SUICIDE, Te Captain of a German Barque iimpi Orerbearst Drtwni IUm , Self Keeorery or the Body Inqueat, Ottr Usually quiet community was some what startled from its equanimity yester day morning by the, announcement of the roldda of CLsWflheIm: Kntrth, of the German barque' Smite, which arrived here froni Liverpool on Tuesday, tho X8th inst. It was sUted thai 'ho had Jumped over boaryJ, frowned himself, but it was tho tvcTatnmust be some mistake about it Juhl operation of dragging com ment3fTtnen th body waa s.oon pecoy ered, aqd around the neck of the drowned Jati'waa a largo anchor chain, between six and seven feet long, with a large piece of lro& attached, weighing' forty or fifty pounds. Qoroner Jacobs, having been notified, summoned the following jury: Y. Ilorrell, Joh,n,n. Thccs, Martin Young, T. ,tL Beyta, Tf. J,- Cutlar and Elijah Lane. The. witnesses were C. Knochenhauer, mate, and F. Voltz, A- Goldman n and H. Nordmann, of the crew. They testified that the last they saw of Cupt. ivnu,th wag Wednesday nlglt, abo.ut o'clock, when ho was oq board the vessel, walking up and down the deck. Qne witne?s, H. Nord mann, said that after the rest of the men had gono ashore; tho captain came out of the cabin three different times, went for ward and called him, and asked him if he had seen a certain hook some of the meq had dropped overboard, lo which witness rephed that ho had not, when the caotqin went back aft, each tim. seemingly satis fiodf. About a half hour after the last visit of the cAptaln on this errand wivnc? heard a splash, aa of something ! falling overboard. Ad 8600 as the other men came on board he told them there was something wrong with the cap tain, and after a short time spent in con versation on the subject of their com mander's actions they retired. Yesterday morning the steward went into the cap tain' room and be was not there. The steward called the male aod informed that oHJcer that Capt. Knuth was mlssing.when a search was Instituted for him all through tho vessel, but without avail. They found, however, the following words in German, written with chalk on the table and which subsequently were translated-, "The world la only a swindle and hum bug, dear wife and child. I havd been as far as I believe one of the most honest. Your sorrow about me, I know, will soon make you follow me, and all the world is poverty. Your William." Then the men became convinced that the captain had drowned himself, and they proceeded forthwith to rig a hook to drag for the body. They commenced the search as; near as possible where the splash was hoard by Nordmann, and about 11 o'clock the body waa brought to the surface, in the condition already described. The verdict of the lury was that deceased came to his death by his own band. Deceased was about 85 or 40 years of age, add leaves a wife and one child at their far off home in Swincmunde, Germany, to mourn their great loss. The remains were taken in charge by the German Imperial Consul, Mr. E. Peschau, and, under his direction, interred in Bellcvue Cemetery yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. On the person of the drowned man was found a watch and chain, with a locket at tached, containing a photograph of his wife. It ia stated that deceased received a letter on Sunday saying that his father-in-Jaw was dead, and that he has boen showing signs of depression ever since. He is said to have been a man of good habits, and his men were all very fond of him. A Ceanparlson. From an old publication, entitled "Trea sures of Knowledge," printed in 1831, a friend of ours gleans the following- facts and statistics, which he handed to us, and we make some comparisons which may be of Interest: For tho fiscal year of 1830-31 the arri vals of vessels at all the ports in North Carolina numbered 235. During 1882 the arrivals at this port alone, of' vessels over 00 tons burthen, aod nearly all over 100 tons, numbered 481 fc added to which there were a large number of small coasting schooners, steamers, &c The entered tonnage in 1830-'31 aggre gated 27.757 tons for the whole State, while tho tonnage of vessels clearing for ports outside of the State footed up 36,592. In 1383 tho tonnage of arrivals at this port alone aggregated 201,268, of which 130,979 were American and 70,287 foreign. The value of imports at all ports of the State in. the year named was $195,356. For the fis cal year ended Juno 30th, 1883, the value of imports at this port alone footed up $229,053.12, and it was not a good year for imports either. ' The value of exports for 1830 31 for the entire State is act down as follows: Do mestic fcroductt $340,973; foreign products $167. The total value of foreign exports from this port alone for 1882 was $4,711, 923. navef Coaira. Opera-House. 1n Paradise," which was played last night by John T. Raymond, at the Opera House, was received by a fair audience with! much applause. There are many good points in this comedy-drama, one of its chief recommendations being its originali ty, i The fitrietures on the slang ex pressions which" are becoming so prevalent were particularly good. The play abounded in wit and humor, and produced uproarious laughter. Mr. Raymond was the centre of attraction, and gave universal satisfaction. Mr. John Noble, in, the cha racter of Bart BinkSj made several good hits, and yaa. ono Qf the principal enjoy ments of the performance. Laet Sermon Before Conference. On Sunday next Rev. Frank H. Two horses attached to a truck started at the Front street depot yesterday and ran down Front to a point opposite the Purceil House. Two drivers of delivery wagons noticed the team coming "full tilt," and ran cu,t and seized the reins, while simul taneous with this bold action Sergeant Da vis and Officer Bryan, of the police force, confronted the excited animals, when, af ter a little rearing and plunging, they stop ped and became submissive. Within a few feet of where they were halted a delivery wagon was backed, tip in front of Capt. Boatwright's store, and if the horses had not been stooped just" where they were, there would have been a collision, and the long shaft of the truck would most likely have been plunged into the horse's side with such" force as to have caused his death. The runaway horses came very near running into a buggy occupied by Dr. Storm. The team belonged at the livery stable of Mr. J. H. Jones, and was not damaged Ladles' Benevolent Society. At the annual meeting of the Ladies' Benevolent Society, held yesterday, the following officers were elected for the en suing year: . President Mrs. C G. Kennedy. 'Vice President Mrs. A. A. Willard. WINSLO W f Aa this question is frequently asked, we will simply say that she is a lady who for upwards of thirty years has unti ringly devoted her time and talents as a female Physician and nurse, principally among children. She has especially studied the constitution and wants of this numerous class, and, as a result pf this effort, and practical knowledge, obtained in a lifetime spent as a nurse and physician, she has compounded a Soothing Syrup for children teeth ing. It operates like magio giving rest and health, and is, moreover, sure to regulate the bowels. In consequence of this article Mrs. Wins low is becoming world-renowned as a benefactor of her race; children certainly do Bis itjp and bless her- especially ta this the case In this city. Vast quantities of the Soothing Syrupare daily sold and used here.
