Our Informant states that there is perhaps
not a man in the county who realizes the
magnitude that the business of grape cul
ture Is assuming at this vineyard. Only
three yean ago Capt. Nobles had three hun
dred vines. Now he has already twenty
thousand vines set, comprising one hun
dred and fifty different varieties, and put
out during the winter just past fully one
hundred thousand cuttings; while he ex-'
peels to plant at least twenty thousand
vines the coming winter.
The proprietor of this extensive vineyard
claims that this section, owing to the great
length of the season, and the adaptability
of the soil, is superior to any other locality
for the propagation of nurseries. Our in
formant was shown a plot of ground, now
reset in plum grafts, from which was ta
ken and sold last winter seven thousand
plum grafts that had in one year grown to
the length of six to eight feet. The grafts
of apples, peaches and Dears do equally as
well. Mr. McKoy saw grafts in full bloom
and in fruit In fact, even buds that were
inserted last August were in full bloom. '
KxTseeteel Firemen's Visit.
It is now definitely understood that the
Wilmington & F. E. Company, with their
horses and engine, the "Little Giant," will
accept the invitation to go to New Berne
and be the guests of the Atlantic Steam
Fire Engine Co. No. 1, of that city. It is
proposed to make the visit about the mid
dle of June, with as many as forty men,
accompanied by the Cornet Concert Club
to furnish the music,, and a big time is ex
pected. I The engine will be thoroughly
overhauled in the xneantime, and new tubes
put in the place of the old ones, which are
said to leak badly, having lasted about
nine years, whereas they are not usually
expected to hold out longer than five
yean. Under these circumstances the
company claims it is possible to keep up
only about forty pounds of steam, when
one hundred pounds would not be exces
sive. We are sure that our Wilmington
boys will not be disappointed in their anti
cipation of a good time. New Berne has
always been proverbial for her hospitality,
and long before the great railroad celebra
tion in 1857, when every house in town
was open to accommodate the thousands of
visitors, it wss known that a New Bernian's
pleasant duty and one that he prized
above all others was to welcome and en
tertain in princely style sod with unaffected
cordiality those invited as guests to his
beautiful "city of the elms."

The Duty on Kiee A Misapprehension
Corrected.
Messrs. Norwood Giles& Co., of this"
city, .have received a letter from Hon.
Wharton J. Green, date4 Washington,
April 16th, relative to some misconstrue-
I OT misapprehension, on the part of a
number, of persons m this section in regard
to the duty on rice. ""CoL Green sends a'
copy of the original Morrison bill, and also
a copy as reported from the committee on
Ways and Means, and calls attention to the
fact that the objectionable clause alluded
to, which appears in the original bill, is
entirely left out in the reported one. Salt,
coal and timber are the only articles put
on the free list. Consequently, says he,
rice stands precisely on the same footing
with the gTeat bulk of other articles sub
ject to duty tax, which is 20 per cent., if
the bill becomes a law. This he thinks ,
hardly probable during the present session,
as it would stand but little chance before
the Republican Senate, even if it succeeds
in the House.
The Quintette Club.
The Mendelssohn Quintette Club will
give a performance here Monday night for
the benefit of the Wilmington Library As
sociation, and they deserve a good house.
We copy the following from the Chicago
Tribune:
"The cosy and elegant little Fairbank
Hall in the Central Music Hall Building
was formally dedicated to music last even
ing by the Mendelssohn Quintette Club of
Boston. It was in keeping with the na
ture of the occasion that the hall should
have been dedicated by an organization so
perfect as the Mendelssohn Club. The
members received a hearty greeting as they
made their appearance, and this greeting
was enthusiastically emphasized during the
evening."
Obstreperous.
A colored woman was cutting up some
ugly capers on the streets yesterday after
noon, evidently under the influence of a
superabundance of "benzine," and when
Officer Terry attempted to arrest her she
resisted to the extent of her ability. He
finally succeeded in getting her to the
guard house, however, but she was too
much overcome by potions and emotions
to give her' name, which will be lost to the
anxious reader until she reveals it before
the Court.
Personal.
Mr. H.'B. Short, Jr., who has been at
tending the meeting of . the Democratic
Executive Committee at Raleigh,' gave us a
call yesterday. .
Capt E. J. Hale, of the Fayetteville 0b,
terver, accompanied . by Mrs. Hale,, is here
on a short visit.
