v . - Special 8 tar Beport. ' " '
The Pynbd of North Carolina, conyened
according to adjournment la the First
Presbyterian Church of thia city last eve
ning, at 7-80 o'clock. A large congrega
tion assembled and waited oa the opening
exercise with evident enjoyment t Betides
the pastors of , the two Presbyterian
Churcbea la thia city Key. Dr. Wilson
aad Rev. Mr. Payne the pulpit waa occu
pied by the Bev. L. C Vase, of New
Berne, and- Bev. H. G. Hill, of Fayette-
VfllOL
The opening sermon waa preached by
the but Moderator present, Rev. Dr. Hill,
the text being' from Jonah, lii:2: "Arise;
go to Nineveh, that great city, and prtfcch
to It the preaching that I bid thee."
After an introduction showing how God
by rebuke compels Hia servants to do the
work He assigns illustrated by' Lot. and
David, and Elijah and Jonah he then an
nounced bla theme as suggested by the
text. (1) the character of the minister; (2) the
message of the minister, and (3) the mis
sion of the minister.
L And under the first trnth,he proclaimed
vigorously that the minister does not preach
for a livelihood competent maintenance ia
merely an "adjanct of office. Nor ia the
preacher the hired servant of a particular
congregation; "hiring a preacher by the
year." Bach views involve ownership In
part, and the direction of the minister's
preaching- as a housekeeper would con
trol and guide a cook. Hence, the demand
for 'twenjty minute" discourses.
What ia Lis proper cn'aiacter ? The met
aenger of Jehovah. God gives the com
mission and tho audience; He givea the
message and the field of labor. Again, the
messenger of Jehovah ia sustained by di
vine power. Jonah not only spoke by di
vine authority, but under the protection of
divine power as an ambassador of a coun
tiy la apbeld by the honor and might of bis
nation. Moaea and Elijah are illustrations.
God'a power not only protects, but nerves
aad encourages the minister. As God's mes
senger, the minister' la entitled 10 the con
fidence and support of God'a people.
U. The preacher'a message: This is
divinely prescribed. The messenger's
themes are divinely appointed. Thia cuts
oat sll purely secular subjects so often
chosen tuch as politics, literature, science,
&c the Church's dicta. Again: Only
parts of divine truth are proclaimed; the
justice of God ia hidden. Calvary is pro
claimed, but Sinai is not made known. The
"hard doctnnea" are not to be preached,
according to such theorists. The preacher's
message moat bo drawn from the Scriptures
or directed by them; such themes as are
moat copious aad charming.
IIL The preacher's mission : He is sent
to bring men to consideration. The same
peril now threatens tbo world as over
whelmed the Nlnevitea. To think, to con
sider, to know this is tbe need of the
times. The great business of a minister is
to make people think. Jonah was sent to
nrge Nineveh to faith, repentance and new
obedience. Thia It the 'minister's mission.
But his great mission it to save souls.
Dr. Hill closed with ah earnest and ten
der appeal to the brethren of the Synod to
remember the scriptural conception of the
gospel mission.
Dr. Hill spoke from written notes with
his usual animation and with evident ap
preciation of the wetghtiness of hia theme.
After the sermon the Synod was consti
tuted with prayer.

The Charlotte Observer says: "Quite a
J. good audience, assembled at the Lutheran
chuich last night to hear the lecture of
Rev. F. W. E. Peschau on the 'Cemetery
of the Sea. ' The very name of the lecture
implies that it is an interesting one in it
self, but its eloquent and graceful delivery
by the speaker makes it doubly so. Mr.
Peschau is a lecturer of fine ability, and
the 'Cemetery of the Sea' is,one of the
finest literary productions we have known
to emanate from the pen of our home
talent." . ' :

THE FLORENCE : NIGHTINGALE OF -THE
NURSERY. The following is an extract from a
letter written to the German Reformed Messenger,
at Chambersburgh; Penn. : A BekHfactbess. Just
open the door for her, .and Mrs. Winslow will
prove the American Florence Nightingale of the.
Nursery. Of this we are so sure, that we will
teach our "Susy'1 to say, A blessing on Mrs.
Winslow" for helping her to survive ana escape
the griping, colioking, and teething siege. Mas.
Winslow's Soothemo Steup relieves the child
from pain, andjeures dysentery and diarrhoea. It
softens the gums,reduces inflanwnatlon,onreswmd
colic, and carries the infant safely through the
teething period. It . performs precisely what it
professes to perform, . every part of it nothing
less. - We have never seen Mrs. Winslow know
her only through the preparation of her "Soothing
Syrup for Children Teething." If we had the
power we would make her, as she Is, a physical
saviour to the Infant race. Sold by all druggists.
