WALL, WILLIAM ENTWI8TLE, ROBERT L. STEELE, June 6th, 1868, th V'klnKham,N. c, o oawat : The Morning Star. FIRST LOVE REMEMBER ED. ROSSETTI. Peace in heF chamber, wheresoe'er It be, a holy place; The thought still brings nay soul such grace As morning meadows wear. Whether it still be small and light, A maid's who dreams alone, As from her orchard gate the moon Its ceiling showed at night: Or whether in a shadow dense . As nuptial hymns invoke, Innocent maidenhood awoke To married innocence: There still the thanks unheard await The unconscious gift bfequeathed; For there my soul this hour has breathed An air inviolate. GIRLS. Bill Arps Opinion of the Feminine Gender. A nice, pretty, sweet girl can toll a man a long way off sometimes, and make him sacrifice a power of time, and comfort and money; and when she does it all a purpose and then throws him off, I shall always think she hadn't ortei I never was in favor of a young girl turning up her nose at a clever fellow who was raised in her neighborhood and run ning off after an airy chap from away yonder; but when he does come I think she ought to let him go back quick and cheap or take him. I've always noticed that when young men go slipping away to parts unknown for a wife it's because those girls he was raised with know him too well and don't want him. I didn't go half a mile for my pard and that showed my good sense, and she didn't go no further than I did, and that showed hern, and if I was a sensible young girl and was waiting for a husband, I would set my cap for somebody I had not known a long time, but if I was a young fool I wouldent. The happiest marriages I know of are those where the folks knowd all about one another for a good while, and nary one was fooled. Romance in love affairs is mighty pretty, and a solitary horseman getting thrown from his horse is just splendid, but all this plays out in a few months, and then comes the facts the hard pan. The earth that is earthy, and the heavenly vanishes, and the baby has to be nursed of nights, and the susrar gets low, and tne diamond wedding ring won't bring color to the poor wife's cheeks, and she is away off from her mother and wants sympathy and love and kind atten tion, and a good deal of it. As Mr. Longfellow said: Life is real, life is earnest, And the baby wants a nurse. JEWELLED GARTERS. From the Laramie Boomerang the ladies are now wearing jewelled garters. We gain this in formation from the press, and so state upon our oath aforesaid. It seems to us that this is rather a peculiar move, but it may be all right. What effect it may have upon the fall elections we cannot say at this moment, nor what the result will be, looking at it from a social standpoint. We mean, of course, ooking at the question under discus sion, not ths garter itself. Probably the next grand stride in the fashion ine will be artihcial rats scattered around in covenient places, so that the wearers of moss-agate garters can jump upon a chair and howl. This is about .the only way we can see for the public to be benefited by the prevailing style of garter. Diamond-studded garters might be hung on the hat rack in the hall, where visitors can peruse them at their eisure, but, after all, that would be a kind of hollow mockery. It would be like attending a ballet where the performers wore ulster overcoats and chapparejos. PERSONAL. Cardinal Manning and Mr. Ruskin have struck up a close friendship. "The smooth old liar" is the Salt Lake Tribune's endearing designation of ex-Representative George Q- Cannon, of Utah. President Edward A. Haight, of Vincennes University, has deserted his wife and children to elope with a pretty music teacher. C. C. Fulton, the editor of the Baltimore American, will view Europe through Yankee spectacles" this summer. Philad. Times. Rev. J. A. Bron, D. D., for many years President of the Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg, died suddenly a few days ago at his residence in Lancaster of apoplexy. Mr. John Francis Clark, who, in the iudffes' box at Epsom, declares the winners of . the Derby and Oaks, has occu nied for thirty vears this position. lis father and grandfather held it for forty-six years before him. It is expected that he will be succeeded Dy nis son. The death is announced, at Blaucourt, France, of M. Minal, one of the last survivors of the first Napoleon's disas trous Moscow campaign. M. Minal was present at Borodino and entered the Kremlin with the French Emperor. fcJIe died at the age ot 94, witn lacuities unimpaired. RENEW YOUR LEASE. The Wilmington Stab has entered on its twelfth year, it is a most excellent newspaper, well ed ited, a compendium of all the news of the day. and an honor to Its city, to North Carolina and to North Carolina Journalism. Charlotte Observer, That magnificent beaming Stab has completed its twenty-second volume. It is one of the most brilliant, erudite and sparkling dailies south of the Potomac. The system in the get up of the pa per surpasses them all. Tarboro Southerner. Tlie Wilmington Stab is now taking the regular midnight Associated Press reports, and has be sides increased the amount of its reading matter The Stab is an excellent paper. Its prosperity is not surprising since it Is so deserving. Charlot'e uoserver. The Times cannot say a word too good for the Wilmington Stab. It has Inst reached one of its many birthdays. As a newspaper it is a favorite with the State press and is sought after by the people. Long and prosperous life to it, Reids vUle Times. Why is it that all the papers with the name of Star are such bright little journals ? The Wilming ton (n. u.) stab, tne Washington mar, tne rrea ericksburg Star, New York Star, for example. There must be something in a name after ah. Richmond (Ya.) State. The Wilmington Stab, we are pleased to notice. still continues on the high road to success. We esteem the Stab verv hurhlv. regarding it as one of the very best of our exchanges, and consider it the peer of any journal published in tbe South. uxfora free Lance The Morning Stab, one of the best dailies we know, and as a newspaper, in our opinion, the very best, has entered upon its twelfth year. In every particular the Stab comes fully up to the mark as the principle daily in our chief commer cial city. Long may it twinkle. Alamance Glean er. The Wilmington Stab has entered upon its 12th volume, and we are pleased to notice still contin ues on tne road to success, we esteem tne stab very highly, regarding it as one of the very best newspapers that comes to this office. Its news columns are always a little fuller than those of any other of our exchanges, and its editorial de aartment is conducted With much ability. Mor aanton Blade. Humble in Its beginnings, as was inseparable from an enterprise begun amid the wreck of for tune that attended the collapse of the Southern Confederacy, the Stab has steadily "waxed" un til it now beams resplendent in the full glow of a constantly brightening prosperity. As a newspa per it has few equals, and no superior, for appro priate selection and judicious arrangement, and we are proud to rank it among our most accepta ble exchanges. Ilillstxrro Recorder. The Wilmington Morning Stab has entered unfl on the thirteenth year of its existence, and we take this opportunity to congratulate It upon its prosperity and deserved popularity. The remark able success of the Stab is due to its strict attenj tion to business. The boast of the Stab (rightful ly too) is that it always has the news, and this is the first thine in Journalism. Otherwise the pa per is all that the term of "good newspaper" hn- nes, and its corps or editors and reporters are roughly educated newspaper men. May the Ithy. moral influence of the Star never be re tarded, and may its genial enterprising proprie tor enjoy many more nappy years of usefulness- Goidsboro Messenger.
