The total visible supply of cotton for the world is 2,784,038 bales, 1,763,995 of which are American ; crop of American in sight is 5,196,697 bales. A destructive fire broke out at 10 o'clock Friday night at Raciue, Wis. ; a fierce gale of wind was blowing; at 4 o'clock the next morning :ibout fifteen acres had been burned over; the wind had subsided and there were hopes of stopping the fire; engines were sent for to Chicago and Milwaukee. The House passed the Tariff Commission bill by a vote of 151 to 83. The Presi dent has issued an order relieving Gen. Fitz John Porter of so much of the court martial sentence as debarred him from holding office. Lord Frederick Ca vendish, the new Secretary for Ireland and Under Secretary Burke were shot dead in Phoenix Park, Dublin. New York markets: Money 23 per cent.; cotton tirmrwtlh holders asking higher prices, at 12J12ic; southern flour chill and un changecTat $5 758 50; wheat, ungraded red $1 181 54; corn opened c lower and closed weak, ungraded 76c ; rosin quiet and steady at $2 422 45; spirits turpen tine dull and lower at 5556c. It is reported that Minister Lowell has "Been recalled. The poor thing you call a navy has cost the people $72,345,778. The nasty Christiancy divorce case-rs still in court in Washington. Purity, a bay mare, sold in New York for 6,000. She can make 2.1 S. The finding of the bodies of Lieut. DeLong and ten of his men is con firmed. There is no truth m the report that the two Georgia Senators have resiir ncd. The Tariff Commission bill passed the House by a large majority. Vive la humbug! Of the tax on raw cotton paid the Government after the war, North Carolina paid $1,959,702. Jennie Cramer's mother testified on the 4th of May, and James Mal ley turned pale when she questioned him. Dillon says the Parnell party will stand firm, and he does not look for any benefit from the change of high officials. The fourth musical concert in New York was attended by 7,000 people. Malterna and Campanini scored the greatest success of all the singers. In Republican circles in Washing ton the bloody-shirt is handled about as often as they do the towels. In that sign they still hope to conquer. Mr. Forster, in his speech in the House of Commons on Thursday, said that if Parnell had not been arrested he would have become the uncrowned King of Ireland. Senator Vance was to have lec tured in Richmond Friday night. He was to be the guest of Judge Ould, and was to have a dinner given him bv Dr. Georp-e B. Johnston. "If Gladstone's new policy fails he has one avenue of safety left. He can call a conference, promise reforms in Ireland next year and offer Parnell a place on the ticket." Phil. Times. That is the Pennsylvanian Repub lican way of tiding over difficulties. The Cameron-Press kissing match is in point. "Pig-iron" Kelley,interrupted with a too long talk "Sunset" Cox who was making a capital anti-tariff com mission speech. The latter said: "The gentleman is trying to smug gle a speech into the middle of mine. Whenever tariffs are very high, smuggling is rife." The killing: of Lord Cavendish, who succeeded Mr. Forster, in Dub lin, will make bad worse. He was a Whiff, and was selected for the Irish Secretary's place because Mr. Glad stone was anxious to conciliate the Whigs, who had been supporting him but were disposed to fly off. Why he was killed" we have no in formation at this writing. Charlotte Observer : Wednes day evening last, about 4 o'clock, Mr. D. A. Wallace, of Concord, made an attempt to take his life by cutting his throat and he almost did the work. He was laboring under temporary mental disorder. The wound was sewed up by Dr. John L. The Republiean County Con vention will meet at the Court House in this city on Saturday, the 27th of May. The Register of Deeds issued 2 marriage licenses during the past week, one to a white anemone to a colored couple. Mr. C. R. Kearns, of Virginia, Southern correspondent of the Railicag Re view, of Chicago, is registered at the Pur cell House. The only case before the Mayor yesterday morning was that of the notori ous Dave Mallett, for drunkenncss,Hho was sent below for ten days. Messrs. Geo. M. Crapon and Thos. E. Pickett will open a wholesale and retail grocery store in the Tiencken build ing, on Front street, about the 15th inst. In the way of news of a cheer ful nature, it is stated that the somewhat noted Mary Eliza Lively has skipped into our midst again, after an absence of some months. J. H. The Nor. barque A. O. Vinje, Capt. Larsen, was cleared from this port for Stettin, Germany, yesterday, by Messrs. E. Peschau & Westermann, with 3,080 bar rels of rosin, valued at $6,600. The receipts of cotton at this port from May 1st to May 6th footed up J 723 bales, as against 203 bales for seven days from May 1st, 1881, showing an in crease in favor of 1882 of 520 bales. The new brick fence, about cempleted around the First Presbyterian Church, is a decided improvement on the old wooden enclosure, and more in accord ance with the eternal fitness of things. It lends a much improved appearance to the handsomeJbrick and atone structure, and is artistic in finish and workmanship. Violations of Revenue Laws, Deputy Lt. S. Marshal T. E. Phillips left for Fayetteville yesterday, on the steamer D. Murchison, having in his cus tody Messrs. Jas. Godwin, Blackman God win and George Godwin, convicted at the late term of the U. S. District Court of vio lating the Internal Revenue laws, who are to be released on the payment of costs or giving bond for their appearance at the next term of the Court. It is not thought that they will have any difficulty in finding the necessary bond. Bobbed of Money and a Pistol. A young man from Cumberland county, who brought down a raft of tar, laid him self down and went to sleep on the raft Friday night, and some time during the night some sly rogue went aboard and rifled his pockets of $9. 50 in money and a pistol, leaving in the place of it a postal card with the name of A. C. Armstrong on it, which was evidently intended as a blind. He has no clue to the thief. MEMORIAL DAY. Programme for Celebration May 10 tit. Ministers of the different churches are requested to have their bells tolled from 3.30 to 4 o'clock. The route will be up Fourth street to Campbell ; up Campbell to the Cemetery. As the head of the procession reaches Campbell street, the Cape Fear Light Ar tillery will begin to fire a salute of thirty six guns from the hill overlooking the Cemetery. At the close of the ceremonies a salute will be fired by the Wilmington Light Infantry. The Memorial services will be opened with a dirge by the Cornet Concert Club. Prayer by the Rev. T. Page Ricaud. Dirge by the Band. Memorial Ode by the Choir. Oration by C. B. Denson No Booths or Stands will be Allowed. The Ladies' Memorial Association request us to state that they hope that no booths or stands for the sale of ale, beer and other such articles will be permitted near the Cemetery grounds on Memorial Day, as such traffic tends to promote confusion and is entirely inappropriate to such an occa sion. In this connection it may not be amiss to say that they have the assurance of the owners of property adjacent that they will not give any permit or sanction any such use of their lots on that day. The street leading to the Cemetery has never been formally opened or condemned, and is therefore private property, and the unsanctioued use of it would be a punisha ble trespass. Magistrates' Court. Elsie Moore, colored, was arraigned be fore Justice Gardner for assault and bat tery upon Richard Brown, 11 years old, a son of Peggy Ann Merrick, and was order ed to pay one penny and the cost. Wm. Jones had a hearing before Justice Millis on the charge of committing assault and battery upon Fred. Hamilton. Case dismissed on the payment of costs. Fred. Hamilton was then called tip for assault and battery upon Wm. Jones, and the same judgment was rendered. Bar Association. The Bar Association met yesterday af ternoon, at 4 o'clock, with Judge Meares in the chair, and adopted a constitution and by-laws, and also appointed a commit tee to select officers and report at an ad journed meeting to be held on Saturday next, at 4 o'clock p. m.
