Information wa received by s prominent
business firm of this city, a few days ago,
to the effect that a man named John D.
Lynch bad trifled with the affections of a
yon ng girl at Sumter, S. C, and had final
ly abducted her from the home of her
parent and thai the couple were known to
have come in Ihl direction. Upon appli
cation a warrant was issued by Mayor Hall,
acting ia the capacity of a justice of the
peace, aad placed in Ihe hand of a judi
cious and expert officer, who took with him
an amstant and started out on the track of
the man aad his misguided victim.
They finally traced them Into the mkLt of
the Green Swamp, about eleven miles from
Brink ley Ststion. In Brunswick county.
Io the meantime the officer had his paper
endorsed by Justice Forme, at Cronly; In
that county, and. having procured a wagon
from a Mr. Applewhite who showed a
willingness to afford them all the facilities
poasibie. they proceeded to explore the in
tricate rrccvies of the swamp in question
and finally came upon the couple occupy
ing a room In a certain house. They were
taken into custody and brought to this city,
when ths man Lynch was lodged in Jail
and the girl was taken care of.
It U said that Lynch ha a wife and two
children In HumUr. The girl is about 18
years of aire.
Since writing the above we Icaro that an
officer was to leave for Sumter with the
young girl yesterday evening. Lynch
(very significant name under the circum
stances) will remain In Jail here nntil Tues
day, when the sheriff of ihe county is ex
pected to arrive here with the proper pa
pers and take him to Sumter.

One Archie Slmms, colored, was arrested
by Officer Joe Whitney, yesterday, charged
with atcaling a copper still from Mr. A. II.
Paddlson. The arrest was made on a war
rant issued by Justice Gardner in Septem
ber, 1881, and the defendant has succeeded
ia eludlDg the officers ever since. It seems
that he got into a fight with a woman on
Friday, and a warrant was issued for his
arrest for assault and battery. Io serving
tie wtmat Officer Whitney thought he re
cognized in hi capture the man who had
successfully avoided arrest for a more seri
ous crime, and subsequent, investigation
proved the correctness of hi snrmlses.
When the assault and battery case is finally
disposed of he will be fcsM for preliminary
cxamlssiion oa the charge of larceny.

Shortly after 12 o'clock, last night, a fire
broke but in tho atom room of Mt. John
II. Strauss, dealer la groceries, northeast
corner of Chesnat and Water street, and
a lusty alarm soon brought the engines and
fire men to the scene. Several streams of.
water were soon poured into the store room.
and although the flames had made conside
rable progress they were soon extinguished.
There Is much valuable property in the im
mediate v lei ally, aad It was feared at one.
Usnei that there would be an .ex
tensive conflagration, .but the prompt
work of the firemen kept the flames
closely confined. We could not learn the
extEStofthe damage, bat the stock was
almost entirely destroyed either by fire or.
water. The origin of the fire is
not : octet mined, but l supposed
to have originated, from the bursting

score room. The building Is the property
of Mr. John L Holmes, and the damage
