Col. Willie Canaday is the coming man coming to grief. VV. L. Scott; of Erie, Penn., has just paid $30,000 for an English stud. There is not a lager beer brewery in all England, but one is to . be erected. The Green backers and Radicals in south Carolina are billing and cooing. It is all a matter of place and profit. The New York Commercial and Financial Chronicle figures the cot ton crop of 1881-82 at 5,435,845 bales. And now the papers say look out for Monday when the British will make a general move against the Egyptians. Only 1,500,000 baskets of peaches received in New York during the season. That is a small allowance. That is if they really love peaches. The American rifle team in their three days' practice at Creed moor J i showed very poor skill at long range. It is almost certain that they will be beaten and badly beaten by the Bri tish. Baltimore is very busy preparing its Mardi Gras, which it prefers to call its Oriole There are to be three days' processions. It is to be hoped the pageant will not be as much of a failure as it was reported to be last vear. The Baltimore Day, in a caustic article on Bob Ingersoll,. the notori ous scoffer and infidel, says pf his failure as a lawyer in an important case : He has shown himself a buffoon in manners, a blackguard by habit and a weak ling in any attempt at the logical presenta tion of facts and arguments with the view to influencing a court and jury. That his old admirers will see this we can scarcely hope, but the sensible part of mankind will understand that he has simply collapsed, and v iew the spectacle without regret." . The jocund Colonel Buck Parker: 1 anaay now running his ' third heat in the Con eressional race. But. I TViallv lirtlTr n..:Vl 1-1.1 in-law save his wind and heels? Hav ing been distanced in the first two heats, what earthly chance has the Canadayan pony of winning the race? THE STATE CAMPAIGN, Capt. Swift Gailoway spoke' at Wilson on Tuesday last. Jim Leach has gone. If there is any more Democratic timber of that kind the sooner it goes the better. Swift OaUoway. Cocke, chairman of the Mongrel tribe. has announced himself as a candidate for the U. S. House. Hit in the belly with a violent hankering after rub. Charles R. Jones was converted a few days ago in Charlotte under Zeb Vance's preaching. Vance will convert the worst, unless he is given up to reprobacy of mind and hardness of heart. Durham Recorder. From a letter in the New Berne Journal: Price, the Liberal, has been to Swan Quarter. He made his little speeches, con sisting chiefly in arraigning the Democratic party. We thought he was a Liberal, but judging from his speech he is a Radical. Wednesday was a big day in Concord. Besides the circus they had a big speech by Gov. Vance, and it is stated honestly to us that Vance drew a larger crowd than the circus did. The people were capti vated, and some of them were heard to swear that Vance must, shall and will be our Governor again, for the fourth time. CharlottelObserver. We hear it whispered around that;Col. L. C. Edwards, of Oxford, who is wanting to be Judge of this district, met Sherman's army in Raleigh in 1865, aud made them a speech in which he said it was the proudest day of his life when he saw the Federal flag floating from the top of the Capitol of his native State; and that he never heard of a Federal victory but what he was glad. Henderson Chid Leaf. Senator Ransom's speech last night was an eloquent and dispassionate vindication of the Democratic party in the State and nation. It was the speech of a statesman. Quite a number of ladies heard Sena tor Ransom last night. One, a little more expressive of her admiration than the others, said, as she was leaving the court house, "isn't he just too lovely for any-, thing! It I were a Republican I'd join the Democrats sure." Greensboro Patriot. TBI IB CITY. NEW ADVERTISBHIENTS. Carpets. Yates School books. F. H. Darby Wanted. D. O'Connor For rent A. David Leader stock. Harkless Reaves, colored, had a hearing before Justice Millis, yesterday, on the charge of committing an assault upon Solo mon Moore, colored. Defendant submitted and was required to pay the costs. Solomon Moore, who was next arraigned on the charge Of assaulting H. Reaves, was found guilty, out juagment was suspenaea on the payment of costs. Wm. Cowan, charged with assault and battery upon Solomon Moore, was adjudged not guilty, the prosecutor being required to pay the costs. This is .the young man who made such good time on Princess street Friday morning, and who lay con cealed and perspiring in a hot basement for nearly two hours. If he had stood his ground he would have had no trouble Solomon Moore was committed to jail. New Hanover County. Mr. S. A. Currie, who runs a plantation near this city, had some very fine cotton in market yesterday, the first from his field of twelve acres in the staple, for which he re- ceived 3 cents per pound in the seed, which he says is about equivalent to tne present market value of the middling grade ot tne article in its prepared state. Some have argued that the soil in the neighborhood of Wilmineton was not suitable for the culti vation of the cotton plant, but Mr. Currie's experiment is a complete refutation of this assertion. And, besides, he says he took no extra pains in its cultivation. A Cyelone Coining, Warning reports were telegraphed to South Atlantic ports yesterday afternoon that a cyclone, centering near the mouth of the Mississippi river, was moving m a northeasterly direction. Coroner Hewlett visited the house of the late Primus Young, in Cape Fear Town ship, whose mutilated remains were discov ered in his own yard, on Friday morning, mention of which was made in the Star, and found whatremaine of the body on the spot and in the condition described. The greater portion of the remains had been i carred off by dogs and hogs together, but what was left of the poor old man was gath ered together under Coroner Hew lett's direction and buried on the premises. There is no means of knowing howjhe met his death, and as no one came forward to make an affidavit no inquest was held. Deceased, who formerly belonged to Mr. Armond D. Young, was well known in this city and throughout the surrounding country. A Proposed Beneficiary Excursion. An excursion will be given on the steam er Passport on Wednesday next, 13th inst., weather permitting, for the benefit pf the Ladies' Benevolent Society. The object is a noble one and it is hoped that our citizens in large numbers will patronize the excur sion, by which means they will be enjoying themselves and doing a good action at the same time, and one that may carry with it a lasting blessing. Refreshments will be furnished on. the boat. It is requested that the pastors Of the va rious churches announce the proposed ex cursion from their pulpits this morning. An Extraordinary Haul of HI nJIets. We met a gentleman from Onslow coun ty, yesterday, who informs us of an ex traordinary catch of mullets.
