They were rather below the ordinary size, and certainly brought a good price. More than one-third of the counties of the Slate have already made appropriations for a special exhibit at the State Exposition, and in many others considerable sums have been raised by private contributions. It seems that he claimed that one Henry Taylor owed him $5, and on the strength of that he went to a party whom be knew . was indebted to Taylor in the sum of $5 and told him that Taylor sent him to collect It Suspecting nothing wrong the gentleman paid the amount over to Johnson, and Taylor subse quently had him arrested. Johnson denied that he collected the money, until the gen tleman who paid it to him was put upon the stand and testified, when he had no more to say. The procession of babies took place yes terday afternoon, and it was certainly the most perfect realization of "linked sweet ness long drawn out" that we have ever seen. The little cherubs in their gayly dressed carriages, propelled by nurses habited in neat and becoming apparel, pre sented a picture worth walking a long dis tance to see. They attracted much atten tion all along the line of march, and it was amusing to see old and staid fathers and grandfathers frisking around and inquir ing eagerly what direction the procession had taken. Kepllcaa Delesrate to Chicago- A telegram received at the Stab office yesterday afternoon, announced that the Republican District Convention at Laurin burg had elected Ron. W. P. Bynum, of Charlotte, and Capt E. J. Pen Dy packer, of this city, as delegates to the National Convention at Chicago. The alternates are W. W. Jenkins, of Charlotte, and John W. Spaulding, col ored, of Columbus. Some of O. L. Mabson's friends received a telegram from him to the effect that the delegates to Chicago wero lion. O. II. Dockery and himself. Davis & Son had on ex hibition yesterday, st the fish market, a monster specimen of the finny tribe known as the king of the shad, or "Tarpin." He weighed one hundred and seventy pounds. Several of these fish have been caught in our waters, but this is the largest ever taken. lie will be on exhibition for a day or two, and the ladies are requested to call and take a look at him. Brunswick county, about fourteen miles from this city, was destroyed by fire on Monday night, about 10 o'clock.
