The Morning Star, A SONNET. BY RICHARD REALP. For ever, through the world's material .' forms. Heaven shoots its immaterial ; night and day Apocalyptic intimations stray Across the rifts of matter; viewless arms Lean lovingly toward us from the air ; There is a breathing marvel in the sea; The sapphire foreheads of the mountains wear A light within light which ensymbols the Unutterable ueauty ana renecuon That, with immeasurahle strivings, strives Through bodied form and sensuous indi rection ' To hint upon our dull and hardened lives (Poor lives, that cannot see nor hear aright!) The bodiless glories which are out of sight. SCIENTIFIC GOSSIP. Werderraann has patented his new electric incandescent lamp. It is reported that the telephone is now in successful operation as an expe dient for communicating with divers en gaged in difficult and dangerous work. The assertion is made that from an annual cotton crop of 6,600,000 bales seed can be obtained to yield $100,000,000 worth of oil. It is assumed that every 400-pound bale gives 1,200 pounds of seed. Since the inauguration of the through international serviee the traffic of the St. Gothard tunnel has increased so that the company have already obtained sanction for laying the second pair of rails in the tunnel. On Calais harbor since 1877 not less than 11,500,000 francs were expended, and the money seems to have been well laid out, for a vote of more than seven millions in addition has been accorded. As a piece of engineering the work so far is admi rable. Peruvian guano rendered solu ble was tried by Prof. E. Koch on barley aud potatoes. The smallest quantities of the manure gave a very apparent increase in the product when the crop was potatoes. If the seed sown was barley a much larger proportion of the manure had to be used to effect anything like the same result. POLITICAL, PENCILLINGS. Frye, of Maine, declined to take the stump for Robeson ; at least the New i ork bun says so. In Erie countyfN.Y.) alone 1,500 Republicans have bolted Folcer for Cleve land, and the good work still goes on. Gen. Rosecrans is of the opinion that California will give 10,000 Democratic majority and elect five Democratic Con gressmen out of six. The Utica Herald (Rep.) says that Judge Folger will be beaten and badly beaten in that part of New York State north of Harlem bridge. David A. Boody, who has been nominated by the Republicans of the Second New York District to oppose "Richelieu" Robinson, is a Democratic free trader. A few evenings ago Judge "Jer ry" Black presided at a political meeting at "iork, Penn. On taking the chair he said : "I hardly intended to be here to-night; but saw in a little newspaper that Judge Black would now have to show his hand in this campaign. There they are," and he gracefully held forward both hands. "There is no stain on them. They never held a bribe." New York Tribune. TWINKLINGS. The cost of the French squad ron of evolution in the Mediterranean is estimated at $29,000,000. The pay of the officers and crew is $4,000 a day. And this in profound peace. An editor wrote a headline, "A Horrible Blunder," to go over a railroad accident; but though it was the printer's fault that it got over an account of a wed ding, the editor was the man thrashed all tne same. Two boarding-housekeepers are comparing notes. "It pears to me, Mrs. Miggles, that your chicken salad is never found out leastways I never heard none of the boarders complain." "You see," exclaimed Mrs. Miggles, "I alius chop up i few feathers with the veal. It is reported that in a popula tion of 150,000 Utah has registered 34,000 votes under the Edmunds registry, while about 15,000, three-fourths of them women. are disfranchised by it. Of the total regis try about 26,000 are Mormons. .The Gen tile vote would reach 10,000, but a part of the women refuse to act. feIisonal. W. H. Vanderbilt has imported a dinner set of Dresden china, numbering 800 pieces, at a cost of $4,000. Kennard Philp, who was tried for writing the Morey letter, is to bring an action agafnst George Bliss for false ar rest. Fifty-three Mormon missiona ries, without-the fear of the Utah Commis sion before their eyes, sailed for Europe Tuesday on an evangelizing mission. Among them is Bishop Bennett. Judge Hammond's death is a loss to the judiciary of Maryland. He was a man of culture and of incorrigible integ rity. As a judge, as a citizen and as a man he enjoyed the respect of all who knew him. Bait. American. POLITICAL POINTS. The Republicans have pressed "the old rebel yell" into service in the In diana campaign. We don't know whether they borrowed it of Chalmers or Mahone. Wash. Post, Dern. The Republican party has gone into bankruptcy. Register Gorham has ap pointed Messrs. Mahone, Chalmers, Cash & Co. assignees of the estate, and the senior member of that firm is now in Washington administering upon its assets. Wash. Post, Dem. Mahone (Virginia) is said to smile the top of his head into an island whenever President Arthur promulgates some of his beautiful sentiments to the ef fect that "no force of pressure should be used to compel the payment of political as sessments." Wash. Star. "Presumption begins in ignorance and ends in ruin." On the other hand, the pro duction of Kidney-Wort began with wise cautions and scientific research, and its use ends in restoring shattered constitutions and endowing men and women with health and happiness. "My tormented back," is the exclamation of more than one poor hard working man and woman; do you know why it aches? It is because yonr kidneys are overtasked and need strength ening, and your system needs to be cleansed of bad humors. You need Kidney-Wort. t w Xbe Distinguishing Cnarm. , A delightful fragrance of freshly gathered flowers and SDices is the distinguishing charm of Flore'ston Cologne.
