Fitz Hugh Lee did not "gush," as represented, when in New York. His utterances were in good taste and faithful to the past. The HeraUl re- I'ort, lie says, is correct: "He had been reared in a different faith from his Northern associates in the army, mil he had thought that the State of. Vir ginia had the first right to his services and Ins sword. But when the sun of tLc Con federacy had gone down behind the hills of Appomattox be bad realized that the war w is over. He was now a citizen of the tailed States, equally interested with every other citizen in its clory and greatness, and t loyal a citizen as any." Senator Dortch stated in the Se nate that Mr. James I. Moore, of ranville, would have been seated if the vote had been full. The Legis lature has done a proper thing in giving him his pay. Ho had an ex cellent case, was indorsed by six of the committee ont of eight and was entitled to his seat. His is the only ase we remember that we thought the contestant waa entitled to his pay although failing to get his seat. The Legislature ought to settle all such eases at the beginning and not at the tail end of the session. As a rule it is a fraud upon the people to make them pay for two persons when but one is entitled to his seat. V. 1 VOL, XXXI. NO. 126. , Spirits Turpentine. J. J. Jackson, " of Wilson, has failed in business. The Wilson Siflings has com pleted its first year. It has steadily grown in size and favor from its first number. Charlotte Journal: Late infor mation received by - a gentleman in this place, says that David Fraley who was ar rested for the murder of II. T. Walker in Stanley county last week, confessed the deed on his hearing before the magistrate. Mr. Vest Caldwell, a son of Mark Caldwell, who lives near Caldwell's Station, on the A. T. & O. Railroad, was, on Wed nesday, accidentally caught in a cotton-gin which tore off one. of his hands. A prominent citizen of Iredell county reports that chestnut, oak, and hickory trees are rapidly dying- out. Mrs. Richard Ashe, of San Joaquin Valley, southern California, has just completed a trip of 3,000 miles across the continent without an escort of any kind, and is now the guest of her sister, Mrs. Dr. Summerell. Sheris a daughter of the late Prof. Mitchell. Star.) Wilson Advance: It now turns out that the Richmond and Danville Com pany don't want to go to Ducktown at all, and perhaps never did. The Graded School netted from Butt's exhibitions of paintings the sum of $60 which will be ex pended for appliances and fixtures for the school rooms. Mr. John W. Smith, Assistant Postmaster at Fremont, was ar rested Wednesday morning and brought to Wilson for trial before U. S. Commis sioner J. W. Lancaster, on a charge of opening a letter before it was delivered to the owner. ' We favor and heartily endorse Mr. Dortch's bill, but cannot subscribe freely to the position taken by so many of our contemporaries. We were shown in Rocky Mount a very valuable and much needed invention, which has recently been patented by two in ventive citizens of Nash count v. Messrs. J. R. Underwood and Geo. W. Daniel, in the shape of a pinion lifter or a device for gear ing mills and other machinery -known as the "Utility Pinion Lifter." Mr. Geo. Bennett, who lives near Mr. J. D. Jenkins' in Edgecombe county, met. with a sudden and tragical death last Friday. He was by occupation a shingle getter and on that par ticular morning as he went to his work he espied a very fat o'possum in a tree and commenced with his axe to cut it down so as to catch the o'possum while in the act of cutting, a limb fell on his head inflict ing a serious wound, from which he died in a few minutes. Charlotte Observer: The last issue of the Farmer and Mechanic contains a lengthy article, by Mr. Shotwell, in reply to the charge made by Gov. Jarvis, in his speech on the Agricultural Department, that the farmer and Mechanic was influenced in its hostility to that Department by the fact that it had been refused the printing. This charge Mr. Shotwell pronounces unquali fiedly false. He gives a history of the course of that paper previous to and after it came under his management, and asserts that he never directly or indirectly sought the printing, although, under a contract en tered into between the Department and the company from whom he leased the office, he was entitled to the printing, if he saw fit to demand it. But he did not demand it, and was not in a condition to do the work if it had been given to him. This article places the Governor on the defensive. Mr. Wm. Griffith, deputy to Sheriff Alex ander, yesterday entered suit against the Atlantic & Charlotte Air Line Railroad, for $20,000 damages for the killing of his son Robert, near Atlanta, eighteen months ago. A remarkably rich vein of ore has been struck in the Gold Valley mine, of Rowan county. A specimen of the ore. .exhibited at the Boyden House in Salisbury yester day would assay $1,000 to the bushel, or $10,000 to the ton, and this is considered a low estimate. The ore is slate and is filled with free gold. For a couple of months past, the white children returning to their homes from the graded school, have been subjected to gross indignities at the hands of a party of colored boys who it seems nSeirwti'w dren on their wav home from school and abuse and maltreat them. These attacks have teen made on the little white girls. Yesterday evening, however, a party of school children were attacked, by these col ored boys in a manner more outrageous and unbearable than ever, and brought on a conflict between the colored gang and the white boys of the graded school, who were following the girls some distance behind and were not seen by the colored rowdies until they had begun their attack on the girls. The white boys came to the rescue and had a right sharp little -fight with the rowdies, finally putting them all to flight. T ZEEL" ZED CITY. inkw advertisements. Due Notice. A. David Not "Venn or. They will be in the "future London" about the same time with Mrs. Frank Leslie and her corps of artists and the Duke de Morney. The artists will have fine subjects for their pencils. Waahlneton's Birthday. Thursday next is Washington's birth day. Can't we get up some enthusi asm on the subject ? We know a gentle man on the wharf who would gladly mount the rostrum and expatiate on the early vir tues of the father of his country. Since writing the above we learn from Capt. Cantwell that the Wilmington Light Infantry will parade on the 22nd instant, which is Washington's birthday. For this purpose the Company will meet at the armory at 4 o'clock. The parade will be confined to Market, Princess and Chcsnut. and Front, Second and Third streets. We a large turn out on the occa- sion. it is a good arrangement iu one sense: The birthday gifts for both can be presented at the same time. Thieves Break Into a Store. The store of Mr. C. H. Wessell, on North Water street, near the foot of Mulberry, was entered Friday night and robbed. The thief or thieves effected an entrance by removing brick from a corner in the rear of the store and making a hole about three feet in length and two feet in depth, using a spade and probably a crow-bar in removing the mor tar and dislodging the brick. Mr. Wessell says he lost four gallon, three half-gallon and one three-gallon demijohns, and that the thieves filled them all with fine liquors. They also took a quantity of tobacco, about fifty cents in currency (all there was in the drawer), several articles of clothing, such as coats and pants, and a lot of shoes. They doubtless took other articles, but those mentioned were all that Mr. C, missed. No clue. Church Council. Yesterday a beautiful parlor set of fur niture and other articles were presented to Rev. F. W. E. Peschau, pastor of St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church, by the mem- j bers, the occasion being his 34th birthday. In this connection we are prepared to state a remarkable fact, and that is that the rev erend gentleman and his good wife are ex actly the same age (though not twin's), both being born on the 17th day of February, 1849. We doubt if a similar coincidence cau be found in all the annals of Hymen. Prof. WlUoushby Reade.
