Cameron is now relying on 40,000 Catholics to save his bacon. The 1'oss will find himself baulked. Billy Mahone paid the colored blasphemer, Langston, $2,500 for his services, but .it brought no due re turns. John S. Wise and a Democrat in Lancaster county, Va., drew pistols on each other, but were prevented from usino- them . What State in tbe Union has two Senators who are the equal of Ran som and Vance before the people ? Not one, we are sure. William J. Hamilton, it is alleged, has been entirely sane since 1876. At that time he was sent to the Lu natic Asylum at Ward's Island, N. Y. If true it is a great shame. Capt. Bob Lyon is the Libero-Re-publicano-AntiiProhibitiono candi date for the Senate from Bladen and Brunswick. He was a rampant Pro hibitionist last year, and made speeches in favor of it. Next! "Governor Tom Crittenden says: The Greeubackers are the only free traders, i. e., they are always ready for a free fight." Ex- Hope Col. Tom had no reference to reenbacker Winston, who is dying to get something. Pat Donan is persuading people to go to Dakota. What for? When last heard from he was lecturing at Fargo.. A man must be far gone who would leave Southern civiliza tion for "such a country and such a people." We do not know anything about Joseph N. Dolph, Senator elect from Oregon, but he cannot be a worse man than the fellow he beats John Hippell Mitchell. It speaks well for Oregon that this fellow is dropped. Of course he is a Radical. ' THE IViOENING VOL. XXXI. NO. 28. "While the Revenue bosses in North Carolina are crowing and bragging about what they are going to do in November, it is interesting and en couraging to 'know that Big Boss Arthur is not uproarious, and his Cabinet are in the same dubious and doleful sorts. A special from Wash ington on the 22nd to the Baltimore Sun has this cheering announcement: "In the informal discussions on the politi cal situation between the President and the members of the Cabinet on Friday and again on last night, the anticipations as to what the ides of November will bring forth were not of the most cheering char acter. It is a significant and unmistakable fact that Republican losses are expected by every member of the Cabinet in his own State, with the possible exception of Secre tary Frelinghuysen, and-th.is for the reason that the Republicans never Expect much in New Jersey any way. Even that most adroit politician, Secretary Chandler, views tbe handwriting on the wall with evident appre hension, and had no good news to commu nicate to the President and the Cabinet. It is ctfven out to-day as the official determina tion of the President and Cabinet that gov ernment employes must consider themselves as entirely free, if so disposed, to decline any more contributions to campaign funds. It must be that this decision was arrived at because the President and his Cabinet are at last convinced that this is one of the years when money cannot stem the over whelming tide of public opinion. It is not more than two weeks since an intimate friend of Secretary Folger declared that they would buy enough v.otes to elect him Governor of New York. " "An Ethiopian cannot change his color, nor a leopard his skin, but my God ! fellow-citizens, how quick a white man be comes a nigger when he votes the Repub lican ticket. Jame M. Leach, Hancock Elector for 1880." Leach denies this famous saying, but unfortunately hundreds and thou sands heard the bitter partisan use this language. A correspondent writing from Taylorsville on the 16th inst., to the Statesville Landmark, says: "There are thousands of men in the State that heard him say it, and they have not forgotten it. Robert "Watts, a colored school teacher in this county, who heard him deny it here on Friday, says he heard him use it in Statesville two years ago. The colored people have not forgotten his slan derous abuse of past years, and the white people never will. " It is something when the old sinner has shame enough to deny this and other hard sayings of his. Ikey Young has pocketed $60,000 of the people's money ($5,000 a year for the last twelve years,) as collector of the Raleigh revenue district. Lexington Dispatch. Several years ago we heard the late Richard C. Badger say that at that time Young's annual pay was full $19,000. It was razeed after that, but we suppose he has averaged at least $10,000 since the Revenue as pirant changed his politics, for he too was a Democrat. Whoever expected to see the day when under a Radical Administra tion it would become uncomfortable and unprofitable in North Carolina and Virginia for an old soldier to stand by the Republican colors and to be suspected of being a traitor for so doing ? And yet such is the fact under Boss Arthur and Boss Mott and Boss Mahone. The much talked of Casino in New York has been opened, and although owing to its construction it was ex tremely cold and windy, 1,200 ladies and men attended the first perform ance and were delighted. Every seat was taken and many had to stancL Jones of the New York Tiines was offered a big office if he would make his paper "siz" for the Folger. He dipped his iron at once in a tub of "frozen water," and ever since then the Times has been of the tempera ture of the North Pole. THE STATE CAMPAIGN. J. William Thome, the infidel who was expelled from the Legislature, is a candi date for the Senate in Warren. Pemberton and Turner, two Democrats, are running for the Legislature in Cabarrus agaiDst one Rad. Draw straws, gentlemen, and let one retire. Do not help lose the Legislature. Leach passed through last night and his most intimate friends failed to recognize him. He was mistaken for the agent of an indigo factory. He was a sight to look at. So blue. Greensboro Patriot. Capt. P. M. Mull, well known in Catawba, accuses, through the Morganton Index, D. C. Pearson, the radical candidate for the Legis alaturefrom Burke county, of being a part ner of his in blockading. Newton Enter prise. The political outlook was never better", and our Democracy, never more solid in old Ashe than at present. Liberalism. Reve nue riqgs and sold-out Democrats have about dispersed from the political horizon. Lenoir Topic. The Independent-Liberal candidate "for the office of Superior Court Clerk in this county, T. A. Grady, gets things badly mixed at times. It has not been many years since he refused to shake hands with Gov. Brogden because the latter was a Republi can. Now.he expects to be elected by negro otea.Ooldsboro Messenger. A free ballot and a fair count will give us the county by 250 majority. - James Edwin Moore ia now canvassing the coun ties east of the Chowan river in the Interest of the Democratic party. As a public WILMINGTON, speaker he has few superiors in North Caro lina, and we are hopeful of most cheering, results. wutiam8ton limes. . A letter from Yadkinville informs us that Leach spoke two hours and a half in the courthouse in that place last Monday, to an audience of , 39 persons, 14 of whom were Democrats and two of them from the country. We are informed that he de voted himself to himself, and that he "cut up more shines than Robinson's Brazilian monkey. Statesville Landmark. This S pel man who runs a paper called the Journal, in Raleigh, says: "We are in formed that Senator Vance's speech in Le noir was one ol tne most vulgar and inde cent harangues ever delivered in public." and dares Vance or his friends to deny it. We deny it. There is not a word of truth in the statement. There were ladies present to hear tne Senator.anaweknow and every one knows who heard him, that no more chaste or more modest address was ever de livered in our court house. Lenoir Topic. Our news from Stokes county is of the most encouraging character, and we may look for one oi her old-time rousing Demo cratic majorities and the election of the en tire Democratic county ticket. Rev. L. Rights, who announced himself as an independent candidate for Register of Deeds for this county, has withdrawn from the race and will give his support to Capt. Mast. If Leach and Price were such popular gentlemen as the Mott Republicans claim them to be, why is it that Dr. Mott sends them so far from home to do their speaking? Winston Sentinel. We hear that when Dockery spoke at Bakersville, his most ardent and vociferous friend was a Republican from East Tennes see, who shouted and applauded him with out stint for the first hour. Col. D. in jected into his old speech at that point an eulogium on Col. Folk, and called upon his friends to rally to his support. His Tennessee friend had never heard before that Folk was on the ticket, and left, mut tering as he 'went," that's enough for me." "What is enough," said an acquaintance at the door? "Why he is running on a ticket with old Folk.'1 "Well what have you against Folk ?" "What have I against Folk, why d n him, he hung my daddy." Morganton Index. Spirits Turpentine. Henry Ward Beecher won the trotting race at Henderson a few days ago. Williamston Times : We are pained to learn of the serious illness of Dr. Burbank. The Charlotte Observer appeared as au eight-page paper on Sunday, and all on account of advertising. That speaks well for Charlotte. Mount Airy JS'ews: Much wheat is being sown this fall in this section. Our farmers are waking up and our farming in terests are receiving more attention. Now for a "no-fence" law. Stonewall Enterprise: Rev. F. B. McCall has for the past week been con ducting a protracted meeting at Mt. Zion. The meetings closed yesterday. Result, six accessions. Rev. John Huske, of Trinity Church, Statesville, has accepted a call to the Episcopal churches at Chapel Hill and Durham. He will take charge of these parishes the first of January and will re side at (Jhapel Hill. Lexington Dispatch : Randolph Henderson, a colored man, had his hip badly crushed at the depot here last Satur day evening while coupling cars. He was taken to his home at Greensboro at once, and we learn has since died. The Winston Sentinel: The "red chills" are prevalent in Guilford. Persons having it turn as red .as blood. Ex ceedingly heavy breaks of tobacco the past week with good prices, and as a result tne farmers go home with fat pocket-books. Newton Enterprise : Dr. Ford, of Bandy's township, tells us that diphthe ria lias become an epidemic in the western part of Catawba, and in portions of Burke and Cleaveland counties. It is of a ma lignant form and proves Jvery fatal. In one graveyard in Cleaveland county twenty children were buried in ten days. Hickory Carolinian: We would like to see Judge Meares of the Wilmington Criminal Court, promoted to the State Dis trict Bench. lie sent two men to jail for applauding the verdict of a jury in his court last week. Courts are coming to be looked on by many folkB as nothing more than an ordinary gathering for amusement or eujoyment.. Tarboro Guide: Thursday af ternoon, as the train was leaving William ston for the river, a colored woman was walking on the track. The engineer blew his whistle and reversed his lever. The woman stepped out on the end of one of the cross ties, but not far enough to prevent the tender from striking her. She was knocked down the embankment and died in less than an hour. Danbury Reporter: The Pep per Mining Company, at this place, pro pose collecting specimens of every mineral of value to be found in the county, with the name of the owner of. the land upon which it is found. They will have suitable cases made, and keep the minerals so ar ranged that speculators or lovers of the curious may see them at all times, and know where they are found. Beaufort Telephone: The health of Beaufort was never better than it is now ; per contra, some of our . exchanges contain accounts of much sickness in certain locali ties of the State. . Ia the Albemarle coun try a disease 'known as yellow chills or hemorrhage fevers prevails to' an alarming extent. On Saturday last we visited the works of the North Carolina Oil and Guano Company, at Lenoxville, near this place, and were just in time to see them re ceive and work up the first fish. An id stalment of about 10,000 Were brought up from Cape Lookout in- sloops and were soon disposed of. Charlotte Observer : Jas. Bur- rus and Wilson Phifer, colored, were fined $12.50 each by the Mayor yesterday morn ing for fast driving. We are glad to learn that Dr. Columbus Mills' condition is somewhat improved and hopes are enter tained of his recovery. During the past week a most interesting rehgioxs re vival has been in progress at Calvary Mis sion church in this city, and it will continue through next week. Yesterday there were thirty-five penitents at the altar, and during the' week there have been about eighteen conversions. The State Fair grounds were filled with side shows and catch pen nies of all descriptions. The one that raked in the most shekels was the tent in which the '.'mermaid" was exhibited. The Wilmington Fox Club were on the war-path yesterday morning, but struck no game. There was too much water. Republican meetings were be ing held in different parts of the city Mon day night, and some of them were kept up nearly all night. Rev. J. C. Hiden, D. D., now stationed at Smithfield, near Petersburg, Va., has accepted a call to the Baptist Church at Charlottesville, Va. There was an unexpected shower early yesterday morning, which was fol lowed by a very cool northwest wind, which made fires and overcoats desirable. The speech of Gen. Our friends of the Hibernian Benevolent Society will extend an invita tion to Senator Vance to visit their "Socia ble" at Germania Hall after the speaking to-morrow night. Hall & Pearsall, one bar rel "Onslow" extra family flour, for the largest yield of corn from a one-horse crop. M. J. Dinglehoef, one nice silver preserve dish, for the best display of pies and cakes. Wilmington Wants a Good White Brass Band. What is to be thought of a city of twenty thousand population and not a single white brass band ? Wilmington is in that unen terprising condition just now. For some years our city boasted of a first-class white band, but it has gone the way of all such enterprises in Wilmington. One of the best and most useful members of the late Wilmington Cornet Concert Club informed us yesterday, however, that he would wil lingly assist in reorganizing the band if others would show a deposition to do like wise. Wilmington -certainly needs a good band, and we hope she may soon have it. Dr. Iaffertyi Proposed Lectures.; .A Rev. F. H. Wood, who has been in Cor respondence with Rev. Dr. Lafferty, with reference to his proposed lectures in this city, informs us tthat, owing to previous engagements, he Will not be able to visit Wilmington before the latter part of No vember, but he will certainly do so about that time if nothing serious happens to pre vent. His .lectures will be for the benefit of Front Street Methodist Church. OPERA HOUSE. Jno, A. Stevena In 14 Passion's Slave." Another large crowd attended the Theatre last night and witnessed the performance of "Passion's Slave," by Mr. John A. Stevens and Company. The play is a melodrama, abounding in numerous exciting scenes and strong situations, with plenty of fun and frolic generally mixed in to give rarity and contrast, and its presentation was often loudly applauded by the audience. The acting was very good throughout and jus tice done all the parts, the comedy business being particularly well done and eliciting from those in attendance the greatest share of favor. In this line Miss Vane, as the lady's maid, and Messrs. Walton and Pear son, as her lovers, bore off the honors which their execellent acting richly deserved. Old Landmarks. Workmen were engaged yesterday in do molishing the old buildings just south of Princess, between Second and Third Streets, being probably among the oldest buildings in the city. One of them is commonly re ported to have been the house in which Wm, Hooper, one of the signers of the Declare lion of Independence, was born. It bears the impress of extreme old age and ia built in a style which must have prevailed a good many years ago, the walls asgwell as the roof being covered with shingles Slowly but surely the landmarks which have served as links to connect us with the past generations are giving place to the march of improvement and progress, and soon we will have nothing to remind us of those eventful times of which we have heard our fathers so often speak. ' Suit Decided. The suit of Fowle vs. Kerchner et al., which has been hanging fire in the Supreme Court for some time past, was decided yes terday in favor of the defendants.
