Curry, who knew Mr. Yancey well, and who is himself one of the most eloquent men in the United States, From a boy Dr. Hawthorne has been a passionate student of oratory, and his ad- I dress gave evidence ot His extensive read- ing, loving interest and -judicious opinions on the subject. . Dr. Hawthorne has been honored by spe cial attentions from many of our citizens and expresses himself as greatly pleased with his visit to Wilmington. We fear, however, that he will go away with rather a low opinion bf the literary tastes' of our people, judging from the size of the audi ences that listened to his admirable lec tures. A German by the name of Charles Kunpld, employed on the ' revenue cutter Colfax, met with an accident while the an chor was being weighed yesterday morning, by which two of his ribs wero broken. Waters; Katie Comfort, Queen street; one package for Eliza Grant. RIVER AND MARINE. - Steamboatmen - report quite a freshet in the river, there being at least thirty-five feet of water on the shoals. The lowlands are submerged in some places, and a great many sheep and hogs were noticed on knolls, where they were completely sur rounded by water. So far there has been no damage from the freshet.
