He complained shortly be fore his death that his breast was full of pain, and that it extended to the ends of his fingers. Deceased was perhsps about as well known as any man in the county, and his sudden death has caused a great shock. Before the war be was wealthy, but lost heavily by the result of the struggle for Southern independence. In some instances crockery and glassware were made to rattle by the force of the shock, which was not confined to any particular part of the city. Some persons say me l shock was accompanied by a rumbling sound, and one or two declare that they felt two or three distinct shocks. The main shock hasted from eight to ten seconds. Confirmatory of the reality of the shock we have a report, through the 8ignal office here, frem the Signal Service observer at Fort Macon, in this State, to the effect that a shock of an earthquake was felt at Bean - fort, N.
