The poet-editor of the Norfolk Mmmark, the gifted Hope, referr ing to what is said of a monument to the meritorious Gen. Pender, says: "We are glad to see that this is in con templation, and our friends across the Bor der should set to work on some regular sys tem to adorn the grounds of their State Capitol with the bronze effigies of some of ber greatest men, ajiongwbom the lament ed Pender would bold no mean place in the eyes of posterity." Our State capitol has but one mon ument and that is in honor of a Vir ginian the immortal Washington. It is of bronze and is a copy of IIou don's statue in the Virjjinia capitol. North Carolina had a splendid statue of Washington in marble, by the great Italian sculptor, Canova, but it was destroyed when the oid capi tol was burned. If I remember right I was in San Francisco at the time this play was pro duced. Tho whole community of that city was inexpressibly shocked, and it was in obedience to an outraged public sentiment that the exhibition was stopped by the May or and Council. What sort of effect do you think, sir, would be produced on the minds of the youth of our country by such spectacles? It is very safe to say a V - a . m mac meir eneci wouia oe to vulgarize toe sacred history of Jesus Christ and to de grade the name of Christianity. Davidson College is to have a weekly newspaper. Raleigh News- Observer : The funeral of the late Dr. Badger, whose re mains were brought .here from New York, was held from Christ Church yesterday morning, and was conducted by Rev. Dr. Marshall. Greensboro Patriot; An Ire dell county farmer, assisted by two mules and one hand, made last year 21 bales of cotton, averaging 450 pounds to the bale, 375 bushels of corn, a fine crop of oats and a plenty of wheat to do him. Charlotte Observer: We are in formed that on the 9th day of last Decem ber a public meeting was held at Olin to consider the question of the educational in terests of that section. At the same meet ing one hundred and eight scholars were pledged,' and the sum of five hundred dol l&s was also pledged to put the old school buildings in thorough repair. Elizabeth City Economist : A whale was taken on the sea beach of Dare county, on Wednesday, that yielded, from his head alone 125 gallons of oil. He was evidently pursued by some sea monster and ran upon the beach, as a choice of death. Thirty feet loDg, and valued all .told, at f 1,500. Frof. Kerr has done good work for the State, and it will not be easy to sup ply his place. Old Bertie can beat the Western part of the State: We have in our township, 30 persons over the age of 70 years ; two of them, males, between 85 and 90 years; three 80 and 85 ; four, 75 and 80; six, 70 and 75. Females; two between 80 and 85; four, 75 and 80; eight, 70 and 75. Charlotte Journal: A negro named Abner Henderson, living near Query's Turnout, in this county, was acci dentally shot in both hands a few days ago by his own gun, and has since died from the effects of his wounds. Every town in this county, "Pinchgut" not excepted, wants the present Legislature to pass a law incorporating companies and authorizing them to issue bonds to macadamize every road known by the name of street, Statcsville dots: After one week's trial, Miss Mitchell has closed her day school, owing to her health being too feeble to con tinue. Mr. H. C. Martin has returned from a trip through the counties of Yadkin, Surry, Wilkes and Alexander, and reports the largest and best crop of tobacco ever harvested before. Elizabeth City Economist: The fire fiend burnt down four buildings on Wednesday night, the property of R. F. Overman. Much of their contents was destroyed. We regret to learn that the death last week, in Edenton, of a daugh ter of W. B. Shaw, Esq. Probably the most exciting, able and-Hnteresting de bate that ever took place in the legislative balls of North Carolina, was in 1831, when, after the burning of the old capitol build ing and the sessions of the Legislature were held in the Governor's Mansion at the foot of Fayetteville street, a proposition was in troduced to remove the Capitol to Fayette ville. On the one side, in the House, were Gaston and young Wm. H. Haywood and other lesser lights in opposition to the re moval. On the other side were Louis D. Henry of Fayetteville, Chas. Fisher, of Rowan, and others. In the Senate the leaders opposed were Judge Jno. D. Toomer, of Cumberland, and Judge Henry Sewell, of Wake. Chiefly to Gaston's great power in debate Raleigh owes its metro politan position to-day. Oxford Torchlight: We failed to note last week the assignment of Messrs. J. R. Young & Co., of Henderson, to John D. Cooper, Esq., as trustee. James I. Moore. Esq., left Oxford last Wednesday for Raleigh, carrying with him the testi mony taken before John Blacknall in his contest with A. H. A. Williams." Objec tion to receiving the testimony will be raised because of defect in notice to take deposition. We are pained to chroni cle the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Kyle of this place. Mrs. Kyle passed over to the Great Unknown on Saturday last. She was the widow of Robt. Kyle whose history as a successful merchant of Oxford is well known to the older inhabitants. Sixty years ago Mrs. Kyle, with her husband, came from Ireland to Oxford to live, that was in 1818. Her life has been a succession of good deeds, to the church, to the poor, and to her neignoors. one was Dorn nve years before the present century was. (She was one oftGod's saints on earth a true woman every way. -She was for more than fifty years a member of the Episcopal church. Stab.) New Berne Journal: Kinston has quarantined against Trenton. The funeral services of Mr. Francis J. Fulford will be held at Christ Church this morning. Raleieh editorial correspondence: It seems to be believed that the Governor's re commendation about giving away the At lantic road will end in smoke. The Gov ernor's statement about the road being worthless was so happily put that it has convinced the Legislature of its truthful ness, and the members don t care aoout stultifying themselves by pretending that by eivine their "worthless property" they can get 150 miles of road built. The Wes tern North Carolina is in trouble, too, but no bill has vet been introduced. Col. An drews has a bill drawn up to allow that road to issue bonds now, and not wait until it is completed to Ducktown; but the Western members will fight this bitterly. - We find that Governor Jarvis ana tsu- perLitendent Scarborough have but a small fnllowine in their visionary, wild eoose chase to amend the constitution to allow more tax to be levied for general school purposes. In the Senatorial contest in Minnesota Windom is ahead, with fifty votes. In Michigan, Ferry and Stout are even at forty-nine; necessary to a choice, sixty -five. L. A. Smith, Esq., Newberne, N. At the opening of Germauia Lodge Nor4, K. of P., held last evening, it was announced that P. C, W. F. Infantry. Pursuant to a notice published in the Star, calling for a meeting of the surviv ors of Company I, 18th Regiment N. ?. In fantry, the following assembled at the store of Mr. B. F. White, on Wednesday evening: Dr. T. F. Wood, Geo. W. Hug gins, E. J. Moore, C. H. King, B. F. White, Josiah Merritt, F. H. Mitchell. F. G. Rob inson, Wm. Blanks, John Cowan. Dr. Wood was called to the Chair and Capt. Cowan requested to act as Secretary. The Chairman stated the object of the meeting to be held to take into consideration the case of a former comrade, Mr. Benjamin L. Clark, who now lies in a helpless condition. physically and pecuniarily, the result of I wounds received in the late war. I Messrs. Blanks, King and White were Altaffer had but recently returned from a appointed a committee to raise the neces- pleasant visit to his father when he re sary funds to meet the present and pros- ceived the sad announcement of the fatal pective wants of Mr. Clark, and Dr. Wood J was named as Treasurer, to receive and dis burse the sums placed in his hands. The chairman stated that he thought the City Hospital would in all probability be enlarged, and suggested the feasibility of procuring a be'd in that institution; and further suggested that a committee be ap pointed to ascertain at what cost a bed could be endowed, and kept for the use of disabled ex-Confederates. On motion the suggestion was adopted, and Messrs. F. G. Robinson, Geo. W. Hug gins and E. J. Moore were named as the committee to look into the matter. After adopting a suggestion that those present make it a duty to visit Mr. Clark, it was decided to meet again on Wednesday, the 31st inst., at 7i o'clock, at Dr. Wood's office. We learn that the committee have thus far succeeded in collecting from among the survivors of Company I the sum of $39.50 for the benefit of Mr. Clark. The Southern Ore Company. By reference to an advertisement in this issue of the Star it will be seen that books of subscription to the capital stock of the Southern Ore Company have been opened at the First National Bank and at the Bank of New Hanover. There are only one hun dred shares remaining to be taken, and surely the business men of Wilmington will not hesitate to subscribe this small amount in an enterprise which seems des tined to take such an important position among our commerical industries. We un derstand that the works, when in opera tion, will give employment to quite a large number of laborers. The books will only remain open to-day and to morrow, and those of our citizens who desire to become identified with the enterprise by subscrib ing to the stock will have to act at once. Charleston Not to Have Blabop Nor throp. On the strength of an Associated Press telegram in oar last' issue, stating on the authority of the Catholic Beview, of New York, that Bishop Northrop, of this State, had been appointed to the See of Charleston,-made-vacant by the death of Bishop Lynch, there was considerable stir and un easiness manifested among our Catholic friends in this city. We have the authority of Rev. Father Gross for stating, however, that there is no truth in the dispatch alluded to, so far as it refers to Bishop Northrop, - who will continue in his present position. ' I, O, It. If.
