No cases for the Mayor's Court yesterday morning. , . t , A beautiful rainbow spanned j. the southeastern heavens yesterday after noon, about 7 o'clock. A dog fight at the foot of Mar ket street yesterday drew together about two hundred people. The dogs fought un til they both tumbled into the river. Up to yesterday afternoon 2,663 persons had listed their taxes. Next Friday is the last day of grace, and those who are behind should come up to the front. Rev. T. Page Ricaud, pastor of the Fifth Street M. E. church, being absent from the city, Rev. J, W. Craig will occupy his pulpit this morning and Rev Mr. Millis this evening. The Norwegian Barque Hjem met, Captain Dugemunden, was cleared from this port for Hamburg, yesterday, by Messrs D. R, Murchison & Co., with 3,232 barrels of rosin, valued at $6,090. The New Departure. Namely, the early closing of commission houses on the wharf at 5 P. M., was readi ly adopted, and for the first week has been fully acquiesced in by all. The steady business strain from 9 A. M. to 5 P. M., as a matter of course necessitated a lunch about 1 o'clock, and for a few days the dinner seekers were put to their trumps to give the "inner man" a stay to bridge them over until the postponed dinner hour, now about 5.30 P- M. Necessary expedients were soon hit upon. Some of the younger boys eame down in the early morning with sandwiches or cold biscuits, eating their lunch in silence, with copious draughts of "Adam's ale" to wash it down, but not so with their seniors; waiters were seen wending their way to the differ ent offices, and if you had dropped in between 1 and 2 . o'clock you would have found a little coterie, equal to an evening tea party, a number of friends having been called in, and you will disco ver an ample spread of sandwiches, cake, peaches and cream, coffee, milk and ice cream. These good things are sure to gene rate conviviality, and an atmosphere of good feeling is diffused, coupled with no little merriment. Just think of it, ladies ; a Water street broker serving the coffee, and hitting the exact quantity of cream and su gar! We shall not speak of the health-giving virtue of eating the frugal meal in peace, with a dash of good humor to savor it, and the beneficial result of quiet and rest after luncheon, that our doctors have discussed and decided upon. We leave that for the gentlemen themselves to descant upon in the pleasant family circle at home. Seriously, we trust all will find the change beneficial, and that the full measure of business requirements may be met. , Excitement on market Street Tester day Afternoon. Considerable excitement was created on Market street yesterday afternoon on ac count of a difficulty between a white man and a colored man. It appears that the white man owed the colored man some mo ney or at least the latter claimed that he did who asked him for it, when some words passed between them, and the white man struck the other. This was the sig nal for the gathering together of a large crowd of colored people, and finally quite a sprinkling of whites, and the fact that the white man was arrested and put under bond for his appearance to an swer to the charge of assault and battery upon the colored man, had no perceptible effect in abating the excitement, Chief of Police Brock and a squad of policemen being kept busy for some time in efforts to disperse the crowds which would gather wherever the man that was stricken would station himself and commence reciting the circumstances of the alleged assault. For tunately no serious breach of the peace occurred and the excitement, which is easily started on that particular thorough fare of a Saturday afternoon, finally sub sided. Excursion Next Thursday. There will be a family excursion down the river on Thursday next, on the steamer Passport, under the auspices of the ladies of Fifth Street M. E. Church, the boat to leave her wharf at 9 o'clock sharp. The ladies of the Fifth Street Church have always been very successful with their ex cursions, and there need be no fear tha this will prove an exception. Their art rangement in fact, preclude any such possi bility or, at least, probability. Correction. Two errors occurred in Mr. Darby's letter, which we are requested to correct. In the second paragraph occurs this sentence: "And I would sooner be defeated than say I would not run if elected under such cir cumstances." The word "run" should be serve. In another place he is quoted as being opposed.to county government. He says it should have read "present county government." Little Bridge. The work on the "Little Bridge" k pro gressing rapidly under the supervision of Mr. R. H. Beery. All the defective mate rial is being taken out and a new bend in troduced to atld to the strength of the structure, which will be in perfect order in a few days. "WINE OF CARDUI " for Ladies only. George Spicer, colored, was arraigned be fore Justice Gardner, yesterday morning, on the charge of assault and battery upon Thos. T. Beatty with a stick. Defendant was found guilty and required to pay one penny and the costs. Isaac Spicer, colored, charged with the same offence, inasmuch as he seemed to have aided and abetted his brother, even to the extent of drawing a knife and standing ready to take part in the fight, was found guilty and subjected to the same penalty as his brother. Richard Holmes, colored, charged with false pretense, had a hearing before Justice Millis, who discharged him on account of the insufficiency of the evidence, and one Thomas Moore, the prosecutor, had to pay tbe costs. Thomas T. Beatty, charged with as sault and battery upon Isaac Spicer, Jr., was found guilty, but judgment was sus pended upon the payment of costs. The same defendant was next arraigned on a peace warrant sworn out by James Spicer, and was required to give bond in the sum of $50 to keep the peace for ninety days and pay the costs. An Old Coin. A gentleman showed us a very old coin yesterday which was picked up on the streets by a colored boy. Its date is 1652. and the inscriptions are "Bristol Farthing" on one side and "The Arms of Bristol" on the other, the "arms" being the representa tion of a vessel and a fort. It is very little worn considering its extreme age. Are we to Have a Race. We Went to jail yesterday ; but with our Own free will and accord, to inspect the water arrangements under the new system, the supply now being furnished by the water works. . Any one who ever visited the jail before the present system was intro duced cannot fail to detect an improve ment as soon as they get within the walls, the disagreeable odor which formerly pre vailed, having entirely desappeared. The water apparatus is arranged with a special view to cleanliness and the absence of disa greeable odors, and in this respect the ob ject has been attained to perfection. There are now only five inmates (all colored) of the jail, and one of these James Alden- man is an old man from Pender. The others are Eliza Green, for larceny of jew elry; Sophia Swain, for fighting, and Frank Mott and Alexander Johnson, for larceny of brass. Sophia Swain is coflned for costs, This is a pretty good showing for the county of New Hanover and city of Wilmington. How They Do It. The New York Police Gazette does up in style the fatal encounter that took place a week or two ago between two colored women of bad repute" in Robeson county, in which Jame McNair stabbed Jane Mc- Keller, causing her death, picturing the dusky damsels as two lovely white girls in apparently affluent circumstanles.
