A regakr meeting of the Board of Audit and Finance was held Monday even ing last Present, Mr. R. J. Jones, Chair man, and Messrs. Wm. Calder, W. R. Kenan and J no. S. McEachern. The salary of the City Attorney was In creased to $500 per annum; to, take effect from the date of election of the present in cumbent .The recommendation of the Board of Aldermen that the building now used as a J market bouse, corner of Fifth and Castle streets, be rented by the city at $75 per an num, -and that the building be put in proper condition for use the stall to be rented as provided in the market ordinance was approved. ; The petition of the Hibernian ' Associa tion to' be relic veil of the payment of city tax for 1882, on the property recently pur- chased by the Association on Third street, opposite the City Hall was granted. The bond of John W. Perdew, as stand ard keeper, in the Bum of $200, with Messrs. W. M. Poisson, JI. Vollers and W. M. Parker as sureties, was approved and accepted. The bond of John H. Pugb, as clerk of the market and cattle weigher, iu the sum of $200, with T. P. Sikes. as surety, was presented, when it was declared to be the sense of the Board that there should be two sureties. The bill of Richard B. Clowe, for fur nishing 102 street signs, amounting to $55.32, was referred to the committee on Streets and Wharves of the Board of Al dermen, for approval. The bill of R II. Grant & Co., amount-' log to $60.25, for plumbing for the Fourth Street market house, was referred to the cam mi t tee on Markets and Fees of the Board of Aldermen, for approval. Mr. Kenan moved that the recent action of the Board in the matter of opening Cbesnut street dock be reconsidered. The motion was adopted; Mr. Calder, of the Board, only voting in the negative. Mr. Jones then moved that the matter be referred back to the Board of Aldermen, with the request that esttmates be furnish ed of the cost of demolishing the present wharf, drawing the piling, cleaning out the dock, building necessary walls on three sides of the dock, and building an engine-way on one side with slide for load ing engines oo flats, similar to the one now at said whart fjhia being, necessary i. case of fire on the opposite side of the river, and this wharf being the only one owned by the city. The motion was adopted. ' Alderman Boney, chairman of the com mittee on Fire Department from the Board of Aldermen, appeared before the Board and presented a communication from Cnpt J. L. Boatwright, chairman of a committee of the Wilmington Steam Fire Engine Co. No. 1, addressed to Alderman Boney and making the following suggestions, viz: That a new set of harness be purchased for! the company; that a horse be purchased, also, for the company's hose reel; that the horse be fed by the city. Inasmuch as the recommendations of Capt BoatwrighJ hsd not received the ap proval of the committee on Fire Depart ment of the Board of Aldermen, and as the appropriation for the Fire Department as it now stands was approved by the Board of Audit and Finance upon the recom mendation of the Board of Aldermen, it was suggested to Alderman Boney by Mr. Jones, tbat it would be proper before any alteration is made in the appropriation, tbat the request should emanate from the Board of Aldermen, and that therefore the matter should be laid before that Board for its action. Barrels or Naval Store and Other: , Property. - i During the storm, wfrich swept over this! city yesterday evening about o.Sclock,; a flash of lightning set fire to a warehouse' on the naval store yard of " Messrs. Woody &Currie, on South Water street, between Orange and Ann. The warehouse, a frame; structure, contained about 200 barrels of spirits turpentine, and with its contents, was soon blazing fiercely. Dense volumes; of smoke rose up and gave the first intelli-j gence of the fierce conflagration that Was! raging. The fire bells rang out, and; soon, despite the storm", the streets In! the vicinity were thronged Jrith hundreds of people. The fire spread with great rapidity to. the warehouses) yards" and wharves adjoining; owing to the eombus-i tible'nature of their contents ;'but by hard, work the Fire Department succeeded in staying the further Bpread of the fire, and in less than an hour had it fully under con-: trol. A warehouse and wharf belonging to Messrs. G. W. Williams & Co., containing molasses. Insured.' A warehouse belonging to Fowler & Morrison, containing molasses. Insured. Besides the above, some fifty cords of wood, the property of Messrs. Fowler & Morrison, were consumed ; uninsured. The firemen had hard work in saving the warehouses and wharf of Messrs. Shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday after noon dark and portentous looking clouds suddenly rolled up from the northwest and swept over the city. A strong breeze sprang up at the same time, and the dust for awhile was blinding. There was hur rying and scurring to and fro by pedes trians, and the sidewalks of the city, pre sented an animated scene, in strong con trast to their dull and vacant appearance a few hours before, when the sun was shin ing its fiercest. There was a strong electri cal display at the same time. It was pro bably only the southern edge of the storm that' touched us.
